Coaching News... (UPDATE: Drew Mehringer Officially Hired)

I take my hat off to those who respond as you did in item 2. Not enough people in the world today do that. Its seemingly cool these days to simply double down, even when you're wrong.
Thanks. Every now and then I have to remember to not take myself so seriously. Thankfully, I have a wife that reminds me not to do that either. Quite often, if I'm being truthful  :)

Call me "Watson-shy" but this is not what I would consider the best get.  Remember how people and the media called Watson the "QB whisperer" and how great he was with QBs?  Yea I do...pour me another cup.  Even 12 months later he was considered a miracle worker with Swoopes.  I remember 6 months into Strong first season I asked the board "Why does everyone think Watson is such a great QB coach?" and all I heard was "You have to be joking, look at how well Swoopes is developing".  Yea right.

This Drew guy seems more like another buddy hire to me.  I am just not buying into all the hype "YES we got our man...Drew Mehringer" or the fall back safety answer of "hes a great recruiter" or "an up and coming star".

Orlando was a good hire IMO.  Houston was #14 in total defense and he plays a very aggressive blitzing style of defense.

Basically Herman hired his "comfort" staff.  Ok fine.  As long as he wins idc.

A few of us may have been drawn off sides on the Mehringer hire.  The most important staff hire is easily the DC and I (along with most others) am very pleased with Orlando.  DC is much more important than OC because no matter who Herman  hires, it will be Herman's offense that is employed.  The same one we saw at Houston (that was not Applewhite's baby) and the same one we saw at tOSU.  It's his offense and he will likely spend the bulk of his time on that side of the field.

Second, Coach H obviously thinks highly of his new WR coach, and Mehringer has a reputation as a very good and aggressive recruiter.  Trust in the Her Man.... they don't hand out those MENSA memberships for nothing!
This pretty much sums up what was rolling around in my head.

Fingers crossed that he kicks ass as a WR coach, recruiter, and "passing game coordinator"...whatever that is \m/
I have studied this extensively and thoroughly beginning in the Mack Brown era of multiple coordinators and numerous titles.  My studies have drawn me to the conclusion that the meaning and significance of the title "passing game coordinator" is either a small bump in pay or the ability to hire you under the charade that it is not a lateral move.

That is correct. Bump in pay and increase in title.

Or a step back from OC at Rutgers in Mehringer's case.
