Yes, he deserves an extension. 

I personally don't think an extension would be done without there being some language involved that puts Skip at the helm at the end of Augie's term. 

That is merely my opinion, though. Interesting topic of discussion.

From a fan perspective, Augie has earned the right. However, there may be more behind the scenes that we don't know about.

I don't want to lose Skip, but Augie has the skins and was one out from the CWS title series this year. It'll be tough to justify not giving him an extension.

please allow me to steal a page from FOB.  with what some of us may now know.. augie garrido, should seriously consider taking a final glorious bow, and officially hand over the UT baseball baton.  period!

I like Augie as a person. He is a great guy, so far as I know.  He is interesting and has much more substance than your average baseball coach/manager.  I sometimes watch his show on LHN when he visits with different chefs around town, participates in the food prep and then tests the dish right there standing in the kitchen. That is a great show concept and execution - if you love good food (and don't hate meat eaters).

And I will also concede that you guys above are probably correct that this season cemented an contract extension, if that's what he wants.  I accept this outcome acknowledging, as I must, that I have no hope to change it.

Nonetheless, for the record, I will again register my objection to his philosophy and style of baseball.  I think it ignores reality.  While it may get you into the conference post season on a somewhat regular basis (due to superior talent), the probabilities suggest that, over the course of time, it does not win you championships.  In my opinion, this style always ends up in the same place -- being carried only as far as your young pitchers can take you.  It's not the best situation for you or the young pitchers as it puts too much stress/reliance on them.  But, to me, the single overriding issue is that it is simply not the smartest way to play baseball.

It'll be interesting to see how the "new & improved" NCAA baseball effects the game next season. Word is, the ball will be more tightly wound and have lower seams.  That won't help our pitching, but maybe it's a wash with improved hitting?

He's only got one more year on his contract, right?  I'd hate to lose Skip because I hear he's really the glue that holds this team together.  Augie should step aside, but he won't.  Three more years is probably too many.

I don't envy Patterson's dilemma here.

A very wise man once told me that compromise is the art of finding a middle ground satisfactory to everyone, where no one person gets exactly what they want. What is wrong with a one year extension? Augie doesn't need three. Skip would probably accept the upcoming + one with head coaching pay, plus a guarantee, not a probably, ahem, at the end of Augie's tenure.

I would give Augie a two-year extension with the understanding that after next year those final two years will be paid off in a lump sum equal to the contract. So he coaches one more year then gets a two-year golden parachute. I think he deserves it and has earned it. But I do not want to lose Skip.

Skip is already running the Baseball program and if Augie does get extension....then Skip should be paid top dollar to stay to take over in 3 not 4 years. This is what I think. How do you guys feel about this situation.

I like this idea, everybody is rewarded and we do what's best for the program.  Win-win to me.
