IMG split into two varsity teams

How good is IMG Academy football? With any luck, the Ascenders could win 21 varsity games next season.

A little explanation: IMG (Bradenton, Fla.), which only played nine games two seasons ago, will have two varsity football teams this fall.

One team will play a ridiculously tough 11-game national schedule that opens with a Kickoff Classic exhibition game with Florida 6A champion Carol City (Miami) and includes regular-season road games with Arizona 6A state champion Chandler, CIF Southern Section Open Division semifinalist Centennial (Corona), Utah 4A champion East (Salt Lake City) and Alabama 7A champion Hoover.

The other varsity squad will play 10 Florida 4A and 3A opponents, including 4A state semifinalist Berkeley Prep (Tampa). It will be coached on game days by IMG running backs coach Kenneth Stills.

IMG coach Kevin Wright said the split teams will allow all 120 players to get a chance to play a full varsity schedule. Neither team will compete in the state playoffs.

“This really opens up a lot of opportunity,†Wright said. “It allows us the flexibility for a kid to move up (to the national-level team). Probably the greatest element is the ability for all 120 kids to get that Friday night lights experience.â€

Wright has coached larger teams. At Warren Central (Indianapolis) and Carmel (Ind.), he had more than 200 players grades 9-12 in each case, so he doesn’t feel having a second varsity team will be that complicated. He said he’ll run practices in a similar way to how Michigan ran theirs in the spring of 2016 at IMG.
“Ultimately, schematically, everybody is doing the same thing,†Wright said. “On game-prep weeks, one team will go out on the field first and do their game prep, their 7-on-7 work, while the other team is inside, doing film analysis. Then, we’ll bring the team that was inside out, and we’ll do our individual work together and then the other team will do their inside prep. It may sound complicated, but I think it works. We have a plan and from my standpoint, I’ll get to see every kid, every day. At the same time, we’re preparing for two different opponents.â€

Nearly every team on IMG’s elite team schedule has been ranked in the Super 25 in the past few seasons.

Rondale Moore

Adeoye, IMG take on Chandler

Rondale Moore and the Louisville (KY) Trinity Shamrocks lambasted Carmel (Ind) High last week in their season opener, 31-3. Trinity is last year’s Kentucky Class 6A State Champion and ripped off a 15-0 record and Maxpreps national ranking. Carmel was the defending Indiana state champ in their class 6A.

This week, things get no easier for Moore and the Rocks as they travel to Indianapolis to play Warren Central High, a quarterfinalist last year.

IMG Academy, where Texas commit Ayodele Adeoye plays on the Ascenders’ “Blue Teamâ€, opened against nationally ranked Miami Carol City and won 41-22.

Adeoye and IMG will travel to Chandler, Arizona this week to on take the second of five nationally ranked opponents on their schedule this season. Chandler is the 7th ranked team in MaxPreps Top 25 national poll. Texas target Noah Cain also plays for IMG Blue. Cain had 75 yards rushing and two TDs in last week’s win over Carol City.

The IMG vs Chandler game will be televised on ESPN and ESPN3 so Longhorn fans will be able to see Adeoye and Cain on TV this week.

So IMG is a private school? Do they give scholarships for some of these kids or is it all out of pocket bookoo's of money this kids gotta come up with? Pretty impressive but I dont think it needed to get nationally recognized.

Yes, and I believe they do have some sort of scholarship/financial aid thing in play for those who can't pay outright.

IMG gets national attention because they are almost an all-star team, drawing some high quality talent from all over the nation. Some players have stated that they went to IMG to "get better" but I'm not sure what IMG could offer that a kid can't get anywhere else, especially in Texas.

For me, it would suck to go to IMG and know you're not playing for a district title and will not participate in a playoffs or win a state title. So I imagine that just keeping kids focused is a challenge because of that. But kids at IMG will never know that playoff experience or title game where everything is on the line.

