Goodell wants to meet with Strong?

This is NFL PR bullshit! Good thing Goodell didn't ask to speak with Stoops on domestic violence. It's not the core values that are important, it's the willingness to act on them. John Harbaugh wanted to cut Ray Rice, but the owner and GM overruled him.

Report: NFL to meet with Charlie Strong about his '5 Core Values'

Over the last few months its become clear that Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong isn’t just paying lip service to the “5 core values†he espoused upon his hire in Austin, Texas

Since arriving on campus he’s dismissed nine players and suspended three others, all as a result of increased drug testing and personal responsibility failures.

Apparently that no-nonsense approach has gotten the attention of the NFL, who according to a report by Chip Brown (subscription required), will meet with Strong in the coming weeks to learn more about his “5 core values.â€

The five core values for Strong are pretty simple things: honesty, treat women with respect, no drugs, no stealing and no guns.

However, both college and NFL football players have failed to be able to live up to those values.

In the wake of the Ray Rice video release and other domestic violence cases coming down the pipeline, the NFL has taken a huge hit in public confidence. Reaching out to Strong, who hasn’t hesitated to dismiss anyone from his team for violation of those values, is a smart move to help with the public image and the internal culture issue at hand.

What remains to be seen is if putting those type of values at the front of the NFL will work to change perceptions, or if it will be about the actions taken by NFL executives and the players themselves that will matter most.

Very interesting. I think in the long run this will help with recruiting. Sure you are going to have some highly skilled players, nervous about coming to Texas, but are they truly what you want? The highly skilled players that want to come to Texas will be the right ones to help take us back to the top. The parents will love this and the recruits, whose parents hold a strong influence over, look strongly at Texas for what CS is doing.

Makes me a bit proud honestly. It's been a long time since one could point at Texas as the model for the way you should do things. Strong is changing more than Texas football culture, he's changing football culture as a whole. It won't be long until other coaches feel the pressure to uphold those same standards when parents start talking/asking about the discipline, responsibility and accountability at Texas.

I absolutely agree with your opening statement. This is pure posturing by Goodell. I'm not even sure what there is to meet about. Strong's 5 core values are very straight forward and if Goodell can't understand them then he has other issues.

It great when CS and the University Of Texas can get that kind of headline. My friends y'all have a great day

This is lovely news.  It matters not what the motivation was to contact Strong.  We know why they are doing it and it is the NFL publically efforting to associate with the values of Strong.  It's all bs PR, but it is TREMENDOUS for UT.

I cannot emphasize more strongly how important this is to Longhorn recruiting - in all of our sports.  This not just an endorsement of Strong and his program, it exemplifies UT's desire to hire and implement these kinds of people.

Strong and his coaches now need to double down on their primary targets (MJ anyone?).

Roger Goodell reportedly wants to meet with Charlie Strong

Some Texas fans may not appreciate Charlie Strong‘s brand of discipline, but one very powerful — and beleaguered — man apparently does.

With the NFL in general and his handling of Ray Rice specifically drawing intense and pointed criticism from both inside and outside the sports world, Roger Goodell is looking to meet with the Texas head coach at some point in the coming week, Chip Brown of Horns Digest is reporting ($ link).  In addition to the commissioner, DeMaurice Smith, the head of the NFL player’s union, is expected to meet with Strong as well.

Two of the most powerful men in sports want to meet with the first-year UT coach to discuss his “Five Core Values.† For those unfamiliar, Strong’s list is a very simple — and common sense — approach to building a football program and, most importantly, turning players into men.

1. Honesty
2. Treat Women With Respect
3. No Drugs
4. No Stealing
5. No Guns

Strong has come under fire from some for dismissing nine players over the last eight months as he attempts to change the culture in Austin. His emphasis on drug testing has likely played a role in at least one, if not more, of those dismissals.

One of Strong’s most loyal lieutenants doesn’t understand what all of the fuss is about over Strong’s dedication to his core principles.

“He puts [the core values] on the wall and [the perception is] it’s like a new thing, like somebody wrote the Bible,†UT defensive coordinator Vance Bedford said earlier this month. “Well … teach a woman with respect. If you have a son, won’t you teach him that? I never had a gun. My mom never let me have a gun. My wife surely won’t let me have a gun. What’s wrong with that? No drugs. What’s wrong with that? Don’t steal. What’s wrong with that? What’s big about those core values? It’s the same thing every parent out there teaches.â€

At least as far as Goodell and Smith appear to be concerned, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Even as Strong’s strident and strict approach could never, ever work in the NFL — hello, union, owners — perhaps the two men could learn something, anything that will keep individuals from further embarrassing their precious “Shield.â€

Great news for CFS and the program b/c recruits with NFL ambition will take notice!

Finally, more good press for Texas Football.  Suck it, Paul Finebaum and ESecPN!  \m/

Ian Rapoport is apparently reporting on NFL Network that the story about Goodell wanting to meet with Strong is false. Per a Bryan Fischer tweet.

But again, is anyone else reporting it?
Not that I've seen. I have a hard time believing Chip would make up a story up of this magnitude. Granted, it's Chip Brown. I also don't think the NFLPA would be randomly tweeting, "Charlie Strong.....good guy". Based on Chip's history nothing would surprise me to be honest. I tend to think the story is still true though.
