It is an absolute mess stake to continue to build a program that makes the wealthiest fans the priority and doesn't make the loyal fans the priority. Last year, roughly $35 million of the total athletic department was provided by donor funds (just over 20%). If reforming Bellmont would be a priority, big money donors have less influence.

The solution to reducing the influence of big money donors who is to make the fans in the cheap seats more of a priority. That ain't happening in the foreseeable future.

Could not have said that better . .. . .

Though the other consequence would be MORE MONEY. . . . ..sadly too many non-profits are similarly afflicted but no excuse for it at TEXAS.. . .

fine in theory, but what do you propose? Telling the big money 'no thanks' ? Nobody would do that.

Not the point. . .but it's not one or the other, you can court both. . . .

Outside of selling tickets. . .we do not do as good a job of promoting the brand as we could. . .

Interestingly enough, they actually did this with the Disch Faulk renovations, to use a baseball expression. ..they went out and played small ball. . .there is even a plaque somewhere with my name on it.  ..the Dallas Lunch Bunch raised a couple grand. . .

One example. . .unlike the other schools....we will not buy "broadcast time" on any of the radio networks even though everyone else does. . .thus they get good networks and we're stuck with shitty ones. . .

And I'm pretty sure they make more money selling their own advertising. . .

has our beloved CROSSFIRE turned into...

Burning-Embers-654164.jpg
...smoldering EMBERS?

darrell, what on earth has happened?
we are now only counting 10x sentences vs small paragraphs, as per our illustrious FOB(S)?   THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, is one of the world's premier vs major
institutions of higher learning upon this planet earth.. and this is all that they could come up with?  have they all turned into cowards...
darrell, you have a reputation around these parts of excellence vs sheer and utter professionalism.  therefore, surely, these individuals that help to feed our constant
weekly hunger.. as per a very astute vs comprehensive CROSSFIRE, are indeed aware of this.
yes, everyone is more than aware as per the constant information constraints of the "off season".  however, as i have stated beforehand, this is not some minute little JUCO
that we are seeking factual behind the scenes information on here... this is indeed the UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS... and there really is no OFF SEASON upon the 40 acres!
upon my own personal view, there are so very many queries that can be propositioned.  there are so very many answers that can be shared vs relayed
upon a myriad of subjects...  facilities, game day protocols, prestigious camps, (under the lights), groups vs organizations contributing as per the "game day" atmosphere,
just to name a few...
Horn Sports, now has over 3,000.00 members and growing.. (THANK GOD!)  therefore, darrell, we need to get these FOB(S) on the ball with their plethora of information.
we (members) shall continue to perform any and all to assist you with whatever you need from us to encourage the growth as per our weekly mainstay CROSSFIRE....
however, our sources shall need to step it up!  football season, starts next month... therefore, surely they can do much better...
CROSSFIRE, is what we want!  not smoldering embers....
Monarch - I can assure you that vagueness and innuendoes are sometimes necessary to protect the sources of information as well as being able to present some content that may be interesting.  Gossip is what drives these blogs and sources are protected or there won't BE any gossip.  And how boring is that?

The fact is this IS the off season and juicy info is hard to come by.  Check the other blogs if you don't believe me.

Is Darrell scratching the bottom of the barrel for some good stuff?  Of course he is and so is IT, OB and 247.  Darrell has a source or sources that he taps as best he can.  I know this for a fact as I have confirmed some of the stuff he has written.

He is good, but news is a little bleak these days.  I mean what can be said about the team that hasn't already been said and the same applies to recruiting.  That's why a president being pressured out and the behind the scenes ramifications are interesting to me.

Personally, I think this Crossfire is very interesting and an insight to what is happening adminstrationally.  I'ts a little vague, perhaps, but I can understand why it has to be.  Names cannot be named.

