*****GAME THREAD: #15 Texas Longhorns vs. TCU Horned Frogs*****

We can NOT bring back this staff the way it is and not bc someone voluntarily leaves though that’s fine also. Herman must decide this is unacceptable, not have it come from CDC

Right now I hope the whole staff gets fired. This is year 3 and they are getting worse. I'm trying to think of a worse HC in the B12. I can't come up with one. Herman looked good at Houston  and the UT big wigs jumped on him. Now it looks like a big mistake just like Strong was. Recruiting will most likely go to crap. 6 wins this season would be a stretch. I gave Charlie 3 seasons.  3 seasons for Herman is enough.

You we have many problems but its embarrassing that we are so inept on special teams that we just decided to fair catch everything. I honestly can’t remember the last time Texas had even an average special teams system. We’ve been terrible at ST for many many years.

Got busy and missed the 2nd half. Looks like Sam shit the bed. 3 TO's?

This will drop us out of the top 25.

I checked the schedule and our next three games are against Kansas State, Iowa State, and Baylor. Right now that looks like three more loses.

That means we will go into our final game against Texas Tech with a 5-6 record. Charlie Strong was fired in his third season with a 5-7 record. If UT with 5-7 record will Herman be fired or get a pass?
In that scenario, Tom's 5-7 is still not comparable to Charlie's because of their record in the 2 previous years so he gets a pass.

The roll right and INT towards Wiley was his worst throw since his Fr year.

our offensive game plan is horrendous. I could come up with better in 30 min. It’s like they spent all week doing nothing. Sam needs more designed runs. More 10 and 20 personnel. More bunch formations. Much better route concepts. Some more misdirection.

on D, 3 DL just isn’t working. Either have the B-backer lines up there and come off the edge or go to 4 DL. Nobody can tackle in the open field. Our DBs are so concerned with run support they don’t watch the WR run straight down the field open. Our 5 minute late delayed blitzes SUCK!! bring them at the snap or have them try to cover. Yes we have injuries but looking this clueless is on the coaches.

this is much more of a coaching issue than players on the field though they play without using their heads often.

I was at the game and viewed it from the upper deck perspective.  Here are a few random observations:

Our defense almost never tries to pressure the QB with the traditional 4 (down linemen and an OLB).  Pressure is attempted with anything from safeties to corners to ILBs coming up the middle. It is not about beat your man but fool your man.  This is a better recipe for a mid Major who can’t match up player for player IMHO.

I put most of the woes on offense at the feet of our OL.  It doesn’t matter what play you call if your OL can’t block the person in front of them. Perhaps Hand should feel some of the heat here.  How many “illegal player downfield”penalties must we endure this year?  The holding penalties are simply because people are getting beat.

IMO Sam has regressed from last year.  There might be reasons (like O Line) but he doesn’t seem like the same QB I saw last year.

Is it me or does our offense look slow?  Man it looks like we need speed!  And do they know you can make a first down when it’s not third or fourth down??

Back to defense.   Our base alignment seems to be a 3-3-5 and depending on the situation, we run in more DBs.  You can pretty much see huge running lanes just in the alignment.  I looked up at one time and we had one DL in the game.  We’re still texas right?  What is this???

At the end of the game the fans began to chant, “same old Texas.” I’ve never heard that before.... to be honest, I’m not sure if it was TCU or Texas fans... or both.

Coming into this game Texas had the more prolific offense...frogs had significantlly less on offense. So why would orlando not bring the pressure with 6-7 guys playing closer to the LOS? Patterson was playing our offence more conventional with his defensive plan and he definitely won that battle...sam threw four picks and the offense was well below the numbers put up in previous games..so if patterson can play texas high power offense like that why cant orlando play tcu the same way?

Great thoughts 83. I wondered after the 1st qtr why we went away from the run so quickly. At one point Ingram had something like 71 yards on 13 carries and looked the best I can remember. His runs looked strong, with a burst and the plays looked to be quicker developing. Running plays in the second half looked slower and much fewer lanes. It also seems like we have gone away too much from the designed runs by Sam. He can make plays with the pass but our offense is the most effective when it is built on the run. I also believe that our OL is better at run blocking than pass blocking and a reliance on the deep passing game puts them at a disadvantage.

It definitively looked like a conservative defensive game plan to try and protect the dbs. I've always believed that it is easier to cover when you apply pressure. Unfortunately it seems like the pressure schemes rarely get home which doesn't help the dbs at all.

I saw a 4 down line once in the first half. There could have been more. The arrogance of this staff is killing this team. The defense seemed to fix their issues in the first half, while the offense seemed to regress. Go figure.

Mensa is really pissing me off with his attitude. He talks like he knows his shit at the press conference, but then the game starts.

I was in section 406. Where were you?

Sam telegraphs his throws. He needs to look off the safety from time to time. From section 406 I knew where the ball was going.

Our plays develop slowly. I don't know if we're slow or if its the plays, but it all unfolds slowly.

Last week I reserved judgement until I saw more of the season. Well, you guys were right and I was wrong. We're in a funk and can't seem to find our way out of it.

TCU always plays us lights out. Even still, we should have won that game. Patterson made some defensive halftime adjustments and we had no answer.

We did start Estelle and Owens at safety and we were punished by Cumbie all day. We've got to get healthy, fast.

Now, the remaining question is does this team quit and continue its downhill slide? Or will they fight through it together? This would be one of those times when a team falls apart, if its going to fall apart.

Are we on a collision course with Aggie in Houston?  Yes that would require us to win 1 more game at least but I think it’s Most possible scenario

I was on the visitor side 2nd deck.... section 233.

I seriously am astonished at the defensive philosophy.   I believe it was Chizik who came to Texas and said something like this, “even against the spread you have to take away the run... you have to make them one dimensional.”   From my vantage point, we surrender the run.  And we combat the pass by taking bigs off the field and replacing them with smalls.   I’m sure that Todd Orlando knows more about running a defense than I.... but I’m astonished that this philosophy is present at The University of Texas where we typically get the pick of the litter in recruiting.  Really, we can’t take 4 DL and line them up against TCUs O Line and create any semblance of a pass rush?

My thoughts exactly

Our entire football program is a historically under achieving dumpster fire. We've been more the last 10 years than we have 2005 and 2009. It is what it is.

Kansas beat TT. hope is left for one more win.

As for as a new off. cord. any one would be an improvement.
