Game 1 - OU at Texas (Recap added)

I know pitching and defense are staples in Garrido's system but this team flat-out needs offensive firepower.

If anybody posts something about this just being part of the process as Augie builds to the postseason and that all is well I'm gonna vomit.

Just one of those years unfortunately. Can't win ballgames.
Been one of those years for all major sports, and I'm tired of it! Lots of swinging for the fences tonight and of late; let's put the ball in play rather than whiffing on crappy pitches. Another year of decent pitching circling the drain due to poor hitting and lack of run support. I'm going to jump in my hot tub time machine back to 2005 and win some titles!

Not being pessimistic but I do not believe we will be making the tournament this year. And to make it worse aggy is playing with the best team they've ever had while this May be one of our worst. Fml

If I see people fly open on the front side pulling off everything and I'm looking squarely at you CJ Hinojosa and Tres Barrera I'm going to puke. Son of a buck you want to hit the ball 900 feet so be it but pulling off just creates top spin anyway. Top spin equals weak ass ground balls. Foot. I was at the head of the band wagon for a long ass time.

I've said it before. This isn't a staff problem, this is a hard headed no BALLS problem from upper classmen.

FINAL: Oklahoma 3 – Texas 2

For the third consecutive weekend, the Texas Longhorns lost an extra-inning game, squandering multiple chances to win. On Friday, Texas lost to Oklahoma 3-2 in 12 innings, despite solid outings from the pitching staff.

The Texas offense left nine men on base in the game, and was held scoreless for the game’s final eight frames. Oklahoma’s 2 through 4 hitters were 7-16 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk while only striking out once. Contrast those totals with Tres Barrera, CJ Hinojosa and Collin Shaw who combined to hit 1-15 with four strikeouts.

After the game, Augie Garrido talked about the team’s inability to execute and failure to take care of the fundamentals of the game. He continued, “When our veteran hitters strike out on balls out of the strike zone over, and over, and over again – it’s a lack of execution.”

Starting pitcher Parker French kept OU in check for most of the night, throwing 7.2 innings and allowing just two runs, only one of which was earned. French struck out a batter in the seventh inning, but Barrera was unable to secure the pitch, allowing the batter to reach base. OU took advantage of the extra out, tying the game on an RBI single in the next at bat.

After a two out double by Brooks Marlow and an intentional walk to Ben Johnson, the Horns appeared in position to win the game in the 10th inning, but Barrera struck out swinging to end the rally.

In nearly the exact same type of situation, Oklahoma got a two-out double and an intentional walk in the twelfth inning. However, the next batter, Austin O’Brien, capitalized on the opportunity with a game-winning RBI single.

POST GAME

Augie Garrido

On his diagnosis of the game: â€œThe runs [our defense] put them in position to get to tie the score were a result of not playing fundamentally sound baseball. The lack of runs [on offense] came from the lack of extended rallies, and [lack of] advancing runners into scoring position when we had the lead-off hitter on. It absolutely gets down to the fundamentals of the game and the execution of the plays that will set up - get your lead-off hitter on, advance the lead-off hitter into scoring position and then get a hit and score the run. It all gets back to, if you don't get runs yourself, then you can't cover up the details of the mistakes that you make.”

On potential lineup adjustments: â€œWe have other players that can play. [bret] Boswell can play now, his back is better. At the same time, the coaching staff is trying to be optimistic and help them gain confidence by the way we're practicing. [We want them to gain confidence] with the drills we're doing, the competitiveness that we're putting into the practices and the fun we're putting into the practices. However, tonight was not an extension of the way we've practiced the last two days and the way we competed in the last two days.”

Ben Johnson

On whether if the lineup can overcome the slump: â€œYeah, absolutely. We show it every day in practice. We showed it in the fall, we've shown it early on, it's just not clicking right now. It could be we're trying too hard. It could be some things just aren't going our way. No one really has the answer, but we've just got to keep sticking with it and get it turned around.”

On another extra inning loss: â€œObviously it's not fun, but it's baseball, so I keep grinding through it and just find a way to come out on top and stick with it.”

On offensive issues: â€œWe didn't execute. We didn't get bunts down that we needed to. We swung at pitches that were out of the zone. We didn't execute, and you're not going to win baseball games that way.”

Fact number one: Your season is a failure if you are unable to score more than one or two runs per game.

“We have other players that can play. [bret] Boswell can play now, his back is better. At the same time, the coaching staff is trying to be optimistic and help them gain confidence by the way we're practicing." - Augie Garrido

That quote makes today's lineup an interesting decision.

Ben Johnson says there's "absolutely" a good offensive team in the Texas locker room still.

Why doesn't that team come out and play then? Or are they an "All Lobby Team"?

Yes it does.
