Writer: Texas No. 17 team entering 2013 season

SI.com college football writer Andy Staples has the Longhorns — who finished this season No. 19 in the AP Top 25 — as the No. 17 team in his way-too-early preseason rankings for the 2013 season.

Staples fears he’s underestimating the Longhorns, who return all but two defensive starters.

“Given the amount of quality players they return on offense and defense, they should compete for the Big 12 title and maybe even the national title,” Staples writes. “But I need to see it on the field. Since 2010, the Longhorns simply haven’t lived up to their preseason billing.”

If there’s anything holding Texas back, Staples says, it’s that it hasn’t performed well in big games since 2010.

“Games aren’t played on paper,” he writes. “Sometimes they’re played in Dallas during the Texas State Fair.”

Ouch.

Can Texas win a National Championship next year? Hell yes, it just depends on which one the gals want to win.

The expectations have to be set at 10 wins and competing for the Big 12 Title. Otherwise this team makes no progress and is still right where they are. As painful as it is for me to say this, I can't see expectations being a National Title. The team didn't show enough last season to give me any indication a Title is an expectation. But is it feasible? Of course, Texas does have the talent to make it happen. Just how feasible remains to be seen.

My question is can this team make the improvements necessary to take that next step. I have four questions that need to be answered if Texas wants to meet expectations.

Can the defense actually compete, stop, or at least slow down an opposing offense?

Can the offensive line be a force that opens up running lanes for Texas' talented running backs?

Can David Ash be consistent and show he can lead his team throughout the year?

Can Texas find answers for the hole at punter and the lack of any reliable place kicker?

If Texas can answer all of those questions with a Yes, then Texas has a chance to exceed expectations.

If Texas answers 3/4 of those Questions then I think expectations are just met.

The answer to your quesions:

Maybe

Maybe

Big Maybe

I think the kicking game will be a little better next year. Hell, maybe Fera punts and kicks next season but Nick Jordan did a decent job as a true freshman.

Texas needs 10 wins an a conference championship next year or else........

No. Plain and simple. Alabama could, again. Aggie could. Unfortunately. But we cannot. We're a defensive coordinator and a head coach and a quarterback away still, none of which are likely to change next year.
