9. Roschon Johnson (1-0) Port Neches-Groves (Port Neches, TX) Johnson had 351 yards of offense by himself Friday night in a 48-14 win over Silsbee. Johnson rushed for three touchdowns on runs of 7, 3, and 18 yards. He was 18 of 27 passing for 247 yards and no INTs. He also rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries.

My hometown high school, defending 3A-II champs, Newton Eagles, are ranked #1 in the Nation by MaxPreps, in small school category. Three of their studs have given a verbal to TCU. The running back in that trio, Darwin Barlow, has an offer from USC as well. He is in the backfield of a super all-state team that is comprised of all six Classes.

Newton's uniforms bumped up a notch this season and look pretty sharp. The skill position guys look to have 0% body fat!! They play #1-ranked 4A-II West Orange Starks on the road in two weeks, and after that host Gilmer, another 4A-II powerhouse. In all they play 3 top-ranked 4A-II schools and only play 9 regular season games as they struggled to get anyone on their non-district schedule.

You don't have to sell Newton here. We know Newton. And I know Barlow (know he's good) and have whined about our staff not going after him.

As for your upcoming games . . . 

Newton over West Orange-Stark. And I don't think thats an upset.

Gilmer will be a problem. If you can beat their system, you can beat them. I don't think WSO is their usual dominant selves, but Gilmer simply reloads, plug and play. If you play them at home, you can pull it off.

A tip of the hat to Newton for scheduling these types of games.

We'll see.  And do not ever remember Sept weather being this much of an issue for high school football years and years ago. Or did it and I just can't recall.

Yeah, we had a tropical storm move through a few years back and cancelled a bunch of Friday night games. 

Then there was the year of the tropical storm that had almost all of the golden triangle schools cancelling their first three games of the season due to widespread flooding.