As I said number of times last week, spending inside Bellmont is out of control. I have been too lazy to tear into the numbers to find out how Ohio State, with higher debt service, spends 70% of what Texas spends (per athlete) to run their program. Something isn't making sense. When Patterson was running ASU, their program spent about 58% (per athlete) what Texas is spending.

I think it wod be an excellent question for someone to ask Patterson why spending at Texas seems to be so out of context with that most other programs so and and roughly how much per athlete does he believe would reflect a well managed athletic department. If we were to bring spending more in line with other major programs, the lower expenses would allow both the president of the university and the athletic director to make it clear that if donations come only with significant strings attached, thanks but no thanks. The outside influences are hindering those managing the program from exercising their independent judgment of what is in the long term interests of the program.

If we want to remove some of the outside influences, let the big donors know their influence on the program is being dialed back. The only reason we can't do that now is because of the mismanagement of Bellmont over the last years of Deloss' leadership. I just don't see Patterson as the right individual to gain control of Bellmont.

I "know" that this weeks Crossfire is very good with some good information....so there!!   HOOK'EM

What doesn't make sense is your math. . .

If you are correct.  .how do you explain TEXAS expanding it's lead in net revenues?

Out of control?    A bit of emotional hyperbole. . . .

Some changes needed?  Certainly. . ..but spare us the cliff diving

No, what doesn't make any sense is your lack or reading comprehension. Expenses are the problem. Expenses. Spending. Outflow. If we have less outflow, the inflow from donors that allows the donors to exert influence becomes meaningless. If their influence becomes meaningless, control over the program is not in the hands of donors. We don't need their gifts if we can find d a way to get control over expenses. Texas spends $240,000 per athlete to run its program. OU spends $190,000. Ohio State spends $170,000. If we get control or runaway spending and manage Bellmont's finances in a manner consistent with other major programs we can severely diminish the political influence of donors. If we weren't spending irresponsibly, we would have to act like such money whores and take abuse from donors.
We pulled in $35 mil (more or less) in donations last year. If we had our spending to a level more like other programs, we could refuse $35 million in donor funds, eliminate a number of outside influences and still have our beloved net revenue lead. Stanford manages its program on $103,000 per athlete and has won the Director's Cup twenty years in a row. Why can every other program in the nation manage spending better than UT and why are programs FAR more successful on the field manage their programs on FAR less money?

Edit:

I pulled the 2013 NCAA financial statements for UT, OU and Florida State. The major expenditures for Bellmont were: (In thousands)

Item Texas OU Fla. St.

Student aid 9,350 9,376 9,542

Guarantees 2,206 1,868 2,809

Look at the support/administrative budget for Texas. It is $15 million more than OU and $17 mil more than Fla St. Of the $30 million Texas spent, $26.95 million was unallocated to any individual sport. Look at the game day expenses. Texas was at $22.3 million. OU was a $8.3 million. Fla St. was at $5.8 mil. Texas was four and a half times what Fla St spent. Of the $22.3 mil Texas spent, $14.839 mil was unallocated to any one sport. How do you have almost $15 million in game day expenses that can't be traced to any game?! (FYI- Game day expenses are defined as expenses necessary for competition, including officials, security, event staff, ambulance and such)

Of the money Texas spends that glaringly exceeds that of other programs, almost $40 million isn't allocated to any one sport. Just a lot of bloat other programs do just fine without. OU doesn't seem to be suffering on the field. Fla St. won a national championship in football and they both manage their programs with FAR less "unallocated expenses" than does Texas.

Don't tell me Steve Patterson can't find ways to reform Bellmont. If he can't, we need to fire his ass and hire almost any other athletic director in the nation, because no program has such unexplained and outsized spending as does Texas and take note, I'm not even mentioning salaries paid to coaches.

And Whisenant, if you are reading this, look at the fundraising, marketing, promotional budget for Texas and add in the $2 mil in salaries for the staff of 27 in the media group. Texas spends multiples of what most other program spends for a media group.

