REGGIE HEMPHILL

Lost in the news of Saturday’s loss to Baylor was the re-commitment of 2016 Manvel (TX) wide receiver Reggie Hemphill. Hemphill was previously committed to Mack Brown, but decommitted when Charlie Strong took the job. The young wideout wanted to reassess his options before pledging to the new coaching staff. Hemphill has been to Austin multiple times this year and gave his pledge to Coach Strong shortly before the Horns kicked off against Baylor.

Hemphill joins Collin Johnson as the second pledge in the 2016 class. He chose Texas over offers from Clemson, LSU, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and UCLA. The commitment represents positive momentum for a coaching staff that has struggled with premier offensive players on the recruiting front.

Hemphill adds to a list in the next two classes that will have Texas loaded at the wide receiver position. Hemphill ranks as a 4 star by most recruiting services, and is in the Rivals 250 for 2016.

Film Analysis:

Hemphill stands 6’1, 174 pounds and has the frame to add a little weight. He has long arms and is an incredibly smooth player. Although Hemphill doesn’t show elite game speed, his top end is plenty fast with great short distance quickness and an understanding of the position.

Hemphill shows good hands at the line of scrimmage to beat press coverage and the ability to accelerate smoothly in and out of his breaks to create separation. He’s a natural hands-catcher who excels after the catch and is dangerous in the open field. He also shows the ability to pose a threat on special teams and is a willing blocker when lined up out wide.

He is a bit raw in his route running and could use some work tightening that up. Hemphill plays with a lot of confidence and really embraces being the big play threat on the field.

Final Verdict:

Wide receiver is always a difficult position to project, but Hemphill has all the tools to be a better than average player in the Big 12. Hemphill’s ceiling is that of an all conference player who could project to be a high round draft pick. He has the size and speed to contribute early in his career, and could be a big boost for a Texas offense that currently lacks playmakers.

Good stuff. . .he will be important as I don't think we hang onto Burt. . . .think he flips to Auburn when it's all said and done.

I've been very impressed with the job the new staff has done recruiting receivers. I thought mack took too many projects and converted quarterbacks, these guys are all natural pass catchers

This is an interesting discussion .. .

As a counter point, I will over Gary Patterson who recruited QBs and RBs by the bushel and turned them into DB, LB and even DEs.

Not saying there isn't truth to your comment and I really like this staff's current targets.

I think it boils down more to knowing what type of guys you want.  I would also argue that I think it's easier to turn skill guys into DB's, LB's and DE's (especially high school running backs who may play both ways) than it is to turn them into guys that run good routes and are natural pass catchers.  I also believe it is a mistake to try to turn running quarterbacks into running backs for the most part.  I was critical of the move made with Overstreet because I believe it requires a different style.  It works in some cases but by majoriy I don't believe it does.  For the most part, I think if you have a guy that plays Quarterback in high school but won't at the next level you take your chances here and there.  I think Lorenzo Joe is going to be a good player, but I don't know that you can take a big chunk of them and make them your receivers.  I like the targets so far who have size, speed, natural catching ability, and the ability to block downfield.

Did we offer Malik's teammate as a LB or receiver?
Strong & BJM played catch-up on McNeal to get the Horns back in the game, but now Texas is solidly selling McNeal on his ability to come here and immediately impact the offense. In fact, that's what helped earn Texas one of his last OV spots.

Thanks Matt I was hoping we were selling receiver since that what he was wanting. Have you heard any comments from the recruits that were at the game?

Reggie is going to be able to come in early. He is not the biggest kid but is smooth and faster than people realize. Ran on those relay teams that went to state for Manvel. He would actually be the QB if DJ wasn't there. I have seen him at a lot of camps and he always has a good attitude. I think getting that early offer might have hurt him because he didn't seem as hungry on the camp scene this spring but I think he is back to dominating.
