Coaching Changes, Rumors, Misc.

I’d like for us to go grab a NFL guy to coach the DL, TE coach has to be a rainmaker in recruiting

Happy for Rhett. I covered him when he was a QB in high school here in NW Arkansas. I thought he would have been a good fit for us as well. He had a parting of the ways with Malzahn, who is a control freak and had to go out and prove he could do the job on his own.

I may have asked you this before, but do you know Chip Souza? He's a sportswriter there in NW Arkansas and a friend of mine.

Sounds about right.

WITH A PAIR OF NEW COORDINATORS AND NO MORE EXCUSES, NEXT SEASON AT TEXAS IS ALL ABOUT TOM HERMAN

For the New Year, Tom Herman has two new coordinators, a feel-good bowl victory and $1 million for hanging around as Texas’ coach.

Things could be worse. Things have been worse, recently, if you remember the losses to TCU and Baylor and nearly getting beaten by Kansas.

Somehow, despite going 8-5, Texas has some semblance of momentum going into 2020 after the 38-10 upset of Utah in the Alamo Bowl. All signs point to quarterback Sam Ehlinger and offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi returning for their senior seasons.

While the end product of the coordinator search didn’t light up message boards — in a good or a bad way — the hiring of offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and defensive coordinator Chris Ash merits a grade of a least a B, maybe more if Ash can thwart Big 12 offenses the way he did Big Ten offenses at Ohio State.

Of course, he had a metric ton of future draft picks playing for him on defense in 2014 and ’15.

Yurcich’s task will be blending his Air Raid roots with Herman’s power spread offense. Of course, he was able to have a productive relationship with an interesting personality in Mike Gundy for six seasons at Oklahoma State.

So is 2020 about the new guys getting the job done? Not really.

It’s not even about Ehlinger, coming off a season where he threw for 3,663 yards and 32 touchdowns, while ranking second in the Big 12 in passer rating despite some bad struggles in the second half of the season.

No, it’s about Herman.

He made the decision to can Todd Orlando and demote Tim Beck and then handpicked their successors.

Herman had actually been the primary play-caller the last two season, albeit reluctantly.

He said before the Alamo Bowl that losing that duty will be good.

“I know, I was a better head coach when I didn’t have that responsibility, and I owe it to this program to be the best version of me,” Herman said. “I think just the way I’m wired works, some people that works well for, some it doesn’t. Some have tried it both ways and have fallen in love with one way and not so much the other way, but I know for me, you feel like you become a jack of all trades and master of none and I don’t ever want to rob Peter to pay Paul and diminish my ability as a head coach to, to try to be the best offensive play caller that I can be.”

So now he has Yurcich to call plays and a strong comfort level with Ash going back a decade.

This is Herman’s chance — probably last chance — to become a CEO coach, the label that defined Mack Brown at Texas. Even Brown acknowledged a lot of learning on the job.

In five seasons as a head coach, Herman, 44, clearly has room for growth.

There are a ton of contradictions with Herman.

He’s legitimately smart, even if the Mensa membership is more of a curse than a blessing at times. You don’t beat Oklahoma and Florida State at Houston or upset Georgia and Utah in bowl games at Texas without putting game plans together. Then at times, he can come off less as an Einstein-quoting coach and more like “Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius.”

Under Herman, Texas has upped its social media game, a key component now in recruiting. But Herman himself as become an unintentional meme machine: securing the bag against Missouri, the pregnant pause at Big 12 media days in 2018, head butting Malcolm Roach without a helmet, one-finger saluting the Longhorn Network cameras. And there’s more.

For better or worse, Texas fans expect a certain decorum from their head coach. They don’t like cringe-worthy moments.

Make no mistake, Herman has the backing off his administration, including President Greg Fenves and AD Chris Del Conte.

Now with the changes he made and after four seasons, Herman doesn’t have any excuse to, as he put it, become the best version of himself.

I read somewhere that Charlie Strong had been fired at South Florida. He is a great guy, but he just couldn't handle the top job without an all world QB. I wish him the best of luck. He is one of the good guys.

Hindsight being 2020... Mack and Charlie should of stayed put.

Strong a good guy?   I bet the Louisville booster who's wife was getting banged by Charlie would disagree. Also telling a recruit he would have someone take the SAT for them is not what a good guy does. Strong is a POS..   And lets not even talk about all the fake BS he told Herbstreit so he could leak the BS and try yo hurt the University. Also when he tried to make his shitty performance about race.  F him...

You vehemently denied rumors about Drew Meringher when others on this board claimed to have heard otherwise, I hope you have your facts straight in regards to this post right here. I’ve never heard of any such things about Coach Strong and unless you have a level one source, sharing this info in this manner is irresponsible. I don’t believe any of this.

I don't know if any of this is true. I'm just glad Strong is gone. Should have never been hired in the first place. UT could have gotten a more experienced HC and saved us from more sh*t storms of losing seasons.

The Mehinger stuff was BS and has been refuted by everyone...   Ask around about ole Charlie....
