Did Mack Brown try to sabotage Texas?

If anyone saw this interview on channel 13 in Houston PLEASE weigh in, but its being broken by posters on OB, per current UT "commit" John Bonney, that Mack Brown told all of the committed players to look elsewhere while at the banquet.

If so, thats a s*** move, and one which could (you would think) give UT some leverage to negate his buyout or stop paying him since he does have a financial relationship with the school.

Didn't see it and clearly need corroboration. If true, he's a complete dick.

The reason I think it could be false is that it seems that his mindset at the banquet was that he was going to somehow strong arm Powers and/or Patterson and keep his job.

Interesting to say the least. I would have to hear from more UT commits saying the same thing before putting too much stock into it. To be honest, I would be somewhat heartbroken. I respect the man for many reasons, but if something like this ended up being true, all that respect would be gone. No future statue, no more of that weird Mack and Sally Brown day in Austin, and no more defending the guy whatsoever.

Would love to hear more about this story, hope its not true.

It was disappointing that he was taking visits (avoiding being in Austin) when Patterson wanted him in Austin to discuss him "resigning."

It could also be that Bonney is trying to "save face" with UT fans/teammates in shopping around while committed.

My impression from the video is that the kid meant that Mack told them, "Explore all of your options and when Texas has a staff then make sure that Texas is still the right fit."

Now...should he have done that? If he's only representing the interest of Texas Athletics? Hell no. But it's Mack Brown and we all know he's going to make sure the "kids" are taken care of.

It didn't have anything to do with banquet. Mack met with Bonney when Mack resigned and Mack told Bonney that he needed to look around and do what was best for him. He did NOT tell Bonney to go find another school. I'm always amazed at how the haters manage to manipulate the truth. Obviously we do not have the benefit of hearing the entire conversation between Mack and Bonney, but I'd bet you a lot of money that Bonney is still a big Mack Brown fan and appreciates the honest advice that Mack gave him.

I basically got called the biggest dumb a** for asking this question a few weeks back, and was told Mack oozed class...either way he's gone so..meh..I guess..

Some people, w/o any real evidence, continue to believe the worst about Mack.

Time to move on.

As far as I'm concerned Mack Brown's job since he's still getting paid by Texas and handsomely, is to tell the recruits to hold on till the new coach is hired. After that if you have any concerns you can always take visits. Total B.S.

I remember after the 2010 disaster, Major Applewhite was credited with keeping the class together after Mack had to replace practically his whole staff. I would guess Mack didn't tell his recruits to go on visits while he was replacing his coaches.

I hope Mr. Brown is coaching in 2015 like Bohls says he will, so I can root against him.

El Machio says there is some story behind this that makes Mack look pretty bad. At least it supports what Bonney said.

The video doesnt say anything about after he was fired. He was still an employee and head coach at the banquet, and told a committed player (and allegedly players) to go look elsewhere.

I dont care how much some people love Mack, or how much they have this insane view of him being an infallible human being, the fact is it should have NEVER been said by a guy who, regardless of what day, was and is on the payroll of the University of Texas.

Some of you REALLY need to pay attention when you are told by people who should know that Mack Brown was NOT all sunshine and rainbows.

He derailed Nick Saban by most accounts....and you think hed have any problem derailing a kids commitment?

As long as he is getting paid by the school he should not tell recruits to look around. They are already hearing it from every other coach in the country and even the former coach at Texas.... bitter old man

I doubt any of his future Texas teammates care if he takes other visits. They understand you take other visits if your not sure (especially if your encouraged to look by the out going coach). Also, I really doubt Bonney gives a darn what UT internet fans think about him. If he ends of coming to UT, no one will care that he took other visits and if he goes somewhere else then he really won't care what UT fans think about him.

Mack Brown was a snake, he slithered under the radar after another loss to Baylor. He dodged the bullet while he poisoned the well. Mack Brown should have been fired after the 2010 season, Hell I've always thought he should have been fired after the 2003 season.

The good news is Mackdaddy and his ramshackle staff did sign a pretty talented bunch of players to UT that are on the roster even though Mack had no clue about developing their talent. Considering some of the wash out bunches of recruits Mack had over his tenure, Coach Strong has something on campus to work with, is capable of developing the 2014 class he signs next Wednesday.

Best wishes for Coach Strong and staff, I'm looking forward to watching a team managed by a competent coach.

Its depressing really. Texas made the guy a millionaire and helped get him a NC. To me it whips away alot of the good he did here.

I don't believe Mack was trying to poison the recruiting class at all. He is a smart man and that would be a seriously stupid move. I, also, don't believe Mack had the kids best interest at heart, either. It was just all about Mack - is all.

Mack's persona is he wants to be loved. He was being maudlin at best and self pandering at worst.

He has simply gotten too old and it was way past time for him leaving. He should have resigned after the 2005 game, but he simply couldn't let go and overstayed his welcome.
