Happy Friday, folks!
Recruiting wise, this week did not go extremely well for Tom Herman and the Longhorns. First, Salvatore Cannella, the 2nd best JUCO TE in the country signed with Auburn over Texas. That was not a surprise. Herman had a little over 2 weeks to build a relationship with Cannella, and ultimately Auburn's lengthy recruitment of the Scottsdale CC product paid off.
This morning, Walker Little chose Stanford over Texas. This was more surprising due to the fact that Little had long been considered a Texas lean. The past few days, however, something changed. Ultimately, I believe there was too much uncertainty with Texas for Little. When you have 3 straight seasons of 6 wins or less, it's hard to see any big time recruits packing their bags and coming to Austin. That's just the reality of the situation. Tom Herman is not to blame for the recruiting woes as of late. He has certainly scrambled to build relationships with these recruits over the past 3 weeks, but it has not paid off yet.
Ultimately, recruiting will start to turn around once Texas starts winning football games. That's just the reality of the situation. I do think that Herman will bring in a decent recruiting class. However, it will not be of the magnitude that Charlie Strong did after a 5-7 season.
Do not freak out yet. Everything is going to be okay. Tom Herman has prepared his entire career for a job of this magnitude. You will see the recruiting results pay off in the long run.
Lastly, expect a ton of staff movement after Houston's bowl game on Saturday. Also, tune in to the game to see what type of defense Texas is going to run. It is still fully expected that Todd Orlanda and Craig Naivar will join Herman after the bowl game. One name that keeps appearing for the OC job is Tim Beck. Beck is not known as an exemplary recruiter, but he is familiar with Herman and his offensive philosophy.
What are your thoughts? I am usually a glass half empty kind of guy, but I can't help but keep my glass half full because of who the Longhorns have leading their program. I am confident that Herman will get the job done.
