Solving the Texas Longhorn riddle. I have read so many comments on the reasons why we cannot seem to win close games, complete for Big12 championships, and return to our former glory of being in the national championship race. It's the OL, no the DL, no the QB, no the play calling, no the conditioning, no the coaching, no its the BMD's, etc... The truth, maybe its a confluence of them all.
We have everything that we need to succeed but have failed over and over. As of this moment I cannot say with absolute certainty but when I look at the past 8 years I think the biggest cause for our failure post Mac Brown is the head coaching choices. Due to recent history and the high profile nature of UT football it does take someone that is very good at managing all aspects of the program. Having truck loads of money and elite facilities has not been able to produce anything close to a championship team. You have to acquire quality players but to a greater degree they MUST be developed in all aspects of football.
How is it that a Baylor can be loaded with 2 and 3 star players then lose their head coach because of a scandal and right now they are sitting at 6-1? Have we ever seen that type of thing at Texas? The point is that Texas needs to find their Dave Aranda, the coach that fits exactly what we need. I am not saying that coach Sarkesian is not that man but I am not saying that he is. No doubt he is a great OC and proved as much last year with a national championship but that alone does not mean he will have that same success as a head coach. If we look at his head coaching record up to this point we would all agree that he is average at best. Time will provide the answers as to whether or not he is the man. I do believe that this is the key for Texas to achieve. I think that this is how we solve the riddle.
Everyone looks back at the Saban hire and wonders what could have been. Most would agree that we would not be the mediocre team that we have been over the past 10 years. Saban has a proven record of winning no matter the school or environment minus his NFL career. He just wins. He makes everyone around him bend to his will and his vision. So we need hope that Sark can do just that because if he cannot we will most assuredly continue to fuel the perception that the whole college world has of us, spoiled losers that are irrelevant to college football and should only be known for horns down.
