Here's the reason Gentry decommitted

All the Xs and Os in the world don't matter unless Wickline can improve the Jimmy's and Joe's up front.
I agree with that. But I also think that's why Texas wasn't able to be more multiple this year. I think Wickline/Strong/Watson would have loved to give more looks, but hell the O-line was having enough trouble with very basic blocking schemes.

Gentry said he de-committed from Texas about a week ago “but just kept it quiet.†He had committed to Texas last May.

“You know what, they’re changing the offense at Texas, and I wasn’t totally comfortable with that,†Gentry said. “The Michigan coaches called me a week ago, and the opportunity presented itself.â€

So if we're indeed moving to the spread, and Wickline and Norvell are supposedly the brains behind our implementation of the spread, where does that leave Watson, who is mostly a west coast offense guy?

Watson has always been a multiple guy if he has the right personnel. He ran a lot of spread looks at Nebraska when he was the offensive coordinator.

"The Huskers feature a passing attack with NFL user-friendly West Coast principles (and protections) combined with a multi-faceted running game that possesses elements of the spread, including the zone read. "

I applaud our coaches for keeping Gentry in the loop as far the direction our offense was heading. It gave him the opportunity to decide if Texas was still a fit for his abilities. I wish him luck.

I'm ok with losing Gentry. He's been very classy in public throughout this deal, and I respect that. Wish more kids were like that.

I wish him luck in Ann Arbor. I'll follow his career. Seems like a good kid.
yep. no hard feelings. doing what he thinks is best.

I think a lot of folks are missing on what is going to happen to the offense. We won't be going to the HUNH spread, but to a semi-spread like Ohio State runs. This would not play to Gentry's strengths but would play big time to Heard and Murray's strengths. Locksley's as well if he comes.

It will be an offense designed to hold the ball for a long time. This helps a defense big time. It is easy to see that the Techs and A&Ms of the world suffer on defense because they are on the field a lot more. Strong doesn't want to be like this.

We have a big time football coach and staff. We are all going to enjoy the next few years.

That's what was so surprising with Shawn Watson this past season. At Nebraska, he would have Joe Ganz throwing the ball like crazy but then he would have Rex Burkhead and run the ball alot. This season, he seemed dead set on running a pro system which didn't work. I don't know if that was because of lack of talent or what but it wasn't the Shawn Watson I had seen in the Big 12 north for so many years.

It's good that they are at least switching the system to highlight the strengths of Heard especially.

Amazing so few understandthis simple fact.

Execution is far more important than scheme. . . .

But we ran plenty of tOSU's offense last year. . . .lots of application here.

Nothing we did worked which had more to do with the comment about jimmy's and joes not scheme

But we ran a multiple offense. . .I should have charted it but we were frequently in non-pro style alignments.

As inaccurate as Swoopes was, not sure what offense would have "worked'. . .

PS,

I went back and charted the WVU game. . .busy have work I need to do but can chart more. . .we actually only lined up in a "pro-style" power run under center set 40% of the time and that includes the red zone.

Which means we were lining up in some variation of spread/3 Wides 60% of the time. . .now we will spread and run under center which some might call "pro-style"

But I'll wager our most frequent formation was actually shotgun 3 wide. . . ..just sayin

Now we ran from it more but so did tOSU, 400 passes to 630+ rushes

Pretty much what I thought. Gentry had to do what was best for him.

I am excited that the coaches are not being stubborn on the issue. While the could not just change during the season, now is the time. To me this also points towards the coaches knowing the Swoopes experiment is over.

The spread attack, while not anywhere near a fix all, can cover up some deficiencies in the line a bit. Wick will still need to get that fixed and I think he will.

Duke runs an offense with a WC passing game out of the spread formation. Don't be surprised if this where Texas is going.