They seem to do a good job because only one team last year really came close enough to call it a game. And they go out and schedule the best teams around, so I respect that.

Cedar Hill vs Allen, 7:30 p.m. Eagle Stadium (Allen)

So I'm going to assume IMG blue team is ranking #1 in nation? I agree 100% I'd rather my kid get the HS life and the memories of a winning or losing a state title. It'd help em grow in life. My opinion, everyone needs to know how it feels to lose or fail

They are tied for third with Las Vegas Gorman

Allen vs Cedar Hill in the Tom Landry Classic is going to be a good game. Should get a good feel for how good this young Allen team is and a good look at QB Grant Tisdale to see if he can handle the Friday Night Lights!

Schools along the Gulf coast are of course cancelling scrimmages for tonight and tomorrow.

I would also expect the first game of the season to be cancelled for many teams as Hurricane Harvey is now expected to dump as much as 53 inches of rain on places like Port Lavaca. Thats 4.5 feet of rain. This will affect schools/games from Brownsville to Corpus to Houston and Beaumont and through at least 150 miles inland.

Stay tuned, this could get very ugly. Prayers to our friends along the coast and hoping they've evacuated already.

Louisville Trinity has defeated Indianapolis Warren, 42-41. Trying to chase down stats for Rondale Moore. I know he had one nice long run that set up a TD.

Thanks for the assist, Daniel!

Rondale Moore had 8 catches for 127 yards. He also had 4 carries for 37 yards.

Warren Central latest Indiana power to fall to Louisville Trinity

INDIANAPOLIS – A week after knocking off Class 6A No. 1 Carmel at home, Louisville (Ky.) Trinity beat No. 2 Warren Central 42-41 on the road Friday night for a sweep of Indiana’s top two big-class programs of the past 15 years.

Led by Luke McGuire’s five touchdown runs, Trinity — the top-ranked team in Kentucky’s largest class, and No. 25 in this week’s USA TODAY Super 25 — scored 35 points in the second half and stopped a two-point conversion that could’ve given Warren Central the win.

“You have to measure your football team, and my gosh, we knew what a quality program we were playing,†Trinity coach Bob Beatty said. “We got a stop when we needed it, and I think our tempo got to them a bit in the second half. They’re hard to tackle, fabulous athletes.â€

Dean Tate threw for 366 yards and three TDs, Daijour Griffie had 193 receiving yards and two scores and Romier Elliott ran for 179 yards and three TDs, but Warren Central (1-1) gave up big plays and got whistled for penalties at key times.

“We came up a little short and just have to regroup and get better,†Warren Central coach Jayson West said. “We have to play smarter, understand situations and stop the run better if we’re going to be successful in the MIC."

Tate hit David Bell for a 66-yard TD and Griffie on a 74-yard score, as Warren led 14-7 at halftime.

Trinity’s offense exploded for 21 points in the third quarter, and while the defense gave up a 71-yard run and 3-yard score by Elliott, they put increasing pressure on Tate, including three sacks.

Elliott tied it a minute into the fourth with a 47-yard run, but McGuire came back with his fourth TD to put Trinity back in front.

After Trinity (2-0) was called for Illegal participation on a Warren Central punt, Elliott took the snap in the backfield and bolted 13 yards for to knot it up with 4:31 left.

With a 36-yard pass and 15-yard Warren Central flag, Trinity converted on 3rd-and-15 in its own territory, and McGuire’s fifth score made it 42-35.

Tate connected with Griffie for a 65-yard TD, but on the two-point run, Elliott was called down before the ball crossed the goal line, by the slimmest of margins.

“We scored some points but shot ourselves in the foot a few times with mistakes,†West said. “But, it’s game two and we have a long way to go.â€

Even with a brutal conference schedule, Friday was another example of Warren Central finding the toughest games it can get to fill out the slate.

“We’ll play anybody, anywhere in the allowed 300-mile window,†West said. "We'd play people outside that if we could."
