Principal: Texas Football Coach Says He Ordered Hit On Ref

A Texas high school football coach acknowledged he directed two of his players to hit a referee during a game early this month, according to the school's principal.

In an internal school district statement, John Jay High School principal Robert Harris said assistant coach Mack Breed told him he directed the students to hit the referee because the ref had used racial slurs and had missed calls. Details from the statement were first reported Wednesday by ESPN.

The referee, Robert Watts, has denied using any slurs.

The coach "wanted to take full responsibility for his actions. Mr. Breed at one point during our conversation stated that he should have handled the referee himself," Harris wrote in his statement.

The two suspended students, Michael Moreno and Victor Rojas, appeared Wednesday at separate disciplinary hearings, which were closed to the public. Both were ordered to complete 75 days in alternative school before becoming eligible to return to their regular classes Jan. 15, according to their attorney, Jesse Hernandez. Their punishment had ranged from assignment to an alternative school to expulsion.

Speaking with reporters after Wednesday's hearing, Hernandez cited the Breed statement, saying that if the two players hadn't been directed by the coach and if the referee hadn't used such language, "they wouldn't have done this and they regret it."

Hernandez and Breed, who remains suspended from the district, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.
During an appearance last week on ABC's "Good Morning, America," Moreno said he regretted hitting Watts and wanted to apologize. Rojas said he was just doing what he was told.

UPDATEDTexas Football Players Say Coach Told Them to Strike Referee

The two were suspended from the John Jay High School football team in San Antonio in the aftermath of the Sept. 4 game at Marble Falls. Video from the game shows Rojas blindsiding Watts and Moreno diving on top of him. Watts was the umpire on the defensive side watching a play along the line of scrimmage.
Northside is scheduled to present the findings from its investigation at a meeting Thursday in Round Rock of the state executive committee of the University Interscholastic League, which oversees Texas high school sports, said school district spokesman Pascual Gonzalez.

Thanks for doing this each week SHA. Living out of state now has made following the games pretty difficult. There is always some good insight in this thread.

As much as I love Stephenville, it's hard to believe they're still Top 10 after that game last week. Hopefully they bounce back this week. I'm not optimistic.

Franklin, Class 3A, has been very good for years. Last year a player moved from California, with his Mom. He couldn't play last year, due to the timing of the move, but I understand they are very good this year. He is a senior qb.

Interesting that you bring that team up. Last week I spent about 20 mins in a Stephenville chat during their loss. Lots of people explaining the "why." Consensus was that they are starving for talent and are only riding the system to what success they're getting. Said the team wasn't that talented last year but Stidham made up for a lot. This year, it just isn't there. They had a guy doing play by play and offensively, S'ville just couldn't do a thing.

Maybe it will turn around.

Franklin is ranked #3 in the state in 3A right now, according to the AP. They won last week 57-0.

They play at Buffalo this week. Buffalo is a well below average team this year, so Franklin should roll by a huge margin.

When's the last time Dallas Carter got smoked like that?

When's the last time Dallas Carter got smoked like that?

Things have changed. None of the Dallas schools have very good programs anymore. Skyline is a magnet school so it's the last bastion of quality football in DISD.

The athletes that would normally go to Carter are going to DeSoto and Lancaster instead. DeSoto ISD's boundary line sits only about a quarter mile from David W. Carter High.

Kimball used to be a big time program, but not anymore. Back in the day though, Carter-Kimball was not only a great game, but a showcase of D1 talent.

Camas @ Evergreen tonight to kick off GSHL 4A League play. Game time is 4:30 PM PST.

My Lobos have a tough crosstown battle tonight with the mighty Pine Tree Pirates (not really LOL).  Homecoming and Green Out at Lobo Stadium tonight.

Just arrived at Lamar high school to see my first look of Shane Buechele in action as they take on Arlington Martin.  Other prospects of interest in this game are Lamar's OL Chris Owens (Bama commit) WR Kofi Boateng (Arkansas commit) Madre Harper (Oklahoma State commit)

Internet is spotty so forgive me but these will be chunk updates instead of many small ones.

Buechele drove Lamar right down the field throwing a perfect pass to Kofi Boateng, Lamar scored on a run the next play to make it 7-3. Martin returned the ensuing kick off 97 yards to re-take the lead 10-7. Buechele looks automatic early on. Just as I say that he overthrows Kofi Boateng running wide open down the sideline.

Side note, ran into Tope Imade who is out here supporting Buechele.

Buechele runs for 3 and then hits Boateng again to extend the drive on a nice throw to the sideline. He's got some great zip and a clinical release. He's also working with a pretty good hard count that Martin has been the victim of twice.

Buechele escapes pressure and rolls left to connect on a 24 yard pass thrown perfectly. On the next play he gets sacked as Lamar is having a tough time with Martin's front. Bama commit Chris owens has been beat a few times. Looked like the defender through a jab at Buechele as he was getting up and Shane got pretty hot about it.

He sails a high one just out of reach for his receiver and Lamar will have to settle for a FG.

It's 10-10 here with 2:23 left in the first.
