As many of have known Swoopes is a nice guy but just not a D1 QB    Bring on Buechele

Shane Buechele

Rivals.com
It’s finally time to admit it for good right? Tyrone Swoopes, who had one of the most dynamic junior films as a running quarterback I’ve seen in all my years of scouting high school football, is not a quarterback. Swoopes, who started off as a five-star on Rivals and came very, very close to finishing as a three-star (the dual-threat QB behind him in 2013, Johnny Stanton, was a three-star) is clearly not the solution at Texas. Longhorns fans can be heard screaming “Thanks Captain Obvious†and likely more graphic things at their screens when reading this, but the spring game has to be his swan song. WithJerrod Heard earning second team reps behind Swoopes before going down with a shoulder injury, Longhorns fans had to be terrified that Swoopes was going to be their starter next year.

But then the spring game happened and Texas fans, amongst the most rabid in the country, have new hope. Swoopes went 4-for-16 passing with two picks while true freshman Shane Buechele, who should be prepping for the prom right now if he were not an early enrollee, went 22-for-41 for 299 yards and two scores in an impressive performance.

So here’s my advice to Charlie Strong. Barring injury, Swoopes should never see the field again under center and you roll with the punches of starting a true freshman in Buechele. Since Swoopes was clearly outplayed by someone just learning to adjust to college, it’s time to move on. Strong may be coaching for his job this upcoming season depending on how things go, so it’s risky to start a true freshman, but honestly don’t Texas fans deserve better? It’s time for the Swoopes era to end in Austin.

I'm a huge fan of Heard but as I stated in a different thread, he may have picked a bad time to get hurt. Buechele was impressive and with more practice behind him will get even better.

Heard can make things happen with his legs, but like the conversation is going with Swoopes, Boo already looks like a more competent and effective passer than Heard. That said, Boo looked tiny out there, and Charlie needs to explain to Heard that injuries can happen at any time, so he better be ready.

There must be a reason that Boo got the vast majority of snaps. It seems obvious that he won the job publicly at the

O/W game. I think Swoopes is terrific in the 18 wheeler package, but other than that, no thanks.

Based on what I saw Saturday, there isn't a QB competition anymore. Shane is the best QB on campus, bar none.

I would agree. I also have become convinced that the only way Heard will ever be our QB again is when the players in front of him on the depth chart get hurt. It won't be because he's beaten someone out in practice. Thats just not in his DNA.

Best case scenario would be for Heard to step up and take the job so Buechele would have time to develope physically but I don't see that happening. Buechele looks like the real deal but I don't see him making it through 12 games without getting hurt. He needs time to put on some weight and strength.

But if he is the best we have you have to roll with him.

Shane needs to room with Pat Moore till August.

I think Gilbert needs to know by end of August what each QB does best and adjust play calling to those strengths because odds are all 3 will need to play at least some. with Heard that would be spreading the field and let him run read option with the passing game mainly being deep shots down field and using jet sweep flip passes . Buechele opens up the entire offense just needs to complete higher percentage which will come with playing time and I would remove many of the QB run game calls with Shane just let Foreman and Warren destroy the defense eagerness to tackle.

Yep. Everything I had seen before Heards injury had him trailing Swoopes in the race so unless some small miracle occurs, I don't see Heard being much of a viable option any longer, which sucks because I really thought he'd be the answer.

The comment that Boo made to Mayden says it all. He is dedicated to perfection, and will work to attain it. Determination. Perspiration. Preparation. I think the fact that Boo seems to 'feel' the blindside rush may go a long way in keeping him healthy. That, and his incredibly quick release. My gosh, he gets the ball out of his hand, and fast.

If anyone has an extra Notre Dame or OU ticket, please just tell me how much and I'll send a check. My kids let theirs go because their work schedules kept them from attending all but 3 games last year. Darn it!

Hook 'em!

I feel the same way as you, but I truly feel Heard would have also played better than Swoopes in the Scrimmage. Swoopes set the bar pretty damn low with his performance.

It may be that Heard is far more effective as a back up who is a late game option. Teams would game plan for Buechele, which would open things up for Heard in small spurts.

It seemed Heard came out like gangbusters last year. A few games later, teams were figuring him out and frustrated him. Take that out of the way, maybe Heard is a bigger weapon than otherwise.
