Texas was talking with him. Texas would have had to wait to hire him for quite a while (January 10th), so things cooled off.

Now he's off to Baylor.

Matt Rhule came into Baylor with the big question mark being his lack of connections in the state of Texas. Baylor has now had 3 splash hires in David Wetzel (San Antonio Reagan HC and THSCA Head), Shawn Bell (Cedar Ridge HC), and now Joey McGuire. Thats an ace recruiter in the Austin area, Dallas area, and a San Antonio area guy with a ton of connections.

Matt Rhule seems to be making up for his lack of connection by making good first impressions. David Wetzel did not even know Coach Rhule until a couple hours before taking the job, "I didn't know him until the other night," Wetzel said, chuckling. "Isn't that something? It happened pretty fast. It’s been a whirlwind deal. This is one of those things. I’ve got to go do it. I can’t pass it up. It’s a great opportunity for me to do something in my career. It’s a great deal. I’m looking forward to it.” Joey McGuire recently told WFAA, "I have talked to a few, but (I'm) not just going to go to college just to do it... Has to be with the right guy." Less than a few days into meeting him, it seems like Matt Rhule is the "right guy."

This now leaves Texas still searching for a DFW area recruiter.

BFD.... The hand wringing over this is amazing. So now we're are supposed to be scared of Baylor and one high school coach. Good lord...
No. It's just impressive that they've been able to put together a staff that seems like it has a lot of star power for recruiting when Rhule had set foot in Texas once before he got to Baylor.

The thing about this staff is

  1. There are now a lot of cooks in the kitchen. Three former HC's in the same room will be interesting to see. I know these guys won't be making any huge in game decisions, but it's still something to think about. Squishing together good coaches and forcing them to work together doesn't always work.
  2. Lots of inexperience in the coaching staff.
  3. He still hasn't put together an offensive staff that "blows your skirt up" so far... or one at all.
Briles and his staff, for all their lumps, were able to meld together coaching, recruiting, and physicality without sacrificing one for the other. Rhule is going to have to figure out how to do that here too.

While this doesn't mean Baylor is for sure going to rebound back into the early 2010 days, Baylor needed all the help they could get with goodwill and recruiting, and this sure as hell helps them.

Also, Texas would be going crazy if they got McGuire. The hype would be double what Baylor is getting.

You don't have to be scared, but minimizing this hire is short sighted.  Joey McGuire is by far and away the best combination of personality and X's and O's ability at the high school level in the state.  If McGuire is let into a living room, it will be bad news to whatever school is competing against Baylor for that student athlete.  There is so much respect for Coach McGuire in the DFW area from his peers.  This is significant whether you choose to believe it or not.
