Hermann needs to go

I havent received a phone call asking for my opinion - yet - but for discussion purposes, here is my preliminary list:

My first phone call & offer would be to...

#1 Kyle Shanahan: Offer him whatever he is making at SanFran (8 digits) and make him say no. I would prefer Kyle over Meyer. I dont think he would accept at this point but he is only averaging .4666 winning percentage in the NFL and that's including the 13-3 super bowl run; so far 2019 looks like an anomaly.  I love his offenses.
How do we know Shanahan would be a good recruiter for UT?

good point... we dont.

however, he is young (40-ish) and likely would relate to young recruits. He also has more cache (esp as a superbowl head coach) than most head coaches. But, as the head coach, he would have to build a staff of good recruiters and then be able to close the deal.  I'm confident he can do that. More than that, my question mark for Kyle is can he build a staff of recruiters that can also coach and develop players, which I think is different than building a NFL staff.  It could be throwing the dice but he could also be the next Pete Carroll. USC took the chance and I would take the same chance on Kyle

Good comparison.

Shanahan is worth exploring if we can't get UM. I like Bryan Harsin but maybe he knows UT's dysfunctional culture too well. At this point, most just want WTH gone.

#2 Urban Meyer. Just stating the obvious.

BIG gap to #3...

#3 Chris Peterson:  He was my mainstay for the Mack Brown replacement list ten years ago and he's still relatively young enough (56)

#4 Bryan Harsin:  A younger Chris Peterson disciple and already knows the Texas atmosphere.

#5 Dan Mullen: Is a favorite of about half of the Texas BMDs and likely a solid, safe choice.

My dark horse...

#6 Jeff Traylor: if they are going to go after someone that doesnt have P5 head coaching experience, why not Traylor?  I think he is a future star.  If you could get Urban Meyer while he was at Bowling Green, would you do it?  Traylor would have immediate Texas high school coach acceptance and would kill it on the recruiting trail.  Great offensive mind and if he keeps someone like Ash for DC (who is also killing it on the defensive recruiting front), he could be a huge success for a LONG time.
Traylor had fallen completely off of my radar. He would be one of those up and comers I would consider. His trajectory as a coach has been nothing but upwards.

Good comparison.

youre one of the only other person I know that mentions the dysfunctional culture besides me, i mentioned that on a post a couple two or three months ago before the wheels fell off this year and was attacked. Apparently 3 coaches in 10 years with the exact same issue with players isn't enough evidence for some people. ?

BryanH  isn't coming back to Austin, he enjoyed his time in Austin but he and his wife are firmly planted in Boise with their families and he just built a new house so I doubt he would even entertain an offer coming back, he looked at the Oregon job one year but he is staying in the NW

Well, UT was certainly dysfunctional with the Charlie Strong hire, but I'd say things have improved since CDC arrived. I think UT leadership was on the same page for the WTH hire, under the interim AD - Perrin, but who knows?

yeah, I dont like to harp on the negative and this is like the Bevo in the china shop.  Austin has more to offer than Waco, Norman, Collie Station, Lubbock, Ames, etc, etc., but it also has more temptations as well.  I dont think "player's coaches" will ever do well in Austin because appeasement doesnt work with constant temptations.  This is also the problem in Los Angeles and what doomed Pete Carroll.

Age shouldnt factor into a decision for the next guy, Nick Saban kills that theory otherwise the rest of your post is spot on.  Either we think they can do it or not, i dont care if hes 21 years old or 69 like ol saint Nick.

I agree... He is from the northwest and likely wants to stay there indefinitely. Like Peterson, I would expect him to end up at Oregon, Utah or Washington.  I think he also has a disabled child (or that could be Peterson) and they like the medical facilities

I believe Urban Meyer will be UT's coach once it's all said and done. However, just in case this is my list of who I believe UT will go after if it doesn't work out with Urban. I didn't put Mario Cristobal on the list since I read we won't go after him because of Nike. I'd rather have other coaches, but that's bullshit.

James Franklin Penn State CDC likes him, so he would be a favorite and happy to get away from Penn State.

Dan Mullen Florida I doubt he would interested since you can win a NC at Florida

Matt Campbell Iowa State

Tom Allen Indiana

Luke Fickle Cincinnati

PJ Fleck Minnesota

Bryan Harsin Boise State

yeah, the word is CDC likes Franklin a lot.  I... not so much.

why Campbell, Allen, Fickle, and Fleck?

I'm with you on that. I'm not a fan of Franklin.

Allen . . . if you can win at Indiana, you can win anywhere. lol

Fickle interests me. He was the DC I believe when TH was the OC at Ohio State.

Not a fan of Fleck.

IMO, Campbell will take the Michigan job if it becomes available.

1. I like the list but I don't know whats going on up at Penn St.???? those guys are 1-5 so far this year! I used to like Franklin but whats going on?

2. Dan Mullen - ummm.....not leaving Florida.

3. Matt Campbell - Im pretty sure he can see the dysfunction plenty from where hes at, why would he come here when he can get to the big XII championship game more often at Iowa st.? Thats an Ouch but true ?‍♂️

4. Tom Allen - Where the heck did he come from? Ive watched a couple of their games, those guys play, but so did the kids for TH at Houston before he came here, I would have to defer to more knowledgeable football people on this one and his interview and how he passes the football eye test from someone that knows what they are looking for and at.

5. Luke Fickle - not bad, same as above as far as deferring.

6. PJ Fleck - another good option, same as #5.

7. Bryan Harsin - pretty sure he also knows how poisonous are culture is too and wouldn't touch this place with anything other than a nuclear bomb.

If it doesn't work out with Meyer then I would hope UT does a real coaching search and  interviews  everyone on their list. They can use my list if it helps. :)

These are the coaches  I would think based on their records and their ability to build a winning program that CDC would want talk to. Cincinnati, Minnesota, Iowa State, and Indiana are all successful programs that in the past has done nothing. The hot name this off season after Urban would be Luke Fickle.

. Since we have struck out on two coaches in a row we can't afford to hire a coach with no head coach experience or a NFL coach with no college head coach experience. The only NFL coach I would want to Matt Ruhle.

You think Fickell is ready to be head coach at a big time program now?  he was turned down as head coach at Ohio St - TWICE - once when he was already interim head coach.  At OSU he was only CO-defensive coordinator twice.

7. Bryan Harsin - pretty sure he also knows how poisonous are culture is too and wouldn't touch this place with anything other than a nuclear bomb.
I disagree that  Harsin wouldn't come because of the culture. It was Mack Brown's culture when he was here. If Harsin was the head coach then it would be his culture.

If he's not interested in the UT job it's because he likes living in Boise like Hiwood said. If we did offer him the job then he would have to think long and hard about turning down a place where you can win National Championships and the chance to be remembered as a great coach. Living in Austin is not too bad and at least you can make a lot more money.

1. Urban Meyer

2. Hugh Freeze

3. Kyle Shanahan

4. Neal Brown

5. Jeff Traylor

could you list "why" for each one?
Urban Meyer - Three national championships. Has been successful at every stop.

Hugh Freeze - Took a terrible Ole Miss team and made them relevant. Has taken a relatively young football program at Liberty and made people notice. Has some baggage but so does Meyer.

Kyle Shanahan - I don't really have a reason here other than the cachet of being a Super Bowl coach and an alumnus.

Neal Brown - Winning 10, 11 and 10 games at Troy. He has already made a difference at WVa.

Jeff Traylor - This one is just a gut feeling. Like I said in an earlier post his trajectory has been upward even after his stint at Arky.
