Welcome to the newbies McPhaul and the Tower. Glad to have you hanging around with us.

Does anyone know anything about this recruitment firm UT hired to assist in the AD search?

I have know they have been involved in this type of process before but, I'm not sure where their selections have been hired?

I just found it a bit odd that they hired a firm. Especially when they have have their top "handful" of candidates. I guess there is always a chance that neither Bowlsby or Luck or Jurich pan out.

Can anyone explain the fascination with Luck? I want to be excited about him, but I'm not. What am I missing?

I love his business background, but he hasn't done anything at WVU that really excites me. Just getting from the Big East to the Big 12 won't do it. I'd like to see results, and I haven't seen that at WVU under Luck's tenure.

As I said before--I want to be excited about him and I'm begging for evidence to get excited. What am I missing?

Any reason why Jurich isn't interested?

Think of a firm as a head hunter, but with stealth. It's a way of contacting a candidate with "contacting a candidate."

My question and maybe someone has posted on this point, but should they not let the new AD have input into any coaching hire?

What will the settlement/buyout cost the University? I hear those numbers are really fluctuating from high to extremely high.
If by "fluctuate" you mean change over time, then yes it does. But it's spelled out very specifically in his contract. Currently, it's $2.75 MM but that goes down to $2.25 MM on Jan. 1.

I don't believe any Texas coach ever had a buyout before Mack's last extension. Texas coaches could always be fired any time without owing them a penny. Mack's last contract negotiation initiated a graduated buyout that eventually goes to $0 at the end of his contract.

On the other hand, if Mack goes out with grace, he will be generously taken care of.

Hook 'em.

Definitely exciting (and a little scary) times for Texas.

I think Jurich should be considered as well. Luck has the background and business sense which makes him a viable candidate. Like Lakeman said Luck is not a sexy pick but then again who would be for the AD job?

I believe you McPhaul. I was OB member for a long time.
Welcome to the party. Im pleased to see new more talkative members hitting the boards (and us not hitting your wallet).

Youve got to look at what Luck did before WVU to truly appreciate his business acumen. The things he did in professional sports were pretty damn good, and his education and intellectual abilities are top notch. He's the CEO/Business man type Texas needs who isn't afraid to manage his coaches and make changes if needed.

Any reason why Jurich isn't interested?
The thing with Jurich is he just built a growing monster at UL, his pay is pretty good, and he has a chance at being a big player in the ACC. Hes got what needs there without the hassles of being here.

I've looked at Luck's resume. I know what he's done business wise. That's the part I like. I like that he's young-ish and very progressive in comparison to the current regime.

The evidence I'm lacking is the part where you say he's "not afraid to manage his coaches and make changes if needed." This is where I'm not too excited, especially considering WVU athletics during his tenure. Now, if someone can show me otherwise (where he's done this in other capacities) I'm more inclined to change my mind and be on the Luck train to moneytown. But as of right now? No.

Like I said, I'm not set in stone about the "No" for Luck. It's just when I look at the big picture, I walk away with "meh." It just seems like we're making excuses for other potential candidates and propping up Luck on a pedestal because he has a UT law degree.

I really don't want people to take my posts about this as being mean, evil, snarky, etc. I think what I'm really afraid of is because of Luck's connections to the boys club of UT athletics, he'll be convinced to keep our current coaches and not make changes, especially with Barnes. Like I said, I haven't seen evidence of him doing this at WVU. Maybe at UT he turns a new leaf?

I'm so excited!

I'm so excited!

I'm so..................................................................scared.

No, this is Mack's last season. It is not his choice anymore.
I really hope you are correct with this statement. It is past time for a change. I wont hold my breath but you are getting me excited.

Beating Ou was nice but this team has many flaws. The last 3 games vs good spread teams will be hard for us and I think Bu might embarrass us Dec 7th to close down that stadium.

Even if we go 9-3, i am afraid Mack will want to come back.

I read buyout was 3 million. Im sure he will be "reassigned" bc we hate "firing" anyone in Belmont. Maybe Mack will take the buyout and do some LHN stuff. Personally, i hope we have a clean break for a while and then he can come back in a couple of yrs to do LHN. Take 10 million but time to retire Mack.

Please contine to update us be we love the program but dont have any inside info. Thanks!

Like some of you have said, Luck has done impressive things with Reliant stadium, BBVA Soccer stadium, Toyota Center, etc in Houston. That will be very helpful when we have to build a new basketball stadium soon and expansion for DKR(we know it will happen again soon). Luck doesnt have the glaring success hiring coaches but i dont think he has flopped either. WV is not Texas so he doesnt have the cream of the crop at this disposal. Also, apparently at Texas we have to hire a committee(not to mention $$ alumni) so we will have plenty of help hiring coaches. I agree, he would be a good hire, but i dont know if there is a home run guy out there. At least, im not aware of one.

Jurich has had great success bringing UL to Acc(close to Big12) and hiring great coaches that produce results in all 3 big time sports. He has no ties to Texas but i think that can be a good thing. He has said he is not interested but i think if Texas shows him they are truly interested, he will at least interview.

Steve Patterson, imo could be a dark horse bc he has a lot of Texas ties and has a pretty decent resume. Currently the AD at ASU, he has hired some decent coaches. Someone, imo that should at least get a backdoor interview, maybe more.

Again, i dont see a grand slam guy out there.

For the second time in two weeks I have been told to muzzle it on OB's. The first was by Steve Hicks and this time by Chip. When I meet you all in person, I will share some of what is going on behind the scenes that I can't in public.
If Bowlsby turns us down, it will be Luck. Saban is the leading candidate as of now.
McPhaul, what is your opinion on Bowlsby? Would he be the home run hire? What are the odds he would say yes?

So where are we all meeting up? Its great to get some quality conversation, keep it up guys!
