Charlie Strong....

I agree... I look at it like this. If Texas is the #1 job in the land, everyone would want it, and you'll land Saban.
Well, there is this:

I'm told Patterson's interview with Charlie Strong went "very well."

Not to debate, but is it the #1 job in the country?
And it's surprising to many because they see Strong heading to Florida or Miami soon, not Texas.
Well, the national media has been saying it is over and over, so definitely top 3.

Some in and around the Louisville program are very nervous right now. Surprising as it may sound, some think he will leave and take the Texas job.
Not sure if this is smoke or the real deal, but around UofL are very concerned.
...come on deuce, you are much too well versed as per this nonsense...

you, as well as everyone else, are well aware that "strong" is only being used as the "token" as per the "rooney rule". i for one, think that this is pathetic, as well as a shame.... but this is indeed true. just take at look at what the "texans" did with "lovie smith".... they new damn well, that they had absolutely no intention upon hiring this man.... they only used him as the "token".

please pardon my direct bluntness my friend, but i did not join "horn sports" to throw out "blanks". happy new year.

Posted this in other thread but yet to have a response to why people don't want him. I think strong would be a great hire. He's semi young. Has developed great defenses and players.... See that again DEVELOPED. He has toughness (we all know is needed). He's an X's and O's guy. Another thing that I hate is even a factor is that he is black. That could be huge in recruiting and whether you want to admit it or not it's helped a&m. Also in recruiting, offensive players come dime a dozen. Who is the last good defensive player we had that has really been great and played up to recruiting status (jeffcoat). You could make case for Malcolm brown but he didn't really progress as much as hopes. Hell ashawn Robinson was probably better for Alabama. Recruits will want to play for him. I really want to hear why people don't want him. I understand Texas ties helps briles, but what big game has he won?!? Strong one a bcs game against a damn good Florida team. Strong had his boys ready for the most recent bowl game.
Good post. I like Strong as a candidate. He isn't my number one, but I don't know all the details from vetting and interviews. I think the pent up Saban hype will make any other hire feel like a failure to a lot of our fans. I think that is sad and a disservice to anyone we get not named Saban. But, it is what it is at this point.

Monarch, man, I hope you are wrong. I never pulled in candidates for "token" interviews. Did I recognize the need for diversity at high levels in my organization and do something about it? He'll yes, but I didn't "settle" or play games with the emotions of good people to do worthless interviews. I just don't believe Texas would do that. Call me a prisoner of Hope, pal. :)

There is no Rooney Rule in college sports.

...bevo11, you are absolutely correct my friend upon "noble" fashion. i would never believe that "texas" would honor this form of tradition intentionally. however, "korn / ferry" would never complete their mission without honoring the "rooney" rule. all bases shall need to be covered as per "appearances" sake.

Please reassure them that it will not be Strong.

Gotcha pal, and yes, agree!

@ Monarch...I don't think all do.
Some of us get it, we understand the purpose a "Rooney Rule" serves, and we can get behind an exciting potential hire without thinking it has anything to do with his being a person of color.

ETA: This conversation makes me cringe. I'm pulling out.

Here is Dennis Dodd's latest regarding Fisher still being in play for Texas (filed today, not long ago) --

You -- Seminole Fan -- could not begrudge him for taking perhaps the top job in the country. There's a reason a couple of Texas regents met with agent Jimmy Sexton early last year to gauge interest regarding Nick Saban. They thought they could pry Saban away from Alabama.
What hope would FSU have? There's an old saying that I have bastardized for purposes of this column: When Texas wants you, things start look eerily like the inside of Don Corleone's office. It's an offer you can't refuse.

This report says "a group of billionaire donors" is ready to make their case for Fisher.

Let's put that another way: When University of Texas billionaire donors settle on their man, "make their case" is the politically correct way to put it.

That's why we'd be foolish to think Fisher-to-Texas is over.
Bold: mine.

guys...any agent worth a darn is going to float rumors about their clients heading to Texas, Miami, Florida etc. We should not be surprised to hear MANY names being thrown out in regards to Texas. What better way to increase your stock than having your name mentioned in regard to coaching vacancies?

He once said he would love to coach his alma mater! Florida would be a perfect fit with all his recruit connections in FL.

...i know this, but we all get it right....
Why does Texas need to interview a minority candidate? Is there some gourndswell from the media claiming UT needs to adhere to the NFL's Rooney Rule?

IMO the answer is the simplest one. Strong is a candidate along with others.

Strong would be an excellent coach for Texas. He may not be the top coach but he is a top 5 coach. Rooney rule... really guys? Some people seem to think that he is being interviewed just because he is a minority are clueless. First of all the rule is not in college and 2nd he is a great coach. I don't know if he will be the coach and he is not my top pick.. but if he is picked he would be a great coach.

I am... and I've said on twitter I believe this is a ton of smoke. Yes, I understand the game very well my friend.

Texas IS one of the Top 3 jobs in the country, no doubt about it. My only point was those around the program didn't put much "stock" into Texas. They were/are prepared for Florida to come calling. As I've also said, for selfish reasons, I hope you guys land Saban. Being a WV boy I hope he does and I'd support him, except on game day.

Texas is a top 3 job, I think Florida is right there as well. Strong has history with Florida so that was the concern and also, we have been hearing Harbaugh, Tomlin, Saban, etc, Strong does not belong in that group, so it's catching you guys off guard. For perspective, Texas is a top 3 job, Florida top ten, Louisville and Miami are top 20 ish, West Virginia is in the top 50.
