The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point and select edges off a whole brisket and return them to the smoker.

Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they a heavenly bites of smoky goodness? I suppose it depends on who you ask...

Rather than discard trimmings and fat, we choose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.

***DO NOT FORWARD***

The Playmaker’s son, Michael Irvin, Jr, is a 2016 wide receiver recruit attending Prestonwood Christian (Plano). He just turned 17 and is already 6’2” and 200. Although he, like his Dad, is a Hurricanes fan, when we caught up with him this week, the first three schools he mentioned were Texas, Texas Tech and Miami (in that order). After those three he listed Kansas State, Michigan, Georgia, FSU, Oklahoma State and OU. That second group seemed like a formality.

Irvin, Jr said that the Texas coaches were at one of his practices this Spring and that they continue to show interest.

The 2016 quarterback class is loaded with talent. With plenty of in-state names to keep track of, it sounds like an out-of-stater is also worth keeping an eye on.

4-star QB Dwayne Haskins (Potomac, MD) is the No. 5 rated pro-style quarterback in the country. Shawn Watson and Charlie Strong already extended a scholarship offer to Haskins and that vaulted Texas up to the top of his list (Ohio State & Maryland).

Haskins is making plans to visit Austin for a game this Fall.

*****

2015 wide receiver Quan Shorts from Humble, TX (Atascocita) is a sleeper prospect to keep an eye on. Although he camped at A&M in June, he is committed to UTSA. A source told HornSports that Shorts continues to get some interest from UT.

*****

A source that has been to every practice except one told us that DeMarco Cobbs is playing so well that he’s making the coaches, and the offense, take notice. Cobb reportedly looks more comfortable dropping into coverage than any of the guys running first team.

What we’re hearing is that Bedford loves the flexibility that Cobbs allows in the lineup. In a hybrid-type safety role, Cobbs potentially gives Bedford the option of keeping Diggs at CB in nickel formations.

As is often the case with true freshmen, ArmantI Foreman is a guy that’s been really hot and really cold. After we told you last week that Foreman was the last freshman wideout mentioned, one player could not stop raving about his recent performances.

“That dude can flat out ball. He’s already better than he was at the beginning of camp and I can’t say that about the rest (of the freshmen).”

*****

Desmond Harrison is currently playing first string right tackle. That’s an improvement from the beginning of camp.

What we’re told is that the staff would like two things from the big fella:

1. Post good grades in the second Summer session

2. Continue to improve on-field performance enough to move to LT

“Des is so capable. The way you’ll know if he’s reaching his potential is if you I tell you he’s switching sides (from RT to LT).”

*****

Speaking of Summer grades, Monday the 18th was the last day for final exams. Grades will post within the week. Buckle up, some of the guys are c-l-o-s-e.

*****

Erik Huhn is a 2nd year player that many were projecting to make a move up the depth chart. While it’s still possible, we’re hearing that Huhn isn’t playing fast enough right now. Whether that’s from not seeing the field for so long, or because he doesn’t trust injuries/rehab yet, we can’t say for certain.

*****

The news from one of the newest DB’s is better though – true freshman Jason Hall is playing well. In fact, Hall has played well enough that coaches are mixing him into lineups with some first teamers to see how he performs.

HornSports had a chance to catch up with a player in Dylan Haines’ position group. He had some good insight into what Haines is doing to grab all the attention:

“He (Haines) is such a smart player, man. It’s like he’s in Quandre’s (Diggs) head. Those two are always on the same page. I like it when he’s out there because I get to focus 100% on my job. I know he gonna be in the right place. I don’t even think about it.”

*****

We got an amusing text that we thought we’d share….as you’ve heard, Coach Strong and the staff took the guys bowling over the weekend. Afterward, we got this laugher, “Based on what I saw, it’s a good thing that some of these kids are good at football.”

*****

Someone that would know told us Greg Daniels would likely miss “at least 6 weeks”. His injury will have a ripple effect up and down the roster.

Thanks.  Nice to know that Haines is still doing well.  It will encourage more walk-ons to work to earn a spot if they have a chance.  I hope Dez makes it.

Hook 'em!

Great info.  I am REALLY interested in Irvins son.  To be as big as he is at 17 bodes well.  Hopefully he has his dads speed.

Doc I didn't think daddy Irvin was fast. He just would out muscle, out work, and catch everything thrown at him. He was also very good at the push off. Damn he was good. As a Cowboy fan I cried a little when he hurt his neck. Damn eagles.

Yeah Irvin said himself he knew he wasn't fast, so he told himself run this slant route and get your head knocked off, but hold onto the ball or you are going back to the ghetto. One of my favorite stories.

Great stuff, guys.

It was the work ethic that made Irvin so great. Of course he had talent, but his desire to be the best made him one of the greatest Cowboys of all time.

It also didn't hurt that he had Aikman throwing to him.

If Junior has half the want-to that Sr had, he'll do just fine.

It will be very interesting to see how Irvin Jr. progresses his Junior year. I'm not to familiar with the level of competition in the private school leagues in Texas. Since they are division 1 how much of a learning curve will he have to go through when he makes the jump to college?

I believe Irvin Jr. is All U. Texas might make a big push but I think the pull of daddy's alma mater will be too much.

I don't know. Irvin was pretty happy to leave Florida and come to Texas. I think he still lives in Texas today. I could be wrong though.

If Irving Jr. goes anywhere but Miami, I'll be completely shocked. I just don't see anything else happening with that recruitment.

All that info & everybody wants to talk Irvin, Jr.

NOTE TO SELF: Do a recruit profile on Playmaker's kid
