The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point and select edges off a whole brisket and return them to the smoker.
Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they a heavenly bites of smoky goodness? I suppose it depends on who you ask...
Rather than discard trimmings and fat, we chose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.
***DO NOT FORWARD***
Isaac Warren, a 2015 CB prospect from Tyler (John Tyler HS) is scheduled to visit for the UCLA game.
Warren has had a roller coaster recruitment, initially committing to SHSU back in May only to decommit two months later after getting offered by Arizona State and Purdue. Warren committed to Purdue soon after they offered and is still verbally a Boilermaker.
Even though he didn’t hold an offer from UT, Warren came for the Under the Lights camp and impressed while in Austin. Evidently his size and frame (6’0â€, 189 pounds) were enough to keep the Texas coaches in contact and even though they haven’t offered yet, Warren is listening closely.
Our source says that if the coaches become convinced that he’s a pure Big 12-caliber corner prospect (and not a safety), then an offer will come. It won’t happen this weekend though – there’s still too many quality DB prospects on the board.

We’re hearing that Greg Daniels is back at practice and moving well. He didn’t participate in team drills last week, but it might be something that gets tested this week. With the OL needing all the help it can get, a 2 TE set with Daniels helping block has to be an attractive option. Blocking on the line certainly puts stress on his knee, but the coaches could not have him run routes and eliminate that risk.
The original timeline for Daniels was 6 weeks. It’s been about 4 and depending on the severity of the damage found when they scoped his knee, 4 weeks wouldn’t be out of the question.
Daniels is a developing story that we’ll continue checking on.

Only about half as many recruits visited for the BYU game (compared to North Texas). It gets tougher for recruits to come for a game as they get deeper into their own seasons.
There were also a handful of current commitments on hand and one thing we heard is that Louis Brown (Burton) is becoming an excellent recruiter for the Horns. Brown has a magnetic personality and other recruits seem to be responding to him.

One highly rated recruit that did not make it in town is D’Eriq King, Manvel High’s undersized dual threat quarterback. The Horns are recruiting King as an athlete and according to a source, the coaches were “not alarmed†that King didn’t make the trip.

While we’re talking about BYU visitors, it’s noteworthy that the majority of recruits were 2016 kids. This staff needs a big time 2015 recruit to go all-in and start some momentum. From that perspective, the UCLA game is a big priority. There will be lots of eyes on AT&T Stadium this Saturday night, watching to see if the BYU result was a bump in the road or a sign of a bigger problem.
It’s not accurate to use one game as a gauge but know that recruits and the media (perception) will be focused on Strong’s team this weekend.

We were fortunate to connect with a player from the Mack Brown era and get his thoughts on the BYU game…
“I thought we were playing not to lose. After Swoopes showed he was comfortable, I wish we would have let him loose a little more.â€
“The team played solid defense but came out flat in the second half. BYU is too good to come out flat and that's when things got ugly.â€
“It was really painful to watch but they'll learn a lot from it. Plenty of people expected this team to be 1-1, and here they are at 1-1…so I'm ready for UCLA.â€
- One interesting note, the player constantly used “WE†when talking about the program. Not earth shattering, but nice to see a former player still feeling like a part of the program despite a new coaching regime.
More BYU reaction – this is from the same former D-1 player that we talked to about the North Texas game in last week’s Burnt Ends…
“It seemed like Texas may have been too concerned with calling plays to keep Swoopes comfortable instead of plays to win the game. I know a comfortable QB is invaluable but the running backs are the real strength of the offense. Gray and Brown needed the ball in more creative ways.â€

The last reaction to the BYU game comes from a recruit that holds a Texas offer…
“The offensive line’s inexperience showed but I thought Jake Raulerson played well.â€
We pressed him and asked if a result like 41-7 impacted his thoughts on the Texas program or the new coaching staff.
“No, not really. You can’t think that way.â€

One more blast – this is for the hoops heads out there…
Rick Barnes and the team will host Matt McQuaid on an official visit this weekend. McQuaid is a shooting guard out of Duncanville, TX (Duncanville HS) and is thought to be a top 10 player in the state.
McQuaid is a name you’ve heard us mention previously when we talked about Barnes’quest for a lights out SG to round out the roster. Playing on the Team Texas AAU squad, McQuaid committed to SMU, but decommitted shortly after the Mudiay drama.
After hosting Eric Davis last weekend and now McQuaid this weekend, Barnes and his staff should be nearing a decision. We’re told that they will go after the player they think best fits in the locker room and make one guy their primary focus (rather than scattershooting).
