Rutgers and Maryland made sense in the cable days.  The Big 10 Network wasn't on the New York or Washington DC cable systems.  They were added to those systems after Rutgers and Maryland were added to the conference.  There were a lot of subscribers in those markets.  

Now they're just dead weight

One thing I'm noticing as I watch all the pundits present versions of how they think things will end up . . . Baylor and Kansas seem to be left totally out of the major player conferences. No super conference scenario that I've seen includes either of them.

National championships in basketball may come from the lesser conferences, at least for a time.

If I were a betting man, I'd say at some point you'll see some sort of alliance between the Big 12 and Pac 10. The Big 12 really doesn't offer anything for the west coast schools to move. And the Pac 10 really doesn't offer anything to Big 12 schools. Its a push. IMO, they have to do something so some sort of scheduling alliance may be a result.

The Pac 10 won't budge as long as Oregon and Washington are still around. But adding a San Diego State or Boise State does nothing to help them.

SDSU gives them games in SoCal, but another poster recommended just leasing SoFi in LA for big games. So you're right, neither will grow the Pac's revenue pie. Hopefully, whatever "alliance" the Big 12/Pac form will entail more than a "gentlemen's agreement".

We've seen how that turned out.

Who's next for B1G expansion? 

Long story short, IF Notre Dame wants to or can get out of their ACC contract, they're #1 on the list. If not, we may see Cal, Stanford, UW, and UO in the B1G soon. So long, Pac. 

OSU and Wazzu to the MWC.

AZ, ASU, CU, and Utah to the Big 12 (16).

Yeah, now we find out how committed ND is to Catholicism. ? 

But, seriously, Michigan and the B1G have a long, early history of banning ND. It's complicated. ND half-assed "joined" the ACC in the first place bc most of their alumni are on the east coast.

Yes the Michigan angle is interesting.  Considering that South Bend is 180 miles from Ann Arbor it seems like this could be a great annual rivalry if Notre Dame could stomach it.

Yes the Michigan angle is interesting.  Considering that South Bend is 180 miles from Ann Arbor it seems like this could be a great annual rivalry if Not Dame could stomach it.

They used to play almost yearly for about 40 years until recently, so I'm sure they could stomach it. The move to the acc prevented them from continuing the rivalry

ND vs Michigan

Played a total of 43 times since their first game in 1887 with many gaps in the storied rivalry. That's not to say it wouldn't be marquee as conference mates in a revamped B1G. I won't be surprised if ND stays in the ACC, though.

Financially and geographically the B1G makes way more sense. Also being locked in until 2036 may be a problem. 

On the other hand it doesn't sound like money is the only factor so it wouldn't be too shocking if they joined the ACC,  and by adding Notre Dame the ACC may be able to get a better TV deal which could reduce the money difference.

I know WVU fans are hoping ND joins the ACC as full members bc they're convinced they'll be #16. But, who knows?

Lol, It's possible the ACC would take them with Notre Dame, but no way the B1G would take them over Washington, Oregon and Stanford.
