Happy New Year! As I eagerly await the start of the Sugar Bowl, I can't help but think how much the current College Football Bowl format sucks. During the regular season, we watch teams battle it out week after week, and every game is a meaningful game. Then, 4 teams get chosen for the only 3 games that matter, and usually 1-3 complain about how they were unfairly left out. Then, 74 teams play 37 meaningless games over the course of a month. In case you missed it (like me), this year's offering included prestigious titles such as Cure, Camellia, Gasparilla, Famous Idaho Potato, Dollar General, Cheez-It, and Redbox. There was an Armed Forces Bowl, a Military Bowl, and the start of the First Responder Bowl before it mercifully got cancelled. Noble professions all, but while we're using career choices for bowl names, how about the Doctor Bowl, or better yet, the Urologist Bowl? There were 3 bowls in Orlando, and even one in Frisco- who knew? Most of the NFL-caliber players know better and sit them out- why risk injury and your career (ie, Jake Butt) to play in a game that nobody really cares about?

To help fix the college football post-season, I propose the following solution. There should be an 8 team playoff, with all 4 games on New Year's Day, one after the other, featuring bowls that have traditionally been played on New Years Day. Since games usually last 3.5 hours, we have to start early and follow the sun. The schedule (all times CST): 9:00 Orange Bowl, 12:30 Sugar Bowl, 4:00 Fiesta Bowl, 7:30 Rose Bowl, which should wrap up 14 hours of meaningful college football at 11 PM! The Final 4 will be approximately one week later, which will be the Cotton and Peach Bowls (or alternatively, swap the Peach for the Orange, and the Cotton for the Sugar). The national championship will be one week after that at a rotating site. Personally, I would vote to have it be at the Rose Bowl every year, but I needed them for the 7:30 quarterfinal slot because of the paucity of quality bowl games on the West Coast. Sorry, but the Holiday Bowl isn't worthy- it hasn't been good since Major Applewhite played it in 2001!

As for the other bowl games, I might keep 4 as a consolation for teams 9-16. Besides the Holiday, the best of the rest appear to be the Florida Citrus, the Gator, and the Alamo. Some would argue for the Texas, the Music City, or the Outback, but they're just newer bowls played in NFL stadiums. Traditionalists might also push for the Independence, the Liberty, or the Sun, but conversely they are non-prestigious bowls played in smaller cities with older stadiums. However, if you insist, because they are cool destinations, go ahead and throw in the Vegas and the Hawaii, for a total of 12 consolation bowls for teams ranked 9-32. But that's it- no one cares about the other bowls!

I know, I spend way too much time thinking about stuff like this, but glad to get that off my chest. I also have strong thoughts about conference realignment, but that post will have to wait until another day. Hook em, Horns!
