Did Mack Brown try to sabotage Texas?

If anyone saw this interview on channel 13 in Houston PLEASE weigh in, but its being broken by posters on OB, per current UT "commit" John Bonney, that Mack Brown told all of the committed players to look elsewhere while at the banquet.
If so, thats a s*** move, and one which could (you would think) give UT some leverage to negate his buyout or stop paying him since he does have a financial relationship with the school.
Whisenant during the last few weeks MB said and did some stuff that he should have not done. I think MB knew he was at the end of his coaching career at The University Of Texas. Men will say do just about just anything to keep the job they really love. There is a hand full of people who really knows what went down with MB. I sure don't and I am not going to act like I know. But if he did just half of what we heard he did. I feel that at some point down the road MB will regret saying some of the things he said. Lets face it MB knew it was time to go he didn't even meet the standers he set for himself that he needed to do to keep his job. The Texas Longhorns fans could have given MB a great going away party now I don't think that will happen.

As for me it's over and I am fully behind CS and ready to see what new heights he and his coaching staff will take Texas. My friends y'all have a great weekend.

I feel you I suggested maybe aggie paying and the majority got heated saying i was acting aggie for having an opinion. All the attorneys on the board please advise what happened to freedom of speech, hell freedom of opinion?

LOL.

This is not personal but -- the First Amendment restricts the Govt from abridging free speech, not your fellow internet sports forum posters.

Further, a good argument can be made that they too were only exercising their right of free speech.

Again, nothing personal.

Indefensible

You tell the young men you committed this great university and Texas will get an outstanding coach to come in after I am gone. At the worst the players should have taken a wait and see approach.

What Mack did is what an angry, petty and ego centered person would do as he exits in a scorned fashion.

I feel terrible for Coach Strong and he walked into a dumpster fire of a situation. He is recruiting his butt off doing everything he can to keep this class together and the old coach tells the kids to look around. Mack dang well knew the incoming staff wouldn't have had time to replace the departed if a mass exodus took place.

Someone that "loves" Texas and is still getting paid by them shouldn't have done this.

I'm not surprised by what he did. Someone that cared so much about his public appearance and controlling the message told me plenty.

No offense but grow the F up. . .
You may not like a poster making a remark. ..but it does not give you the right to insult them for having the audacity of taking a different position then yours or offering their own opinion. . . .some of us are intelligent enough to recognize both the pros and cons of people . ..

And I'll point out. . .the story has already been both misquoted and taken out of context. . ..nor has it been confirmed by another recruit yet.. . . .

It is ironic that in your next post. ..you whine about someone making an attack on Mack "being called a name". . .yet you. . .a staff member has no problem calling others names.. . .

Leave the shaggy bevo nonsense to the cess pool. . .
This ^ Not hating on Mack makes one a "Mack-o-phile".

"Dont say that. Could get you called a name...."

Sigh...

Even if he did it subtly like some of you suggested he did still makes it wrong. Its a soft sell approach. You plant a seed and see if it grows.Mack planted a negative thought about Texas in these recruits brain when their is the most doubt. The coaches they knew were leaving. No one knew who was gonna become the next head coach and the recruits didn't know if they would fit into the new HC plans. They have other coaches knocking on the door offering comfort and security to these kids and the man who recruited them here subtly tells them that they need to look around while he is making millions from Texas. He knew what he was doing and it was wrong.

on a side note JimR probably knows more about Mack than most and he said he is petty and egotistical

One of the more rational posts, IMO of course...

The classy thing for him to do would have been to say to the recruits something like --

"We don't know who the new coach is going to be yet but we will soon. So, before you do anything else, why don't you wait to see who it is and then speak to him first, face-to-face, before making any decisions or doing anything else. Remember that you committed to a great school not to me."

Didn't see it and clearly need corroboration. If true, he's a complete $#@!.
The reason I think it could be false is that it seems that his mindset at the banquet was that he was going to somehow strong arm Powers and/or Patterson and keep his job.
Mack Brown did not say this at the Friday Banquet, but Saturday when he had the team and commits over to his house for breakfast and visit after Steve Patterson told Mack he had to retire today (Saturday)

Someone mentioned this on the 247 Board.

http://texassports.com/news/2013/12/15/FB_1215135549.aspx?path=football

"Yesterday was tough telling the staff, the recruits, our players and the wives that we will no longer be here. That is a very difficult thing. We actually went to the recruiting dinner last night and tried to make sure that the recruits understand what is going on and that we encourage them to come to Texas because it is a wonderful place, the best university in the country, and we would want them to come here and pull for them and for them to hang in here because Steve is going to hire a tremendous coach. He will have choices of the best coaches in the country and it is a fresh start for them. So the negativity that has been around the program will be cleared with the new guy and that is a great time for them."

