Good read on Texas football

I came here this hour to post that I anticipate an 8-game run to finish 10-2, and conference standing depending on rounds of upsets/key games.

Either way, a New Year's Day bowl game, thereabouts.

This has the makings of a Hero Story. Reading that list on the post, some I knew, many I did not... that's how you set up the final act of a Hero Story. It's all down to turning the tide.

Yes I've been disappointed in the length of time to make coaching decisions and evaluate the staff as hard as evaluating the players. Something has to change. If Charlie takes over the defense and the players buy in and execute... then you've got a Band of Brothers. And a leader. And it is then feasible to decide this season that from now on there will be no Hall Passes handed out to the coaching staff.

I want to also say I am disappointed that any assistant coach would ever let their assigned position fail to meet the highest standards of planning, teaching and execution. They owe it to the players as much as anything.

If the team can lock down OU, the thing I most want to see is no hoopla. I want to see steel-eyed lunch-pail workmanship. Post game comments more like "okay, next." Moving on to the next game. Got seven more to go. One at a time. We'll enjoy this the rest of the day and trip back to Austin, then it's get to work.

Epictetus, I'm holding out hope that the defense performs better for Chuck, and they play for him like his job is counting on it (since it is). However, I'm thinking a best case scenario under those circumstances would be 8-4. That said, I hope you prove the great majority of us wrong and get to tell us, "I told you so."

Based on that last sentence of the article, it poses an interesting hypothetical. As a Longhorn fan, would you rather (1) have Charlie win out or (2) have Charlie crater if we were guaranteed Herman as the next coach.

I know I would take option 1 all day, every day. However, I'm not sure that would be everyone's choice.

#1 should have been happening already. Last Saturdays game took all of the hope I had in Strong and flushed it.

I always want Texas to win out all day, every day.

I don't think Charlie is capable of making that happen. I do think Herman is capable of making that happen.

Right there with you. I think there is a 0.1% chance of Charlie pulling that off. I was just curious what people's response would be, especially considering the end of that article. From talking to my group of Longhorn friends, it's split about 50/50.

Very well-written article. I've never wanted a coach to succeed so badly, but after last week it's becoming really hard to justify keeping him.

the only point i will contest is Strong declining a penalty that the refs had to talk him out of because the sideline ref told Texas sidelines the play would not count if you watch Charlie when the other ref came over to ask about taking penalty Charlie pointed at the ref who told him play wouldn`t count.

all Texas fans can do is let season play out if team wins enough games Charlie will stay as coach if not time for some BMD`S to unlock their chechbooks

Well done and echoes my sentiments exactly. I want with every fiber of my being for Charlie to be successful. I also have seen no evidence over his 2-plus seasons that he can sustain any consistency. Right now we are poor in two of the three phases of the game -- defense and special teams. No team can have sustained success with that. Our offense has improved, but the bar was pretty low, and really how good are the defenses we've faced? I've really yet to see a receiver emerge as the alpha dog. Jake Oliver comes close. JAKE OLIVER!?!?! The defense ... who on our defense do teams really have to scheme against? Jefferson? Pfft. Sorry, I'm not of the camp that Jefferson is the next Nobis or Derrick Johnson. Not. Even. Close. Perhaps he's out of position at MLB. If only we had a coach with a defensive pedigree who could recognize that, if that is the case.

I've tried every possible way to imagine how Charlie can turn this around, and I just can't see it. I hope I'm wrong. Please prove me wrong, Coach. I've had your back for three seasons now, but this "KIck Me" sign is really getting old.
