Obviously most UT grads don't stay in Austin and I'm making some leaps to make a point - but for those who'd like to move the alumni into the nose bleeds and flood the area surrounding the field with current students, I think you need to consider the following:
-UT graduates enough students every decade to more than fill DKR (even if nobody brings a friend)
-If all UT grads kept attending games after graduation, there would be a half million alumni fighting for at least a couple tickets apiece
-The alumni that keep their tickets are a very small percentage of overall alumni - the most dedicated and loyal fans who come in good times and in bad
-Many current students will never attend another game after they graduate
-Current students bring a good atmosphere but often attend games because it's convenient, fun and relatively cheap
-Because current students may be looking for a party as much as a football game and have little invested, they may not stay if the Horns are losing or show up at all if the opponent isn't interesting
-A few of these current fans will become the lifelong donors and ticketholders
I'm not going to sing the circle of life, but both groups need to be accomodated. Otherwise you'll either end up with students that never fully ignite their passion for Longhorn football, or alumni that don't continue attending games after graduation.
We defintely need a way to get our most passionate student fans close to the field, but I don't think that means flooding in all 50k of them. We need a way to separate the wheat from the chaff and I'm open to the suggested points systems or anything else that tracks and rewards loyalty. If you attend every home basketball game and football game you deserve a decent seat. If you also attend the spring game and travel to away games we want you in the very front. If you'd rather tailgate than show up for the first quarter, we'll give your seat to someone that wants to use it. As for the alumni, they may not be as exuberant (time wears down the best of us), but if you graduated decades ago and still have tickets you've got nothing left to prove.
