when people like Charlie Strong or Art Briles ( that several national analysts have said would be great hires for Texas ) are your "fall back" options you are doing pretty good

I want this over as much as anyone, but its going to play out - and very well may go well into next week for sure even if Texas hears good news today or tomorrow...esp if Fisher is a legit guy

One thing for sure DizzG is that Mack is gone and we can start the re-build process. 2014 might be a hard year but, I honestly believe things will get better.

if... and its a BIG IF... Saban were to a accept....

earliest I could see the OFFICIAL "SABAN TO TEXAS" ANNOUNCEMENT is Sunday...

Acceptance today and team(s) / staff(s) notification would probably have to happen 1st

Here is Scipio on that same idea --

Be open to surprises. Be willing to take in new evidence. Pete Carroll was a 5th choice joke of a hire for USC...until he wasn't.

Bill Belichick was the bum who got fired in Cleveland that New England fans mocked after his first year.

Nick Saban was a sub .600 coach at Michigan State sure to fail in SEC culture.

DKR was 17-13 in 3 years at Mississippi State and Washington before he came to Texas.

We can see their greatness in retrospect, but at the time, no one was standing on a soap box loudly guaranteeing their entry into the Coaching Hall of Fame.

he's one of the few voices of reason right now. Everyone wants the "name" and Im caught up in that too but to automatically declare failure because its not one of 1-2 guys is crazy

The problem is that, if Chip's report is correct, they are not "fall back" options. It would seem that Patterson is making them number 1 options over guys like Fisher.

But that's if Chips report is correct.

impossible to know at this point I guess as other websites have different orders/lists than Chip Brown

I get the feeling the Texas hire will be no one that has been leaked out for interviews so far. Just my gut

I also think Texas will make the announcement at the maximum media point to get the attention.

Look at how the Mack announcement leaked out - it hit the news cycle right before all eyes were on the Heisman presentation

I could see Texas dropping something right before the national title game if its not Fisher

Regardless, these are very exciting times and you're right that rumors will be all over the place until its officially announced.

I agree with the sentiments that we need the match between the new HC and UT football to be a good one. As Scipio points out, this doesn't have to be the prettiest selection as long as it is a good match. What does that look like? Go find Bevo11's "search criteria" post. He also put it on BOFZ. I've hoped for Saban, but only if he can adapt his D to spread offenses (at that can only be seen in the future). I've liked Briles because of his Texas connections (plus, my step-kids are from Stephenville), but only if he can produce a better defense (also only can be seen in the future). I didn't like the selection of Mack at first. I too was "shocked" and "pissed." But he later gained us a MNC and then later took us to the tank again. Right now I am hoping for Fisher.

I've been saying this about the timing as well. I hope we start to hear from insiders before then. Either way I'm strapped in for the ride.

The one plus for Strong is he is a defensive coach. It is easier to find a good young inventive OC than a young DC.

The longer it goes on, the more likely it will be after the MNC game on Monday, thus increasing the odds of Fisher.

All in all, we just don't know.

And its possible Saban says yes, and its possible a guy like Mora, blows away Patterson in the interview.

Just complete chaos and unknown at this point.

Your first instincts about Mack were exactly right. He is a great self promoter and a terrible football coach. His only MNC was won by VY in spite of Mack, not because of him. Are you really saying that you would hire Mack again if you knew there would inly be one MNC and two conference championships in the next 16 years while OU was winning one MNC an 8 conference championships while delivering 4 epic beat downs of UT???? If your answer is yes, you have been in the MBTF spin cycle wayyy too long. The last thing UT needs is another Mack Brown type hire.

This makes a lot of sense. Don't be surprised if it plays out similar to how the AD search did. Everyone starts to zero in on the likely candidate, i.e. Luck, and then Patterson gets announced as the new AD. And that's after he said he wasn't interested. As DizzG says, it very well could be someone whose name hasn't leaked out or who hasn't seemed to be a serious candidate.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I've liked Briles because of his Texas connections ,,,,,,,,,,,,
This is something that gets much mention from many different posters, not just you. On the surface, it makes some sense.

Nonetheless, those connections did not help Briles land Tony Brown either. Or even get Briles in the ballpark with Brown. (Rivals shows he had zero interest in Briles).

Or Jamal Adams (called a "special talent"). Or Demetrius Knox.

Same with A'Shawn Robinson and Derrick Griffin last year.

Thus, while it is true Briles' recruiting has picked up since RGIII, he is not close to dominating the state.

The sensationalist in us all tend to focus on the big names whether it is the best fit for us or not.
