HOW does this mess get cleaned up now?

Apparently Saban/Sexton gave UT the middle finger last night with the extension announcement on ESPN during the banquet. That's after several days of ESPN coverage of Mack's imminent departure, followed by his "fighting" to keep his job. Not to mention the BOR meeting where Powers received a vote of confidence, rumored that the timing was to appease BMD's that he would handle Mack's "retirement" quickly.

So- now Mack has exercised his power to control the message, and effectively raise his middle finger to the new guard BMD's, UT fan websites and those fans or admin not loyal to him. And Powers and Patterson stand by to watch the show and offer accolades at a tense, awkward banquet last night. Was painful watching on LHN, where it looked like no one (with the exception of Patterson's cheesy grin) wanted to be there.

Short of a Mack resignation, what happens next?

Unless I'm missing something, Powers has neutered Patterson re: Mack, who (if he stays) will have enflamed a huge fanbase against him....and somehow galvanized those who've allowed this charade to continue.

With tempers flaring, WHO steps forward to take charge of this political and PR mess? And more important, who's REALLY in control with the ADept moving forward? I'll hang up and listen.

Money Talks and I think the BMD's are gonna start screaming. Read somewhere that the first vote was 5-4 to oust Powers and when Powers said he would push to get Mack to retire the 2nd vote came back 6-3 to retain. This clown show still has a chapter or two left to play out it seems.

There were always three things in play here with regard to football--

(1) Getting Dodds out;

(2) Getting Brown out; and

(3) Getting someone new in

The first part is done.

The second part unfortunately became tightly entangled with the third part.

However, since that entanglement has now been undone, (2) may yet still happen.

If so, then its on to (3) in quick order (as time is wasting).

So, from my perspective, all is not lost.

In hindsight, waiting until the dead period to make a formal announcement makes some sense. It also allowed the seniors to enjoy their banquet without it all being about Mack Brown.

I was never a fan of the idea its Saban or bust. The way it all went down was messy and embarrassing, this cannot be denied. I don't like it, but its over. Time to move on. At the same time, there are still many very interesting names out there -- including but not limited to Urban Meyer, Gus Malzahn, James Franklin, John Harbaugh (it appears both David Shaw and Jim Harbaugh are out). If we end up with one of the listed names by New Years, I will still consider it a win for us.

Unless Oregon is completely uniterested the should beat us badly and if so perhaps that will be the final nail in his coffin.

If true, there actually would be more available good coaches at the beginning of the new yr as the NFL reg season would be over and several interesting candidates may be available and with the bowl season coming to an end, more college candidates as well.

It's true the scenario would hurt us this yr in recruiting but in the long run it could well work out.

It also makes it imperative that we get a really good coach and preferably a splash type hire

That would be hard to swallow, and has the potential to gut recruiting. If it does go that way, its a major fail by Steve Patterson.

Still we would have no choice but to do it. Mack cannot stay. This staying through 2014 for 9 more wins idea sounds both petty and crazy. Our home games would get ugly. I have always hated home crowd booing of our own team. It grates.

Patterson must have enough sense to see this.
