Growing up A Longhorn

They were Longhorn fans because UT was the sexy program when these players were young. UT's NOT the sexy program any longer. Agricultural is. They have a charismatic head coach, and whiz bang offense, and they play in the sexiest conference out there. Sumlin also has been a good enough recruiter to take advantage of UT being down. Finally...there are players out there that are influenced by bling and swag copters. I'm not naive...there may be some money changing hands, but at least right now, that hasn't been proven. UT has some work to do, and plenty of ground to make up. Either the Big XII is gonna have to pull in a couple of attractive teams (Ain't gonna happen...) or one or two current members are going to have to become consistent winners AND attractive nationally (I'm looking at you, Baylor, Okie Lite, and Tech), or UT is gonna have to make a move to another conference (PAC?) to combat the SEC thing. I think Coach Strong is well on his way to making UT different from aggy and other nearby programs that are successful. Under Strong, UT is gonna have a blue collar image, and is gonna attract blue collar players, and to me at least, that's a good thing. Winning in this next two or three years is going to be really important in turning around perceptions, and Strong's staff is going to need to be good at BOTH recruiting and player development. If those things happen, UT will be just fine...but this fix is NOT gonna happen overnight.

But committing to Aggie? I'm seeing a lot of this. I don't understand.
Manziel is going to be a powerful recruiting tool for Sumlin for the next few years. No suspension for getting throw in jail, allowed to take an entire semester off from the classroom and take classes online toward he Agricultural Leadership major (is there a more bullsh!t degree program at a major college?), a preferred spot close to the locker room for his Mercedes, Sumlin saying noting about the casino cash flash and the champagne bottles and sparklers night, etc, etc. Sumlin has delivered on that and can honestly tell recruits he can offer an experience unlike other schools. Can anyone imagine Coach Strong tolerating ANY of those things? I'm the last person to consider aggy as a school I would attend, but if I was going to college to play football and not to get a degree, I would certainly consider aggy over UT if UT meant I was going to have to take time away from going to Drake concerts and partying with friends to waste time on classwork.

I was talking about this the other day. I grew up a Longhorn fan, and if I was a guy and didn't receive a scholarship to play at Texas, I would go somewhere random. Not A&M or OU.

I can get wanting to play in Texas, but there are other options.

There's not enough swag or money to have ever got me to go play for aggie. If i hd an offer from Texas and claimed to have grown up loving Texas, I would have committed on the spot.

I got to see my first Longhorn game in 1957. It was Texas/OU and for me OU has and will always be our biggest rival. Since then I have watched the Longhorns win many championships including all the MNC we have. I can't put into words how much fun I have watching Texas become one of collage Football all time powers. I think the Longhorns are second in collage football all time wins. I admit that there has been times we have been down. But my Longhorns have never been down for long they always come back.

During that time in a attempt to keep pace with the Longhorns I have watched the aggie football team punished for flat out cheating it is well documented. I would even venture to say that the aggie have broken the rules as bad as any that SMU has broken. That got SMU the death penalty and SMU has never recovered from that. On some of the Longhorn boards there was talk when a$m bolted to the SEC how long would it be before they went back to there old ways. In an on going attempt to keep pace with Texas time will tell if a$$m really has reverted back to what they do better than playing football that is bending the rules in there favor. My Longhorn friends y'all have a great week.

look at Ted Koy DVM....he was a heck of a good RB in DKR's wishbone National Championship team...It almost broke my heart when my brother told me he was at A&M in Vet School...of course my brother too was a UT grad, and could not get accepted into any Master's program at UT but did so at Aggieland...he is also a doctor now so all is forgiven, except during FB season

I grew up with burnt orange blood in my veins (mom was a horn). I only applied to 1 school (Texas).

That being said, I played baseball in high school and I had the opportunity to play for a few small programs, but not D1. Texas was my dream school and that's where I decided to go, but I didn't get to play baseball there.

All that being said, I did baseball camp at Texas, Rice & A&M during the summertime each year during high school. If I had received a D1 offer from A&M, and not Texas, I would have taken it as much as it pains me to say that... For what its worth, I would NOT have played at OU. That was the 1 school I was forbidden to attend.

Most of these kids have offers from both Texas & A&M/OU, so it isn't apples to apples...

TLDR: All this tells me is that these kids didn't grow up lifelong Texas fans... A lifelong Texas fan chooses Texas all day every day and twice on Sunday when Texas is an option.

Exactly! My dad graduated from UT in 1957 and our family has been Longhorn ever since. I'm in my late forties and we still have a picture of me on my 6th birthday standing behind a birthday cake in a "I'm a Little Longhorn" t-shirt with a classic Bevo on it...and we lived in Oklahoma at the time. I sang the "Eyes of Texas" to all 3 of my kids when they were little when putting them to bed and they all know it by heart. Aggie or OU after growing up a "Longhorn fan?" Wouldn't happen...ever. I guess it depends on what you mean by "growing up a Longhorn." To me, if you are willing to go Aggie or Sooner, that just means you weren't a real fan. There are plenty of other schools with which to sign and get television exposure in Texas or out-of-state. No need to join a cult or move 10 years back in time just to play college football. Burnt orange doesn't bleed.

This here. With the cost education, you have to take what you can get...D1, D2, whatever (we're in this mode with our daughter and B-Ball); and of course whether one wants to play at the college level. But, given UT and A&M both offer, a "lifelong" Horn fan would go with the Horns.

I've been a Longhorn fan since dirt was young. I attended UT, but didn't graduate from there. (My bad.) If I had a college aged kid looking for a place to go to school, I would be proud if he or she chose UT...and yeah, if they grew up around me, they'd know I love the Horns. That being said, I know the value of a college education from any reputable school, and despite what I might think personally, TAMU and zero-u are reputable schools. OU is even trying hard to improve their academics. I'd want a kid of mine to go to college first, and go to UT, but if not there, then any good school. I understand that a kid who claims to be a lifelong UT fan can change his or her mind, depending on a lot of factors, as the time to go to college gets closer.

1953 My Dad took me (8 years old) to the game (Texas & aggys) and man them football players were huge and knocking the HECK out of each other. I had a great time eating Hot Dogs and getting sick.

Why is this a surprise? My younger sister had her older brother (me) and 5 older cousins graduate from UT. She loved the UT volleyball program. I decked her out in UT gear all through junior high and high school. She got accepted into the Plan II program and had a full ride at UT. Then she got accepted into Yale. She went Ivy. College is a career decision. If you think you can get more playing time, a more prestigious major, etc. elsewhere so be it.

Good post.

A turn around season with a good bowl win will slow aggy momentum and will certainly be a step in the right direction.