It's like trying to gleen real information while quoting Rachel Maddow or Bill O"Reilly. . . .neither's job is to educate nor are they journalists. . .

Their job is to say something outlandish as they scream "look at me" . ..

:P
Why are you linking to 2011 numbers when the 2013 reports have been out for 45 weeks and we will be getting the 2014 DOE numbers at the end of August?

What amazes me is that someone who has invested nothing in the program wants to have 100 percent say in the program...

Look I agree that the big donor's are out of control... but crap man this class warfare is BS...

We need an AD who can get spending under control. Ticket sales, licensing and conference distributions could easily support Bellmont if it was run responsibly. Get things under control, reduce the influence of certain donors and start paying attention to the fans who are expected to fill the stadium. The 30,000 who have had long time season tickets are unquestionably attached to the program. It is past the time to start thinking about how to fill the stadium and make what should be a rocking great time fun for the fans and the players. How college football in Austin, Tx isn't universally recognized as one of the best sporting events in the country is amazing.

No I disagree .. I believe your in the past... everything now is about extra ' s ... the thing about it extras come with a cost and donation. .. donation pay for all the programs
So put you money in the kettle my friend and show your support for UT

45 weeks?   Almost 4 years????

Wow. . ..

You have a habit of making shit up. . . being proven wrong (lest we forget your moronic claim Austin is the biggest metro area in the nation without a pro team, etc). . . . ..

Out of control?

Only thing out of control are your posts. . . .you run around like chicken little or a Kirk Bohls starter kit. . . trying to hysterically get someone to pay attention to you. . . . .

I get expenses are likely too high. . .but there is a big difference between your fantasy world that TEXAS in on the virtue of collapse and the reality that like most successful organizations. . .too much fat is being allowed. . . .

Personally I don't give a F*** what FSU does. . . .they can't even get 80,000 in attendance. . . . but I wonder why you post time and time about tOSU then pick other schools to use. . . .. confirmation bias at play .. .btw. . . not that I don't trust you despite you long history of embellishing and making shit up. . .but kindly post your source for those numbers. . . .

Oh one other thing. . ...all these numbers are self reported so you have no idea who is using what accounting tricks. . . .but your hysteria is worthy of mockery. . . .

The mocking will stop when your midol kicks in (which does not appear to be any time soon). . . .

"45 weeks?   Almost 4 years????"

Do you even realize there are 52 weeks in a year? The DOE data is submitted Aug 31 of each year and available on the web to anyone who wants to see it almost immediately. Google "Equity in Athletics data analysis cutting tool" or go to this website for the data. http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/

I am not one to resort to personal attacks, but I am considering revisiting that policy for you, since your level of maturity seems to below that which would generally entitle someone to a respectful response to your post.

The NCAA figures I used above were submitted pursuant to the following:

Constitution 3.2.4.16.1 “The report shall be subject to annual agreed-on verification procedures approved by the membership (in addition to any regular financial reporting policies and procedures of the institution) and conducted by a qualified independent accountant who is not a staff member of the institution and who is selected by the institution's chancellor or president or by an institutional administrator from outside the athletics department designated by the chancellor or president. The independent accountant shall verify the accuracy and completeness of the data prior to submission to the institution's chancellor or president and the NCAA. The institution's chancellor or president shall certify the financial report prior to submission to the NCAA."

If your argument is that NCAA member institutions are committing wholesale violations of the NCAA Constitution, I would submit you are an idiot who doesn't know what he is talking about.

Go learn how many weeks are in a year and then try to learn civil discourse.

Cheese v duke. Good chit.

I make cheese a slight favorite, based on conditioning but duke's argument has the repetition of the '69 wishbone.

Gonna be a shootout.

what is going on here.....Just answer as a adult and all will be known as The TEXAS LONGHORNS !!!!

this is not funny streettopeschel!  in fact, the provocative tone throughout this discourse is what drives many of our members to complain.  at the very end of the day.. there must be an adult in the room...
