Directors Cup Thread

Women's golf started the season ranked 16th and just wrapped up their first tournament with a 2nd place finish. #3 Wake Forest won the tournament but Texas bested 7 other schools ranked in the top 20.

NCAA play is a long ways off but a nice way to start the season.

Texas went on to sweep Stanford. 4 high quality wins to start the season. The level of competition drops with 4 easy non-conference home matches before Big 12 play starts. Baylor and Kansas are the only other Big12 teams in the top 25...so don't look for Texas to be challenged much this season.
Volleyball beat up on 4 cupcakes prior to starting Big 12 play against a Kansas team that just dropped out of the top 25 rankings. Kansas took the first 2 sets in Lawrence 23-25 but Texas battled back and dominated the last 3 sets to secure the victory and remain undefeated.

#25 women's soccer played #12 TCU to a 1-1 tie in Fort Worth. The teams only loss on the year was to #1 UNC 2-0. They are 6-1-3. This has the makings of the strongest soccer team in sometime and they will look to win the first NCAA tournament game in 5 years. Tieing the best team in the conference to open conference play helps in the big 12 regular season championship run.

Here is some welcome non-football related news:

Men's cross country finished 12th at the Cowboy Jamboree. 12th may not sound all that impressive but this is a loaded CC meet with 10 of the top 12 teams in the nation competing. Texas did best some teams ranked in the teens. I'd look for this Texas team to finish similar to last year when NCAAs roll around, just outside of the top 10.

Our women's CC team just isn't that strong across the board. We have one strong runner, Beth Ramos, and I wouldn't be surprised if she makes NCAA as an individual while the team fails to qualify. Her presence at NCAA would at least secure us some points for the Directors cup.

Women's volleyball swept OU in dominant fashion to go to 2-0 on the year in Big 12 play.

#25 W soccer is up 1-0 in Lubbock at they attempt to avenge the football team's loss.

Women's golf is up to a #5 ranking after back to back 2nd place tournament finishes.

Men's cross country is up to #18 in the rankings. At this point last year, they were ranked number 24 before climbing up in to the low teens by mid-October.

I continue to suspect that the women's team won't qualify 5 runners for the NCAAs and Beth Ramos will carry the torch alone.

This is a program that overall needs a lift to start competing nationally like CDC expects. They did make a coaching hire just at the beginning of the semester which seemed odd- not sure what the story for the late hire was.

With a win over Baylor, Texas is tied for 1st in the conference 1/3 of the way through the season.

In less surprising news, volleyball stays undefeated on the season and in 1st place in the big 12.

Head coach?  Was it a good hire or did it seem like a scramble?
Seems like a very good hire actually based on reading his bio. I should clarify he is the men cross country coach and will also work with the distance runners for the track team. He has a counterpart with the women's team.

He was hired from Washington, where it appears he had built very successful, top 10 men's and women's teams in his 20 years serving in that role.

I have no explanation for the timing of the hire but it does not seem like it was a scramble, seems like we got one of the best in the business.

Volleyball continues to dominate the competition, now 13-0, winning 39 sets while only losing 5 sets all year. They have a big match up against #18 Baylor who sits in 2nd place in the league.

Women's Soccer wins 2-1 on the road against West Virginia today. They are now 5-0-1 in the conference and have not lost a conference game dating all the way back to last conference season. They are in 1st place in the big 12 with a 2 point edge over TCU with 3 games remaining. Oh, and they have been doing all of this without Lexi Missimo who is one of their top 2 players.

Recently learned their best player is Erling Haaland’s cousin!

That guy is a beast! Not a fan of City, but he is a special talent. Love Premier League mornings as I get ready for our football later in the day!
Same! Especially since my 2 toddlers think 6:30 is the ideal wake up time!

I assume that's Lexi Missimo? I couldn't find that connection to Erling via google, but it did bring up a lot of articles about her being one of the best young soccer talents in the world. Glad to have her on our squad.

Same... As a Liverpool fan I hate that he signed with them, but hope she scores as much as her cousin.

Sorry. Sarcastic comment that didn’t come through well. But yes. Just saying Lexi plays like him.

No worries, I didn't take your comment in any negative way, I was just trying to figure out who Erling was connected to.

Texas soccer earned a tie on the road against Iowa State while TCU took a surprising loss against OU.

This puts Texas in the catbird seat to end the Big 12 regular season. With only 2 games remaining, a win and a tie would clinch the regular season crown. With even more opportunities to seal the championship based on outcomes of TCU and Techs upcoming games (including TCU vs Tech next Thursday).

Volleyball dropped their first match on the year to Iowa State.

Actually, Texas would hold the tiebreak over Tech (head to head win) and TCU (goal differential (most likely as Texas has a healthy margin right now)) so even with just 3 points from a win they could end in a tie based on points but get the #1 seed.

I'd prefer them to win it outright of course but 1 win out of the next 2 and it'll be a done deal.
