Friday Night Lights – STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK

Class 4A Div 2 State Final

Cuero 40  (Jordan Whittington)

Pleasant Grove 28

FINAL

Whittington has 334 yards rushing, a new all-classification record for state final games. He scored 6 touchdowns, 5 of them rushing, another a reception.

They basically put the game on his back and he responded in a huge way. Glad he's coming to Texas!
I saw him in person yesterday and he is unreal. He has such a quick burst that just allows him to accelerate through the hole. He is in incredible shape and is extremly strong. There is not enough credit given to his offensive linemen. He had a couple of road graders that could move.

Whittington's dominating performance made me think of the last high school player that had such an impact on a game. Basil Shabazz from Pine Bluff, AR did the same thing to Texarkana AR High in the 1990 Arkansas State Championship game. Before some claim it's AR high school football, go look up Basil Shabazz. He never played college football. He was drafted and played minor league baseball.

Texas is getting a good one in Whittington and he will be fun to watch over the next few years. Keep an eye on PG next year and Landon Jackson. Unfortuanely, Jackson had season ending knee surgery at the end of the regular season. He should be ready to go by the start of his junior season and he likes Texas.

My thoughts on the Marshall-Aledo game . . . .

I was not real impressed with Malik Hornsby. He's got the quicks, the burst, etc., but I didn't see a leader, a fighter and saw no confidence. Maybe it was just a bad game for him, I don't know. But it was my one shot to see him in action. He did not shine on the big stage.

I've heard the comparisons to Vince, but don't see it other than they are similar in build. Vince was a man among boys at Madison.

Aledo's Chase McClellan looked awesome. He does benefit from a very good offensive line that simply wore out Marshall. I do think he runs too straight up and will pay for that at some point. Would love to see him flip to Texas before next year.

Would someone please explain to this old guy what it means when the kids do the "shoveling move" with their hands to their mouths?

It dawned on me watching the game but I know the Shadow Creek HC. I rented a beach house across the street from his a couple of times. Pretty nice guy for an aggy.

One last thing, is it me or is anyone else noticing that the Highland Park players are taking some cheap shots after the plays are dead?

Duncanville doing good job on Evan's, but really want to see him get going just for the fun of it.
We're looking at him, but also the Thompson kid from Duncanville (Safety) and the DV QB. We also want the left OT for North Shore Damieon George. George got a flag for nastiness earlier. I luv it.

A few thoughts so far . . . . Not real impressed with Zach Evans. Big time players play big on the big stage. He's MIA, thanks largely to a good Duncanville run D. But again, big time players overcome that.

Dameion George, the GPNS OT, is a nasty cuss. He's been flagged twice for scrapping. Sign that man up!

Chris Thompson is a player. He's been beaten twice on passes but didn't let it get in his head. Glad we're recruiting him.

Shandrick Banks is a playmaker (GPNS). We should be recruiting him if we're not.

Jackson, DV's QB, is smooth as silk. Sees openings no one else sees. I'm hooked. Get him in this class.
