Did we reject Saban?

Look this is all fodder for fun. But consider this scenario.

We all know that Patterson did in fact always like Strong. So did the committee.

We have all come to believe Saban was sitting on our offer.

WHen the Miami job came open, Strong ws going to be seriously considered.

Maybe Patterson put the heat on Saban. He might have said make a decision or we are jumping on our other top choice.

Saban may not have rejected but just said I am not being rushed into a decision this huge.

That is when Patterson pulled the trigger.

What if Saban is sitting there today going, "What the hell just happened?"

I met Steve years ago and He is and will Do Good Things @ Texas. Give the man some time.

What if Saban just told us No and what would we have done or the others who might have wanted it but didn't want to interview or what ever reason. Me and You don't know what goes on behind closed doors.

Please, don't take this as a shot at you. I just know Steve and he will do good.

Patterson stepped into an impossible situation. Had to get rid of a "legend" that went out screaming and thrown into the fire having to find a new coach after 15 years.

Strong may be a great hire or he may stink it up, but we will not know for a few years. What is important to remember is that would have been true of any hire. Just because a coach was great at one place does not even remotely guarantee success at another.

Here is a thought...maybe Nick Saben was NEVER EVER COMING, perhaps he had some interest, but that does not mean he is coming. You can go to a bar see a beautiful lady and have interest, that doesn't mean you're going to leave your wife and turn your back on your kids, even if she throws it at you..

I am starting to form the opinion that this was part of a "power play" by Powers and Patterson.

Powers thinks the BMDs have long had too much influence over and access to the athletic department. Indeed, some of these types went so far as to threaten to even can him. You can bet he does not care for that type of external power existing -- he is the president after all. So, he hired Patterson only once he was certain Patterson agreed with him on this point, and only after Patterson agreed to work with him to reverse this situation and take back control of the entire athletic department.

A big part of this their strategy was this first key hire -- the new football coach. With it, they set out to was to reassert that control and show all of them that the actual athletic director, working in conjunction with the school president, is the boss of the athletic department and not a puppet of rich donors.

I suspect that, after a full financial review, they determined that the athletic budget is no longer dependent upon those folks. That it can now stand on its own merits, and generate sufficient revenues to withstand any defections of BMD donations their actions might cause.

If this is so, then it is a risky strategy. And one that is off to very wobbly start. And, if so, I fear this is not the end of this story, only the beginning.

And I do not like the implications at all. I just want my teams to win or at least be in the mix, with our reputation intact. I do not care for all the backroom drama over ego, power and money. But, I am not sure we can avoid this now.

From my perspective as of this morning, I see a long bumpy ride ahead.

I don't think Saban ever had an offer nor were we considering him. I think all the people in the know took Saban for his word. He's 62 and looks happy in tuscaloosa (don't know why) and will retire there.if he was 52 I think he'd be a longhorn next season.
