Euthanized - The loss to Butler

On your takeaway you questioned whether the team playing like individuals or a cohesive unit was the fault of the players or Barnes.  IMO, this is not an either or, it is entirely Barnes fault.

When players want to be individuals, you bench them until they get the message.

But, actually, what happened to Barnes is what always happens to him.  Somewhere, early in the season, he lost his team.  By that, I mean he lost the respect of his players.

But I'll give him credit for recruiting very well.

Yet, as Myles Turner saw reduced minutes, fans cried that Barnes needed to play him more. It goes both ways.

It's not nearly as black & white as you make it out, IMO. If it was a simple as "Barnes lost the team" then why didn't the players play for themselves? Absolving the roster's guilt in the season's outcome is short-sighted.

Again, I'm not saying that Barnes is guilt-free - not by a longshot.

i don't think anybody would argue he didn't get the most out of this group but the 'he lost the team' narrative is said a lot on message boards. it's kinda like 'patterson knows basketball' and everybody just seems to accept it as fact. is it really and how would you or anybody know?

I compare Barnes to Will Muschamp when he coached at Florida. Both have been good recruiters. Both are great defensive coaches. However, they are both poor offensive coaches which sooner or later can get you fired. Just ask Buddy Ryan.

Yep, fans that wanted Turner to get more minutes weren't watching the games. Turner was a mess offensively for about the final month and had a ton of defensive breakdowns too. I had no problem with Barnes giving Turner less minutes.

Barnes deserves some blame as do the players.

The biggest problem this year is we had absolutely no identity. That falls on the coaches and players. The coaches needed to develop an identity and the players need to step up and embrace an identity.

Didn't Turner get FOY for the Big XII just a couple of weeks ago? Does anyone wonder why he seemed to play scared lately? Look, I have met Barnes, he is a great person and it's really hard not to like him. However the old saying "The buck stops here" is true. This is on him.
