KEY GAMES THIS WEEK

Nacogdoches vs #2 (5A)  Lufkin . . . Nac's Brandon Jones (UT recruit) is out for the year or this game would be even more interesting than it already is.

Whitehouse vs #7 (5A) John Tyler . . . It's athleticism/running game vs automated pilot offense. Should be a shoot out

Refugio #1 (2A) vs Cameron Yoe . . . Two big time programs go at it in an unusual pre-district meeting.

Argyle vs Paris . . . Up and coming Paris could derail Argyle

Stratford vs Amarillo Bushland . . . Can Bushland surprise the Elks?

Kennedale #5 (4A) vs Dallas Carter . . . Carter always has a shot

Cibolo Steele #7 (6A) vs Smithson Valley . . . Two traditional powers go at it

Allen #1 (6A) vs Flower Mound Marcus . . . Marcus is improving, but seriously, it's Allen.

Big Spring (4-0) vs Graham (3-1)

Notice that in Class 5A's state rankings, Ennis is listed in the "others receiving votes" list - with a first place vote as well.

Very unusual. Would like to know where the first place vote came from.

Nicely done Mark.

Here's the Camas HS preview from the Columbian newspaper today. GSHL 4A District opener for both teams.

EVERGREEN (2-1, 1-0) vs. CAMAS (3-0, 0-0)

When, where: 7 p.m., Doc Harris Stadium, Camas

Last week: Evergreen beat Heritage 47-31; Camas beat Rogers-Puyallup 68-0

About Evergreen: The Plainsmen’s big-play capability returned last week after going on hiatus the previous week against Todd Beamer. Billy Nelson scored two TDs on kickoff returns, one on a fumble return and one on a 31-yard run. But you don’t beat Camas with big plays. You need to possess the ball and steadily move the chains. Evergreen threw two interceptions and allowed 141 yards to Heritage’s Kalani Umiamaka.

About Camas: The Papermakers seem to be getting better and better. Since allowing a late TD in Week 1 against Chiawana, Camas outscored its opponents 117-6. QB Liam Fitzgerald was very efficient last week, completing 15 of 19 passes for 254 yards and four TDs. His 682 passing yards rank second in the county. WR James Price leads the county with 19 catches and 306 yards.

Prep Proletariat says: Let’s play connect the scores again: Camas beat Rogers 68-0, Rogers beat Todd Beamer 28-21, Todd Beamer beat Evergreen 33-0. Sorry, Plainsmen.

Prediction: Camas 48-6

Score Czar: Camas 34-3

A game of interest to Horns on this evening

Mesquite Poteet vs. Rockwall-Heath

Rockwall’s Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium, 7 p.m. Thursday

Poteet (2-1) and Heath (2-1) open 12-5A play with one of the district’s biggest games. And Deshon Elliott, a Texas pledge, should play a major factor at all times. The 6-1, 210-pound safety plays on both sides of the ball for Heath – also getting snaps at wide receiver. “He’s really been a great help for us on the offensive side of the ball,†Heath coach Mickey Moss said. “The more I watch him on offense, the more I think he could be Division I receiver – if they’d decide to use him that way. Just the plays that he makes, he’s been impressive.†Moss said that Elliott’s last game – a 21-14 win over Garland – might have been his most complete of the season. Elliott had a critical fourth-quarter interception that he returned for a 50-yard touchdown, and also caught a pass. He has five catches on the year for 80 yards and two scores.

Texas' high priority recruiting target, Malik Jefferson, will also be playing in this game for Poteet. The 6'3, 215 lb 5-star LB will have plenty of chances to get acquainted with Elliott this evening.

Here's another entry of interest. McKinney Boyd's Dedrick Scrivens is a back I wish Texas had pursued. He's a verbal to Okie State right now. I've seen him in person twice last year and was thoroughly impressed. Kid has great speed, nice lateral movement for a speed burner, too. Every time he touched the ball the crowd would stand in anticipation.

Plano West vs. McKinney BoydMcKinney’s Ron Poe Stadium

While both teams will be jockeying for position in 6-6A, this game won’t have as much significance as it might seem. West (3-0) is the state’s second-largest school, guaranteed to be in the Division I playoffs if it qualifies. Boyd (2-2) is the district’s smallest, destined for Division II. But RBs Soso Jamabo (West) and Dedrick Scrivens (Boyd) will make this fun.

Fantastic info, Mark! Thanks for all the work!

I'm surprised to see Aledo ranked #1 in 5A with a 2-1 record. What's the deal there?

Believe it or not, they dropped one at home to Bishop Amat (LaPuenta, California) by a lopsided 42-7 score.

Bishop Amat 2-2 is ranked #80 in the nation. So a lot of that #1 ranking is benefit of the doubt given as a result from previous years.

From Dallas Morning News, Looks like the Swag Copter made it in for tonight Poteet game against Heath. Sumlin was there to impress Malik Jefferson, who was injured tonight. USC was also there recruiting Jefferson.

NS_25poteetheath5AJ_39959911_69459.JPG

Poteet beats Rockwall Heath, 25-14.

Malik Jefferson was injured and removed from the game with a concussion in the 2nd quarter. He was on the sidelines in the second half with his arm in a sling and a towel draped over his head.

His coach described him as "pretty banged up."

Deandre McNeal, a Texas target, had a banner night for Heath. He caught 4 passes for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns on offense and racked up three sacks on defense.

Deshon Elliott, another Texas target, was limited to 1 reception for 14 yards.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me to see McNeal turn out to be better than Jefferson. It wouldn't be in their first two years, but in the last 2, he has a shot - ridiculous upside with him.

Thanks for the efforts, Mark. Great post.

I'm looking forward to watching St. John Bosco (CA) vs Bishop Gorman (NV) on ESPN 8pm tonight.

Josh Rosen is the top QB recruit in country committed to UCLA.  Looking forward to watching him play.

IMO, the concussion is a big deal. You only get so many of those before you have to hang em up (see David Ash). Jefferson's got at least one now before he arrives on the college level. For a player whose job is to hit people on every play, I'm worried about it.