"So, I need to sit down with the players tomorrow and if they're still looking at the NFL, we've got Arthur Johnson and the staff that will still be working with them daily, but I'm going to be working with them through Oregon and then I'll be in town so I'll be able to help them any way I can. If some of them want to transfer, we need to talk to them about that. I would encourage them to wait and see who the new coach is and go through spring practice. I told them yesterday that they should not be mad at this university. They chose it, they came, it's a wonderful place and I made the choice so let's move forward. It's important to beat Oregon and move on from there."

"I was sitting there Friday night at the Banquet and then I met with families on Saturday morning. Sitting there, talking to families about coaching their children, their students, for the next four years and not being able to in my mind honestly tell them I would be able to do that for the next four years really threw me. I felt like, you know what, these people need a commitment for four years, I can't give them that. I just can't do that. That bothered me and I told them that last night. I said, 'A big part of my part of this decision was that I can't promise you four years. I just can't. Everybody says if you win them all next year, win 12, win 10, its fine, but I can't promise that. The ball bounces funny.'"

That may have been EXACTLY what he told the recruits. As long as everyone is speculating, here's what could have happened:

Bonney was talking to another recruit who had doubts because of everything they had heard. The 2 of them approached Mack and said they weren't sure about their future. Mack took them aside and went on his soapbox for 10 minutes extolling the virtues of the University of Texas.

Then he ended with, "But if you're not 100& sure, MAYBE you should take another visit to see for yourself that Texas has the best of everything." Maybe Mack knows the kid better than we do and realized he's one of those kids that has to see it for himself.

This spin also fits all the "facts" but is just a positive way to look at it. Funny thing is, Bonney is still committed to the good guys and may very well end up in Burnt Orange. He just had to dispel his doubts the only way he knew how.

Mack? is that you?

per TOP STARR Mack Brown did not say this at the Friday Banquet, but Saturday when he had the team and commits over to his house for breakfast a

nd visit after Steve Patterson told Mack he had to retire today (Saturday .....You have an angry old man throwing a final fit and showing his true colors trying to harm the UT program....MB is gone....so we don't need anymore MB haters or MB lovers...............glad he is gone..

Focus on what you can change and drop the rest….MAck is gone, Saban is gone, Aggies are gone…. it is all water under the bridge. MOVE ON THE FUTURE IS NOW!

Before I let it go I want to clarify so that we all know where we stand.

I never liked MB. 0%.

His type of person and the crap he was constantly selling, I saw through it from Day 1.

My entire family are UT graduates and we get together the week after Christmas to visit.

Inevitably it turns to Texas football.

I have told every cousin and uncle for as long as MB has been around that he is phony.

The clapping. The sincerity. He is no leader of men.

They always viewed me as a hater.

I viewed him as not ready for prime time.

All my cousins, one by one, apologized to me this year for calling me a hater.

I don't need a story from a recruit to tell me this guy doesn't compute.

My love for Texas is what lets me know.

MB is not Texas.

Darrell Royal is the best coach Texas ever had.

I am hoping to be able to say that Coach Strong is the best coach Texas ever had when he hangs it up.

MB will be just another name in the history book when it is all said and done.

I don't care if the story bolsters what I already know because I already know it.

The video doesnt say anything about after he was fired. He was still an employee and head coach at the banquet, and told a committed player (and allegedly players) to go look elsewhere.
I dont care how much some people love Mack, or how much they have this insane view of him being an infallible human being, the fact is it should have NEVER been said by a guy who, regardless of what day, was and is on the payroll of the University of Texas.

Some of you REALLY need to pay attention when you are told by people who should know that Mack Brown was NOT all sunshine and rainbows.

He derailed Nick Saban by most accounts....and you think hed have any problem derailing a kids commitment?
Bullshit. Saban wasn't coming. I've said it multiple times and the minions just kept falling for the "insider" bullshit.

Mack never told anyone to go look around. What he said was to wait until the new staff is in place and then if you want to look around that he would help them.

Now, I would like an explanation of this next comment you made. Are you referring to the "insiders" who took this site by storm with all their " connections" only to be proven completely and totally wrong about pretty much everything.

Seriously? Because of Christmas get-togethers and your gut feel?

Are you saying MB was all sunshine and rainbows?
Not at all. I'm just smart enough to think and figure things out for myself without having to be lead on by people that know people that know people.
