...but his buyout is $0 instea of $2 million. His annual contract is worth $4.1 million.

He can be had.

only 4.1 a year with no buyout? wow FSU is stupid. Thats basically just Fisher putting his name down just to lock something in but keeping his options open

If Texas offers him 6-7 million is he really going to leave a couple of million on the table and it cost Texas nothing to hire him?

This is not earth shattering news. What would one expect under the present circumstances? With a MNC game in the balance, it would be suicidal to delay signing an extension that is on the table since his team would be aware of such a delay. A delay in signing an extension at this time would potentially derail and negatively effect the psyche of his team.

I don't get it though.

Why even bother signing it at all if he's not planning on being back at fsu?

You sign it because it gives you a raise to $4.1 million. There's no guarantee that you are getting the Texas job. Take the money now and if Texas calls you take it. If not you are set where you're at. It's good business.

It could be that he's been told Saban is 1 you are option 3. He signs it because it makes sense to do so. If things fall his way he gets a huge pay raise.

A zero buyout is something you do when you think there is no chance of your coach leaving.
Or it could be that the coach demanded it in his contract.

Didn't fisher have a $2m buyout in the old contract? Edit: did the extension change the buyout terms?

I think of it as him locking something in at his max leverage point, but doing so in a manner that keeps options open to him should something be offered like a top 2 job

if the Texas job fills up in the next few days and its not him he loses all his leverage. He's also about to play for a MNC...what if FSU loses and Texas hires Saban or someone else? what leverage does he really have then?

Valid point. But hasn't that extension been on the table for a while--meaning before his name was linked to the Texas job?

So why sign it now unless this was coming at the tail end of a long negotiation process to get it just right?

Don't get me wrong buyouts are made to be broken and I get that contracts mean nothing but the timing of this in relation to the open horn job makes me think that this was his way of saying "thanks but I'm happy here"

Had he signed the extension weeks ago prior to being really mentioned as a candidate for the job (like mora or briles did) then I could buy that he was still involved as a candidate.

The timing is curious to me.

Or it could just mean he is happy at FSU and wants to remain there?

Or UT already has their HC and he his agent has been informed?

Guess we will all find out soon enough.

Good point Dizz and no state income tax in Texas either. Correct me if I'm wrong, which is often, but doesn't Florida have a state income tax?
