Burnt Ends (5-18)

The way it was done and the disingenuous explanation.

I get it. Prices go up. But 31% in one year AND charging for parking AND telling what I can do with them if I can't use them? And then telling me the latter policy is to keep grandfathered ticket holders from reselling tickets for profit. To whom? Laughable.

I'd have respected him more if he had said 'screw you grandfathered holders. If I lose 4 of you I can make it up with one new one'. At least that would have been honest.

I think he's making a huge mistake not valuing long time season ticket holders and I suspect he underestimated the pushback.

Secondarily if I hear any more about 'branding' or recruiting benefits as a reason to move marquee games to Mexico I'm gonna puke. I'm a college football fan. I'm sure it makes sense in an MBA sort of way, but as a fan screw it. We're already number one in merch sales and if we have to use a foreign trip for recruiting that defines 'gadget program'.

I don't think he's a moron. But I don't think he has much of a feel for the Texas fanbase.

I don't get a good feeling withPatterson. I like his hires in Strong and Smart but I can't point to anything else as a positive. I'm a bit miffed at my perceived move toward his gimmicky "pro style" view of the game day experience. UT had a great tradition and I feel that should be the focus rather than making it up ala the Spurs or Cowboys or any other pro team. Screw the gimmicks, UT done right sells itself. Maybe I'm just an old curmudgeon ex. I do care more now that's daughter is there.

I don't know, playing a game in Dubai could be a positive perk for recruiting. An exciting trip for many kids who've never been anywhere. As for me though, I'd stay home and watch it on TV.
I don't know if it would help recruiting and I don't care. I understand that Patterson would want to please rich donors, many of whom are in the oil business. However, playing a game in Dubai is a joke.

Sorry, but any country that still has the death penalty for a homosexual act by itself should stop any talk of UT ever playing there. Although it would be interesting if we played a game there and they had kiss cam, it's illegal to kiss in public in Dubai. Sounds like Patterson doesn't care as long as there is a buck in it.

Just an fyi:

If I read the article correctly, the team will spend some extra time in Dubai and traveling.  They will gain academic credit through a university there, and why not, international travel is educational.  I would imagine there will be a study of language and culture, as well.  If someone doesn't agree that exposure to other cultures and international travel is an advantage, you seriously need to open your mind to new ideas.

I believe that the PAC-12 has an agreement in place with Dubai, and perhaps other countries as well.

Do you think the horse is dead yet?

the most common language in Dubai is English. Hopefully our boys pick up some common phrases.

Do you actually believe that SP did all this by himself?  Do you think it was done without the approval of the administration AND most bmd's.  As the AD the announcements, of course, must come from his office, but he is not all powerful.  Particularly as a new AD, he won't do all this on his own.  Surely, you understand this?

Do you have something against spreading the UT brand and giving Strong and Smart another recruiting tool?  Do you understand these games are not an either/or proposition?  Do you actually believe a home game is being sacrificed to play overseas?  Did you expect every OOC game to played at home?  Do you actually think a foreign trip is something we HAVE to do, instead of something in addition to what we already do?

On this I agree - but I don't think he cares.  And this is an obvious fault and what got him into trouble in Houston.
Would you prefer to see aggy take up the standard and become the international sweetheart of Texas?  Not to mention the SEC pushing for international games as well?

Do you think is cannot happen?

Guys, guys.  It is one basketball game - that I can live with.  I do not want to see a football game played out of the country - ever.  Basketball plays enough games that one will not hurt.  Early in the season, I know that several tournaments do not count toward the number of games played, in order to encourage participation and travel.  This probably falls into that category.

While at UT, I was lucky enough to be selected to travel out-of-the country and represent the University one time.  It was on UT's dime, and it was an experience that I remember to this day.  We were treated like royalty by our host country, and we were privileged to see and do things that even the most influential tourist doesn't -things one cannot buy.  It was the trip of a lifetime.

With that in mind, I'm happy for the team.  Please, carry on.  I'm out.

Hook 'em!
