Cherry exit? (The Chexit)

In talking to some friends they said maybe CS is lying to the recruits. Supposedly we promised Makik OLB and now he is inside. And we didn't tell Cherry he would be competing with Malik, and we took Lampkin knowing he didn't qualify. They also said CS changed his story when he was under oath at the wickline hearing. I said all hearsay and no proof. Any thoughts to help me with a rebuttal
In talking with Malik after his commitment he indicated he was told he'd play wherever he could help. He was moved to MLB due to thin numbers in spring and has thrived there. I don't believe what you've heard to be the case.

When Cherry signed, I loved his bravado, but I kept thinking, is this guy good enough to compete at this level? He's about an inch taller than Charlie. I think Cherry was always a fallback guy if a couple other freshmen LBs did not sign. He was also a guy that Charlie knew would help recruit more Florida kids, which he did. But once he got here, I think he quickly saw that he was not to the level of several guys ahead of him. And the Hager kid apparently is much better than advertised, although I don't know how he could have been overlooked based on his pedigree. I can't blame Cherry, really. If Texas gets the targets at LB they are hoping for, including Moses, then Cherry gets pushed even further down. I wish him all the best wherever he goes. I'm sure this has been an eye-opener for him and probably the first time in his life he's not been one of the top dogs. That is a tough blow to the ego.

You should spend less time talking with aggys.

As players grow past age 18, their strengths develop in unpredictible ways. Also, coaches are going to experiment with different players in different positions for a number of reasons. If it happens a kid is better suited to play position X when he was recruited to play position Y: A) do you think the coach is going to play him other than where he will do the most for the team and  b ) have you ever heard a football player say they understand they have a better shot at the NFL playing position X but they will quit unless they get to play position Y because they would rather have fun playing college ball than have a shot at a pro career? Ask your aggy friends if Tannehill should have quit when he got moved from WR to QB.

Only an aggy would say a head coach was dishonest with a recruit because he didn't explain everyone the recruit would have to compete against for playing time. No serious player gives two shits who they have to compete against. They just get out and compete.

Seriously, just ignore the aggys. They consider Kevin Sumlin to be the type of coach every program should aspire to hiring.

Apparently he walked out on practice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But speaking honestly, the loss of Duvonta Lampkin was a bigger problem than the loss of both Cherry and Catalon.

Duke wanted to transfer last year after being on campus a week because he was behind Malcolm and Jonathan. He gave it another season and after Saturday's practice he decided he was done.

Right now he's getting recruited over and that sucks. He didn't ever really want to work for his reps so now he's trying to pursue PT.

This one is all Duke and has nothing to do with Strong (except for the fact that Strong expects his players to win their positions through hard work)

DO NOT FREAK OUT PEOPLE!

The guys at Inside Texas built a great relationship with Malik and talked a lot about that aspect during his recruitment. As I remember it, one of the moments when that recruitment turned was when the coaches were able to convince Malik that they could build a defense around him playing inside, whereas to that point he'd thought of himself only as an edge rusher. He'll do both at Texas — he'll blitz early and often, from the inside and the edge.

Malik isn't Cherry's problem. Cherry is Cherry's problem. We're supposed to believe Cherry didn't know we signed four other linebackers?

On the Wickline thing, none of us know how the playcalling system works, but I completely believe Wick weighs in before and during games. Does that constitute "playcalling duties"? That's up to the judge.

You talk to too many Aggies.

While I am not freaking out... That "Florida 5" concept was about the biggest joke ever. Are we gonna get any one of the FL 5 qualified and on campus?

drgilbert, you will notice in conversations with aggy that even when you provide accurate answers, they only lead to more questions. The goalposts will always move. Aggy puts mags on them with chrome rims.

Kinda like a certain political party. But, that's for another forum. ;)

Strong knows what he's doing. Hence how quick he signed Cherry's transfer papers. I don't think we should panic at all. It's sad to see a recruit go but I'm glad it's before the season gets underway. Catalon wasn't going to get the PT he desired and like the above posts mentioned Cherry was a big fish in a small pond, talked a great game but at the end it just wasn't meant to be. I wish them the best of luck but when Texas holds that national championship trophy soon I'll be even more happy. Hook em!!!!!

That third part... That could hurt recruiting. It depends what it is that made Cecil upset during fall camp. Whatever it is could be scary for Florida recruiting.
I disagree. Look at Charlie Strong's first class at Louisville. Some ungodly percentage of his first class were drafted into the NFL… right?

Charlie is trying to put the"T" back in to Texas. Some will make it… some won't.

IMO, Cherry made a great deal of bold claims… before ever putting on the pads for Texas. That always sat funny with me.

I hope the kid sticks it out… and makes something of himself… and contributes to the program.

But, if he leaves, I do not think that will hurt Florida recruiting.

Charlie Strong has too good a track record developing talent from Florida… for Texas to be tarnished because Cecil Cherry decides to go back home.

I posted this before all the info came out. The thing I was worried about was him having a legit excuse and then bad mouthing the program and whatnot. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I should just delete that.

This x 1,000,000

Thanks guys. Appreciate all the comments. I am not always up to speed with everything going on and I can't always defend the program as well as I would like to

In the vein of being honest, this really does bum me out. We can all speculate about Cherry's character, work ethic and so forth. But one thing I'd be willing to bet on is that our team would have been better with Cherry than it will be without it.

Now I'm not stating Cherry's absence results in an additional loss, or anything of that magnitude. It was too early to tell what role Cherry would have. But this guy was an emotional leader for this team before he ever stepped onto the 40 Acres. Ultimately, I guess that's why this is so disappointing. He was a huge recruiter for this team last year and seemed to be the type of player who could easily buy into what Strong is doing here. The fact that he hits like a wrecking ball is only an added bonus.

I'm not sure what led to him leaving the program, I guess I could read the last two pages as it's been a little while since I've been able to catch up. But regardless of whatever it is, I think it's a shame. On the field or on the sidelines, Cherry was the kind of kid who could be a great piece in our rebuilding process. I just hope that his decision to leave the program, was his decision and not something fueled by family and friends. I hope the kid does well for whichever program he finds himself on. I know Texas will be fine without him. But it would have been nice to see him in the center of the Pre-Game chant in a bowl game a few years down the road.

Cecil has talked about his ticket out of Florida was the NFL. I could see that he was worried about sitting on the bench for four years behind Malik.

I'm disappointed that he left before giving UT a chance, but I do hope to see him in NFL someday.
