Burnt Ends (10-6)

very informative piece. kudos to all involved.

a couple of thoughts on the patterson related info.

first...the mexico city game. as a fan, that does virtually nothing for me. and if it's at the expense of an attractive home game, it does less than nothing. i get it...branding, globalization, international marketing, thousands of little mexican kids wearing 'los longhorn' t-shirts. fine. mexico city is not a tourist destination and i won't spend thousands on airfare, tickets, hotel and transportation to choke on Mexican smog. i won't be going. not that anybody cares.

as for The Summit II. The summit was such a great sports arena it's now a church. if there's one thing UT hoops fans have shown it's there's zero chance of consistently filling a 16K size arena, assuming that's the plan for a multi-use 'Summit-type' facility. again, i get it. concerts, circuses etc....lot of money out there and partnering with the city/county for this type of venue is probably good for business. but as a fan...meh. again, not that anybody cares.

patterson is doing his job. but it's pretty obvious now more than ever, that the job of a modern AD has little to do with the concerns of the average fan and can often be at cross purposes to the wishes of the average fan. that's not new, but these two items sum it all up pretty clearly.

anyway, that's sports business in 2014. it is what it is i suppose.
Completely agree about the Mexico game...

Tonight, Shawn Watson said, "got to have some trick plays in your hip pocket".

Source to HornSports (above), "coaches might consider some trick/gadget plays, especially in the Red Zone".

Hmmmmm......
Did Watson also say tonight that Swoopes was scared to get hit? And that he basically went to crap after getting hit once in the Baylor game? Read that on OB and wondered if you got the same?

That's out of context.

Both Watson & Swoopes talked about the fact that Ty was nervous in the Baylor game. Swoopes (yesterday) admitted that he let a couple of early hits rattle him.

Here are direct quotes of what Swoopes said:

" I was a little bit nervous. I got hit a little bit, and it made me a little bit nervous. We went back and watched it, and [Coach Watson] just basically told me that it's part of the job description. Sometimes you're going to get hit and you still have to stand there and make a throw and do what you have to do to make the team successful. So after watching it, I think I say the same thing I said the other day. I'll be fine."

"It's just a lot of little things, just my reactions to some things that were happening. I wish I would have reacted a little bit different, and I just think, like I said just a second ago, with more game situation, experience, I'll get better at doing those kinds of things."

Thanks for giving the full view... Im hoping that he can handle/understand/accept the physical nature of the QB position better in the very near future... Let's say, by Saturday.

I expressed this on another site.  For as long as I can remember, the #1 duty of an AD is to tailor athletic programs to make money - the football program in particular.  This isn't Patterson's first rodeo and, if he wasn't overtly instructed, he certainly  understood the lay of the land regarding his job responsibilities - making money.  After all, look who he is following.

The fan is a concern, but only in the sense of how the university can make a profit off of him.. They could give less of a crap about what the fan wants otherwise.

The purpose of out of country games is to generate MONEY.  UT is already the #1 money generator in America and Patterson intends for it to be #1 in the world.

Why do you think Notre Dame played in Ireland - for the good of the fans?  That's a laugh.

That is the problem with these message boards.  The membership is under the delusion that college games are played for their benefit.  Far from it.  They are played for receipts, advertising and products.  Why do you think Oregon was given those outlandish uniforms?  For the fans or the players?  Hell, no - they wear them so the manufacturer can make money selling those products.  The profits from their product sales far outweigh the cost of the uni's.  Nike has understood this for years.

It ain't rocket science, friends.

Try to remember, it is ALWAYS about the money.
