But committing to Aggie? I'm seeing a lot of this. I don't understand.

SignUp Now!Manziel is going to be a powerful recruiting tool for Sumlin for the next few years. No suspension for getting throw in jail, allowed to take an entire semester off from the classroom and take classes online toward he Agricultural Leadership major (is there a more bullsh!t degree program at a major college?), a preferred spot close to the locker room for his Mercedes, Sumlin saying noting about the casino cash flash and the champagne bottles and sparklers night, etc, etc. Sumlin has delivered on that and can honestly tell recruits he can offer an experience unlike other schools. Can anyone imagine Coach Strong tolerating ANY of those things? I'm the last person to consider aggy as a school I would attend, but if I was going to college to play football and not to get a degree, I would certainly consider aggy over UT if UT meant I was going to have to take time away from going to Drake concerts and partying with friends to waste time on classwork. But committing to Aggie? I got to see my first Longhorn game in 1957. It was Texas/OU and for me OU has and will always be our biggest rival. Since then I have watched the Longhorns win many championships including all the MNC we have. I can't put into words how much fun I have watching Texas become one of collage Football all time powers. I think the Longhorns are second in collage football all time wins. I admit that there has been times we have been down. But my Longhorns have never been down for long they always come back. But committing to Aggie? I'm seeing a lot of this. I don't understand.
Exactly! My dad graduated from UT in 1957 and our family has been Longhorn ever since. I'm in my late forties and we still have a picture of me on my 6th birthday standing behind a birthday cake in a "I'm a Little Longhorn" t-shirt with a classic Bevo on it...and we lived in Oklahoma at the time. I sang the "Eyes of Texas" to all 3 of my kids when they were little when putting them to bed and they all know it by heart. Aggie or OU after growing up a "Longhorn fan?" Wouldn't happen...ever. I guess it depends on what you mean by "growing up a Longhorn." To me, if you are willing to go Aggie or Sooner, that just means you weren't a real fan. There are plenty of other schools with which to sign and get television exposure in Texas or out-of-state. No need to join a cult or move 10 years back in time just to play college football. Burnt orange doesn't bleed.I was talking about this the other day. I grew up a Longhorn fan, and if I was a guy and didn't receive a scholarship to play at Texas, I would go somewhere random. Not A&M or OU. I can get wanting to play in Texas, but there are other options.
This here. With the cost education, you have to take what you can get...D1, D2, whatever (we're in this mode with our daughter and B-Ball); and of course whether one wants to play at the college level. But, given UT and A&M both offer, a "lifelong" Horn fan would go with the Horns.TLDR: All this tells me is that these kids didn't grow up lifelong Texas fans... A lifelong Texas fan chooses Texas all day every day and twice on Sunday when Texas is an option.
Good post. They were Longhorn fans because UT was the sexy program when these players were young. UT's NOT the sexy program any longer. Agricultural is. They have a charismatic head coach, and whiz bang offense, and they play in the sexiest conference out there. Sumlin also has been a good enough recruiter to take advantage of UT being down. Finally...there are players out there that are influenced by bling and swag copters. I'm not naive...there may be some money changing hands, but at least right now, that hasn't been proven. UT has some work to do, and plenty of ground to make up. Either the Big XII is gonna have to pull in a couple of attractive teams (Ain't gonna happen...) or one or two current members are going to have to become consistent winners AND attractive nationally (I'm looking at you, Baylor, Okie Lite, and Tech), or UT is gonna have to make a move to another conference (PAC?) to combat the SEC thing. I think Coach Strong is well on his way to making UT different from aggy and other nearby programs that are successful. Under Strong, UT is gonna have a blue collar image, and is gonna attract blue collar players, and to me at least, that's a good thing. Winning in this next two or three years is going to be really important in turning around perceptions, and Strong's staff is going to need to be good at BOTH recruiting and player development. If those things happen, UT will be just fine...but this fix is NOT gonna happen overnight.
