Burton saying

Recruiting High School players ,  hell that is exactly the type of High School Coach we need on the staff !!!!!
And he is evidently good at what he does.  Traylor is definitely getting a rep as a big time recruiter.

If we make assistant coaching changes, I want us to get the top recruiter at whatever position we are hiring. I have said all along that coaches are way better coaches if they get the best players.

From where did Gilmer "recruit" players and how?

I've been to Gilmer and can't say there's much to entice somebody to move there. Do they have open enrollment?
Small schools are notorious for recruiting. You don't think Celina doesn't recruit?

Hell, I know the guy that moved people into Melissa and gave them a place to live and they won state a few years ago.

Celina and Pilot Point were notorious for recruiting, especially under a certain former coach. Who later coached at Sherman and conveniently hired Jason Burleson's dad as an assistant coach. You may remember Jason as he played tight end at Texas.

If Traylor's relationship with opposition at the High School level was a detriment to recruiting, Briles would have never got out of Houston. That was a damaged reputation.

I'm familiar with the Dallas ISD scandals of kids going to school outside their attendance zones to boost the hoops programs at Madison and Kimball. I've also heard rumors about Johnathan Gray's dad gaining employment in Aledo from North Crowley. Hell, Shawn Robinson's parents were hired at Denton Guyer as coaches, too, for the same reasons. Private schools, such as Ft. Worth All Saints and Bishop Dunne, offer scholarships to underprivileged kids who happen to be great athletes.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I'm trying to understand the allure of living in Gilmer.

If I recall, GJ Kinne was the first
I don't know if Kinne was the first, but his transfer to Gilmer for his senior season in 2006 was probably the most

controversial. Kinne played QB at Canton for his father, G. J. Kinne, Sr. G. J. Jr. was a very good dual threat QB;

he started for the Canton varsity as a freshman. G. J. Sr., the coach, was shot in the chest by a disgruntled Canton

player's father (he survived). Sr. later took a position at Baylor, where he had played college ball as a LB. When G.

J. Sr. left for Baylor, G. J. Jr. left Canton to play his senior year at Gilmer, where he lived with his mother and step

father. G. J. Jr. had a good senior year and was a highly regarded recruit. He signed his LOI with Texas and spent

one year there before transferring to Tulsa.

Yep. I wrote a piece on Gary Joe Kinne Sr. when he was coaching at Sherman at a 7-on-7 tournament. He would not speak much on the shooting. As it turned out, that 7-on-7 tournament ultimately led to his being let go at Sherman when video showed Sherman players wearing school-issued helmets, which in Texas is a no-no for some insane reason. But he seemed like a good dude. Not sure where he is now.

outside of Watson with the QB recruits Robinson and Wickline have really struggled recruiting so many top players in their areas have been assigned to other coaches.Strong has said many times that all coaches can likely coach their position but recruiting is top priority i.e. the old TE & WR coaches from 2014 who threw up airballs last year

Need we bring up Friday Night Lights - Odessa Permian?  How about Manvel?  How about magnet school, Bellaire, who was busted for recruiting to their baseball program?

This is sports in Texas and mostly football.

The thing at Allen high school is a disgrace.  They have over 6,000 kids in that school and a stadium most colleges would be proud of.

I can't believe the UIL hasn't stepped in on that rich mans playground and school enrollment.

It's embarrassing IMO.

Manvel is a part of Alvin ISD and zoning for Manvel HS includes a number of unincorporated cities zoned to attend Manvel HS as well as a portion of Pearland, just west of Hwy 288.  Manvel is a town of just over 5,000 people, but with Alvin ISD having its zoning contain a portion of Pearland and cities referenced above, Manvel is 6A.  That will change due to Shadow Creek HS opening next year (9th and 10th), which is located in the growing area of Pearland, west of 288.  Manvel isn't recruiting, really don't have to (until next year) :)  .

Have to disagree with "Kinne" being a nice guy comment.  Any HS coach who gets thrown out of a pee wee football game, as a fan, in Mesquite while coaching at Sherman is an idiot.  He certainly brought a few kids in at Sherman and it was working until he and the powers to be had a falling out.

I have a grandkid who is a senior at Sherman HS. Kinne wasn't exactly popular, especially with parents who had kids playing other sports. To Kinne, who was also AD, football was the only sport that mattered.

You can say that about most high school ADs who double as the football coach.

I'm sure football pays the bills most everywhere, too.

For sure keep Traylor. Unless Wickline wants out keep him. IMO Wickline is the only position coach where improvement has been shown this season.

The rest of the assistants need to go. The defence is no better a house cleaning would be good there also. Including head defensive coach Strong.

We'll have to just agree to disagree about Manvel.  Particularly since it's football team has a documented 17 D-1 prospects on it.  The math simply doesn't work out and coincidence doesn't enter into it.  Pearland HS was in the playoffs this year and last year and you can count on one hand the number of D-1 players it had combined.  Hell, you can do that for every year Pearland has been in the playoffs - including its state championship.

Manvel is so small it has to play it's games in the Alvin HS stadium, because it doesn't even have one.

I'm betting Shadow Creek won't make a dent in Manvel's quality of players.

What are the odds?

Don't count on it.

Flower Mound Marcus won a state title while playing it's home games at Max Goldsmith Stadium which sits on the campus of Lewisville High School. Flower Mound High, Flower Mound Marcus, Lewisville Hebron, Lewisville High and The Colony are all part of Lewisville ISD. A portion of Frisco, Grapevine, Coppell and Carrollton are also in the Lewisville ISD. It's one of the biggest districts around.

When Marcus played Lewisville, what did they do? LOL They played at Texas Stadium. LOL (battle of the ax)

Flower Mound is a city of 60K people. Only in the last several years did stadiums get built for FMHS and MHS.

Lewisville won state in '93 and '96 in class 5A (now 6A). When Lewisville Hebron was built, no more district titles for Lewisville High after that. Hebron has become a perennial power though.
