Chalk Talk - Trench Warfare

Good breakdown for those that want to know how the line works - from a guy that played on the offensive line (Coleman played for North Texas under head coach Todd Dodge).

Good stuff, Coleman.  And Happy Birthday!

ok now, quit blushing....

You could probably write volumes on this subject...having played them all at one time or another! I remember you at a 310lb guard and a 285lb tackle. Your guard play was very high level...maybe NFL caliber, but the cartilage issues got you and tackle seemed better going forward. As it turned out, your tackle blocking in space was outstanding too. If you didn't end up walking like a refugee, you might a been starting in the NFL!

Once again great article.  I'm curious, you expounded a bit on the differences between the left and right tackle.  Is there any difference in philosophy/physical requirements with the guards, or are they considered pretty much the same?
First of all, thank you!

The guard position has changed a great deal throughout the history of football. Back when players had to play both ways Guards generally played Linebacker on defense which, in turn, made them smaller and more mobile blockers. But then in the late 90's Guards like Larry Allen tipped the scales at almost 400lbs!!

The Guard has never really been emphasized left or right but, every team is different. If you like to run to the right side of your offense, then the Left Guard may be a better puller and the Right Guard may be a better straight up run blocker.

What's everyone's opinion on Hammad possibly transferring? I thought that kid was gonna be a serious contributor for us.

Really hurts for depth reasons. Crazy to think he was ranked so high and even recruited by Wickline when he was at OSU and now he is gone. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another older kid leave if a young kid takes his reps. Sounds like you have to really want to be at UT and some of the older guys may not be feeling it if they aren't playing much.
