Guess I'm out as well. Thought this site would be different. Disappointing.
I am really sorry to see you go. And I am sorry that you are disappointed. I am not sure why you should expect people to work for nothing. I was not a part of setting up this web site, and I get nothing from them other than to get to pay my five dollars and a place to rest my weary posting head where over time I can hopefully be a part of building a Longhorn community where I can get some good information and spend a little time among like minded people. It is obvious that this site is only just beginning and I think we can expect that things will only get better over time. To take that next step, you have to generate some income. Free don't pay no bills and neither does it pay for any effort to create mo betta features ... maybe, the folks who are putting themselves on the line to make a go of this should become monks and monkettes and sell hair shirts, start a convent and a monastery.
Seriously, I would like to not have to pay for good content and good discussion, but take a look around at the free forums. There are the free, come one come all forums, like Hornfans and ShaggyBevo. Both of these forums have general interactive discussion but effectively no quality content is created for them. Hornfans is dead most of the time and discussion is generated there usually only when something big is happening. There is a place for Hornfans and I am glad it is there. I drop by periodically to listen to the moss grow. Actually, I pop in at least once a day in hopes of some worthwhile discussion being generated. Doesn't happen too much. Shaggy is similar except that it is based on irreverence and smartassitudinousness. My major interest is issues related to UT basketball, basketball recruiting, football, football recruiting, and general tomfoolery in that order. It is worth dropping by Shaggy to listen to Derka Derka take on the world regarding Longhorn hoops and hoopers.
Then there are the blog type forums like Barking Carnival and Burnt orange Nation. these web sites provide well written blog style articles that are usually very well written, entertaining and sometimes informative. With most of the sites like these two, their free presentation means that content is rather slow in coming and is rather spotty although it can be rather entertaining at times. One thing that these blog type forums seem to lack for me is an avenue for general discussion where you can hang out, read a little, comment a little, and generally fell like you are part of a community.
Of course, there are the sites like Bleacher Report that compile articles and sites of the news outlets that provide content, but these are lacking in any sense of community that I can see. If you want free, go spend some time hanging out at Hornfans. As much as I appreciate what they try to do, spending much time there waiting for something to happen, is a lot like watching paint dry - that is what you get when you want free. If I am missing types of or specific free Longhorn web sites, please let me know.
I can't speak for Hornsports, but it seems to me that they are trying to strike a balance of providing good content and a comfortable place where those of us who are in not too big of a hurry can feel like we have a place where we can share a little of the Longhorn community that, quite frankly, is rather hard to find in our everyday lives sometimes - a place where we can find out what is going on and maybe share a little of what we may have found in our constant search for all things Longhorn, without having to feel the compulsion to perform like a Barking Carnival blogger. I think Hornsports is in its' infancy of trying to provide us with this kind of Longhorn Home Base. I do not think it is an easy thing to put together. It takes a lot of time and a lot effort. Five bucks a month is not much to ask to help put it together. I don't want to have to pay for anything either, but I kind of like the idea of being a part of something a little bit bigger than myself, someplace where I can go even if just for a little while each day, where I feel welcome ... so far so good, guys.
