'What Carter Lost' documentary to debut this week

An ESPN 30-for-30 documentary, “What Carter Lost,†detailing the 1988 season of the Dallas Carter Cowboys will debut at the Texas Theatre on Aug. 16 and then air on ESPN on Aug. 24. at 8:30 pm CDT.

The 1988 Carter High team is well-known for beating the the Odessa Permian team immortalized in Friday Night Lights in the state semifinals en route to a state championship. After the state championship, six football players were later convicted as some of the 15 Carter teenagers who participated in a string of 21 robberies. Some of the players were sent to prison. Their title was later stripped after a long legal battle eventually ended with a determination that one of Carter's star players, Gary Edwards, had violated Texas' no-pass, no-play law.

You can see a trailer for the documentary here:  http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=20208934

Powerhouse Cal school dropping JV program
In Texas, football seems as popular as ever and high school programs still have huge participation. DeSoto, for example, has about 450 players in its football program for grades 9-12.

So this news, from California, will be shocking to some around here:
A powerhouse program has dropped its junior-varsity program because of a lack of participation. The program is Long Beach Poly, a program that has been successful for a long time. It's actually No. 10 in this year's MaxPreps national preseason rankings.

According to the story in the Long Beach Press-Telegram, Poly had 130 freshmen come out for the team six years ago, but this year, fewer than 40 tried out. It could be the trickle-up effect of how participation in tackle football by boys ages 6 to 12 has fallen by nearly 20 percent since 2009. It actually rose a smidge in 2015, however, by 1.23 percent, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. (Some youth football organizations in Texas have reported slight drops in participation in recent years).

According to the Press-Telegram story, an increasing number of teams across California are struggling to fill their rosters as football participation was down about 3 percent in 2016-17.

From the story: It's not surprising to see more teams shifting to one lower-level program, but it's certainly surprising to see it happen at Poly, a school that's won 19 CIF Southern Section championships and sent more than 60 players to the NFL, the most of any high school in the nation.

Give us a short report on Keontay Ingram, if you will. You'll be watching a future Horn.

I remember watching Earl Campbell at John Tyler back in the day. Then Billy Simms at Hooks and David Overstreet at Big Sandy. I'm glad I got to see them play. I could see how special they were even at the HS level.

I have a good story on Simms. Watched him during a playoff game once. He was something else. They all were. I saw people "act" like they were trying to tackle Earl Campbell. lol Lets just say high school football players don't act so well. lol

I was at this game.... didn't resemble the movie much... as you stated, wasn't the championship game, Carter won and it was in Austin, not the Astrodome.

I went to watch Jessie Armstead as he was the #1 player in the state and down to Texas or Miami..... Texas seemed to be the bridesmaid in alot of recruiting battles during those years.

Thanks for the memories!  If any of mine above are wrong, cut me some slack.... it was almost 30 years ago!

A $72 Million High School Stadium is About to Open in Texas

If you thought Texas high school football stadiums couldn’t get any more lavish or costly, just wait. Katy Independent School District (ISD), located just west of Houston, has a new $72 million sports facility that has broken the record set by McKinney ISD last year.

Officially named “Legacy Stadium,†the new facility supplants McKinney ISD’s $70 million 12,000 seat facility (which is still under construction) as Texas’s most expensive high school sports venue. This dubious honor was previously held by Eagle Stadium in Allen, Texas, which seats 18,000 and cost $60 million. The new stadium will host eight Houston area high school football teams when it opens.

The Katy ISD school board voted to approve “Legacy Stadium†as the name for the new $72 million facility. School officials agreed to name the field inside the stadium after longtime Katy High School coach Mike Johnston. Johnston coached at KHS for over 20 years and led the team to three state championships.

The name announcement came after the school district signed a 10-year sponsorship contract with Academy Sports & Outdoors, which will recoup just over two million dollars for the school district.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the sporting goods giant supplied Katy’s naming committee with a large binder full of possible names such as “Tradition Stadium†and “Katy Prairie Land Stadiumâ€.

Last year McKinney ISD made national headlines when word got out of plans to build a $70 million stadium. The project even caught the attention of the folks at Comedy Central’s Adult Swim, which reportedly referred to Texans as “asshats†for approving such a sum.

Katy ISD originally approved the plan in 2014.

“I don’t want to belabor the 2014 bond and where we are in the cost,†Superintendent Lance Hindt told the Chronicle. “I believe when the stadium opens, that all of that will be a distant memory because the community will rally around … the stadium. Legacy Stadium was something that was needed for our students and district.†Hindt wasn’t at Katy ISD three years ago when the costs were approved.

Rondale Moore begins his season this evening. I'll try to get updates or results as soon as I can. FYI

Texas commit Rondale Moore and his defending Kentucky class 6A champions are out to a solid lead in the 3rd. I have no stats but know Moore muffed a punt and was downed at his own 1 yd line. Trinity popped out of the jam on the next play though.

Louisville, KY Trinity 17

Carmel, Indiana 0

3rd Qtr

Moore breaks 69 yd touchdown run.

Trinity 24

Carmel 0

2:17 left in the 3rd

My hometown plays Arp in week 3 so I should get to see Overshown. We are a classification smaller than Arp ( 2a ) but we are pretty salty. Should be a good one.

Alto usually has a pretty good team

Give us a breakdown on Overshown, will ya?

Will do. I was actually debating and wether to go to that game or see Carthage @ Whitehouse and see Ingram.
BTW SHA, have you seen Altos non-district schedule? Winona ( 4 rounds in 3a last year ), Big Sandy ( 3 rounds in 2a ) Arp, Garrison ( always solid ), and 4a Rusk.
