Dallas voted 'Best International Skyline'

Social media was buzzing throughout a USA Today contest as architecture buffs and residents of the various stakeholder cities weighed in with their opinions. But in the end, everything is still bigger in Texas.

The highly recognizable Dallas skyline took over 40% of the popular vote.

The two experts who nominated Dallas described its worthiness this way:

A skyline known around the world with the syndication of the soap opera that bears this City's name, Dallas has continued to stay flashy. Controversially, it has done this not with the height or style of its newest architecture, but rather through an internal race to adorn its existing and new icons with colorful interactive lighting that cannot be ignored.

Having become initially identifiable by the opening credits of an infamous '80s TV show, the contemporary Dallas skyline tells a story of big banking, big oil, big money, and occasionally big bust. On an aesthetic order, the overall skyline presents a fairly balanced height gradient.

Dallas skyline named "Best International Skyline."

USA TODAY 10Best is a stand-alone travel website which launches a different contest each week. This is Dallas's 12th nomination in the contest, which is just over a year old, and its second 1st Place Finish.

Big Tex recently took top honors as the "Best Quirky Landmark in the USA." The city itself took 7th place for Best City for Shopping.

The Dallas Zoo, AT&T Stadium and Southwest Airlines have also been winners in past contests.

Here is how the other nominees placed in the skyline contest:

  1. Dallas
  2. Chicago
  3. Rio de Janeiro
  4. Toronto
  5. NewYork
  6. Washington, D.C.
  7. St. Louis
  8. HongKong
  9. SanFrancisco
  10. Seattle

Alright! woohoo! Go Dallas! I understand you're dismay monarch but look at it this way at least it's a Texas city.

As a DFW native, I'm not all that fond of Dallas. But it does indeed host one of the best Skylines in the country. Houston is just.....Houston.

Monarch, Don't forget that they also have Jerrah and his travelling flea circus. How can we ever hope to compete with that!! Vegas lite, imho.

I am not from Dallas but agree its skyline is solid.  And terrific at night.

However, I have lived for periods of time in both in San Fran and San Diego, would not put Dallas in their class (in fact, just the idea of it seems a little crazy to me -- I guess its all the water?).

I live in NE Tarrant county and rarely set foot in Dallas county, let alone the city.  It does have an impressive skyline, though, as does my hometown of Houston.

Fort Worth?  Not so much...

And putting it in a contest with Paris seems unfair

Juan, I think to qualify as a skyline there has to be more than 3-4 floors.

Dallas' skyline is a product of the 70s-80s. I think one building has been built since then. The lighting display that these building employ is likely what set it apart from the rest. At night, it is indeed impressive.

FW got started on the downtown boom about the time the skyscraper era ended. Would be hard to imagine Cowtown with big skyscrapers anyway.

I've always like Houston's skyline, it's nice.

Austin doesn't really have anything tall, but it's downtown is very pretty at night, too.

Aaaaaaaah Paris! Every time I've been there I just felt like I was truely alive. Best city on Earth.

Yes, I despise the rudeness of the French but in an odd kind of way it adds to the city's charm.

That's how I felt about Dublin, minus the rudeness.

David Feherty used to tell me I had a standing invite to meet him in Dublin and we would Pub Crawl. I never took him up on it and now that things have changed I wouldn't do that to him. He always said it was the friendliest and prettiest city in the world.

That said, he sees the Dallas skyline when he goes to where he calls home these days. So maybe there's no accounting for taste after all.

I went to Dublin for a wedding

Everyone was so nice

Guess what they wanted to do?

Every single one of my new best friends wanted to buy me a Guinness

Guess how I felt the next morning?

Guess how my driving skillz were?  -- think about it -- rental car, with a clutch, driving on wrong side of the road, sitting in the wrong seat -- i would go to grab the gear shift and end up with the door latch in my hand.

And those f'n roundabouts.  Hungover from Guinness.  In a tiny rental with a f'n clutch.  I told the gf (who absolutely refused to drive) just keep telling me, "Stay Left!).

All of your driving instincts are wrong.  You have to stay constantly vigilant.  You have to fight it.  Example -- there are also some very narrow roads out there, esp once you get out of the city proper.  Think about this for a moment.  Say you are driving down a narrow, single lane road and you see another car coming at you.  What do you do?  Someone has to yield, yes?  What do "we" do in that situation?  We pull off to one side.  What does this mean to them?  Apparently an excuse to yell and shoot me the bird.

And, I kid not, you can be driving along and suddenly you are in the middle of a herd of sheep.  They are just there, in the road, eating along the road, looking at you, chewing.  You must yield to them (this is the law).  So you just have to sort of ease your way through them.

Driving in Ireland is like driving using a mirror

One more really odd twist to driving in ireland is that you will periodically run into packs of gypsies along the road.  they are called "Travelers."  And apparently they are squatters.  They travel in large packs, find some land, and just unload there -- paying no rent of course.  It is a pretty odd sight if you have never seen this before.
