Burnt Ends - 10/31/16

How in the world do you think we cant outscore Tech?! I mean we're gonna play Swoopes more at RB based on his incredible success last week so... Gonna score in bunches.

I seriously doubt UT can outscore Tech. No way in hell would I have him back next season as we'll be going through this stuff from now on. I was all for Strong when he was hired and I told myself I'd give him 3 seasons before making up my mind. I have seen enough and it ain't good.

If he finds a way to win 9 games I am all for keeping him... I think he has made some super terrible decisions and is allowing Gilbert to make some horrible decisions as well but if he wins 9, let em stay.

Disclaimer: I don't think this will happen

If charlie wins out and wins the bowl can you fire him at 9-4?

If we shed him at with 8 or 9 wins I think it would do far more damage than good... I think it would potentially lead to an exodus as well as completely wreck recruiting...

While I kinda like Herman... There are no GREAT options at the moment. I think that Herman is a Lateral hire rather than us hiring up. IMHO Herman is not "proven." There is still a lot to be seen about him.

So while I am not a Strong advocate as I once was... I don't think we should unhinge everything for anything less than somebody proven.

To me, you have made progress if you have a winning record against teams with at least a .500 record and if you have dominated most, if not all, of the teams with a losing record.

And I talking about opponent's record against teams with a pulse. Not like some of the teams like Baylor or KSU have played.

Prior to the season I was in the same boat as a lot of other people who thought 7-5 or 8-4 was about the best that could be expected this year. And that was based on what we thought we knew about the quality of the teams we would be playing.

Well, based on what we have seen from our opponents, 7-5 will mean we fell short and 8-4 is really no improvement. It would have taken 9-3 for me to consider that this team had made progress.

So any word on why Vahe didn't play except for FGs/extra points? What about Heard? Don't recall seeing him on the field either? They hurt?

Whats the difference between Texas this year and last year?  Yea that's right, we can actually score points with Gilbert.  I guess we can all pretend that is because of Charlie Strong because our defense has been 100+ rankings the last 2 years under him.

So an overall record such as 8-4 and completely ignoring the fact this team loses games it should win atleast twice a year and has coaches that do not know what a game clock is.  Or maybe its because he likes to call timeouts for the other team before the half.  SMH

Strong has set more bad records than any other coach in the history of our program.  After last win versus Baylor he is now what 1-16 when trailing in at the start of the 4th Quarter and somehow this is "OK" with some of you.  We are still talking youth and whatever other bs excuse you can come up with to validate his 15-18 record after 3 years.

Im done with Charlie Strong.  Texas deserves better.  And you all should expect more.

One more point that seems to lost in the talk of 8-4 record.  How are we playing in those games?  So far atleast there is no blowout loss to Iowa State so far this year.  We beat an overrated ND and Baylor team at home.  Lose to Cal and KS which we should have won.  Fumbled snaps at goaline.  Muffed plays by ST.  Charlies teams are undisciplined or unlucky you pick either way its bad.

Im not even going to say the proverbial "I like the guy just not as our coach"  I just want a real head coach that understand basics of clock management and timeouts.

I agree with utb04073.... if we end this season at 8-4, there is a completely different mood around here.  It would mean we went on a rather impressive run at the end of the season and actually won a few decent road games.  At that point, his job isn't really even in question.

I said at the beginning of the season (with zero inside information) that 8 wins brings CS back; 7 wins is pick'm and below 7 means Texas is looking for another coach.  I actually think a more intriguing question is what happens if CS somehow gets to 7 wins?  And a good follow up might be, with the complete inconsistency we have seen.... how in the world can we even expect to hit 7?

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think the actual decision will be based on things like: game management, future prospects and the direction of the program; but will be based on appearances and PR.

I doubt they make it to 7 wins. I want them to win them all however i doubt it will happen.

Too many times we win a big game only to lose to a game we should of won the following week.

As doc Holliday says "ill make you famous" techs offense is going to play lights out even if its with their backup qb.

Our defense still sucks

It will be interesting to see how we play with our ears pinned back the whole game. Maybe we can get a lot pressure and make some things happen. I hope so anyway. 🤘

To further elaborate on my above post, last year we finished 5-7 but it is not far-fetched at all to see that we could have finished 7-5.

This years team is better overall than last years team and has played, arguably, an easier schedule than last year's team.

That being the case, if we finish 8-4, than this season is pretty much a push compared to last year. Finishing 9-3 would be progress while 7-5 will be regression.

At the start of the year, I would have said 9-3 is a stretch. However, after seeing how much we have improved on offense and seeing the real quality of our opponents, 9-3 is where this team should have finished.

I read that the decision to bench Vahe was more about how well McMillion is performing.  Vahe pass protection needs work.  I just hope Vahe doesn't get discouraged.

I can think of worse things than 8-4 or 9-3 and keeping CS.  I know we had high expectations this season which were jacked up higher with the ND win...but 8-3 says maybe...maybe...the glory days are still a year away.  As fans we want results now and I am certainly one of those fans.  We have waited a long time.

Could we go 8-3 or better this season?  Maybe

Has CS shown some doofus moves in the last 3 years? Sure, but we are better on offense and he has made an effort to address issues.

Has CS shown that he will run a program with class and integrity? YES, and that is important to me.

Is a coaching change a sure-fire way to guarantee better results? NO

I'm not making a case to keep CS, I am just saying that maybe a little more patience wouldn't be the worst thing.  I know there are those who are on this board who are "done with him", but there could be worse things than keeping CS for one more year.  Besides, I think giving a new coach 4 years is reasonable so he can get a team that are all recruited by him and his staff.

What if we weather this storm and come out on the other side with a respected coach, awesome talent, and a program that can sustain success for a long period of time?  If not, we suffer one year, save $5M on the buyout and go to the coaching search again...

I'm just saying, keeping him another year might not be the worst thing.  And yes, I might be crazy for posting this and I do feel a little light headed and dizzy...but HOOK 'EM.

You answered your own question "We have waited a long time".

This crap about strong needing a 4th year to have a chance is the same crap we heard last year about being given a 3rd year.

We give the guy a 4th year and its the exact same and everyone will say give me another year for last years class to mature.

I do not want things to stay even, we are awful especially considering we are the flagship program in the state.

Christ some of you have mistaken us for the university of Tennessee. You want to root for the color orange then move up north

Great points made by all on this matter.I am not pleased with where this program is at this point of the season. I expected much more progress from the staff and players I am equally holding them accountable for production on the field. The only argument I can make to keep CS one more year is the fact that this program has zero senior leadership. Who on this yrs team stands out as a senior leader? That is a big reason for inconsistent execution, motivation and discipline. Which is what has the horns at 4-4. Past years under MB had great senior leadership guys in key spots QB,OL,DL,DB,RB CS isnt to that point yet. I believe that will happen with or without him. So it wont be just with a new regime its whats here now. Just need to allow it to start showing and collect dividends.JMO

The University of Texas waited 35 years for natty in football. A little patience could be in order. I think what Zorro is saying isn't far fetched IF the team gets to 8 wins, which would show progress at the end of year and build momentum as CS tries to close on his recruits. Like he said, I could see worse scenarios, specially in light that there is no "savior"out there waiting to sign on to coach the team. There are a lot of ifs involved, but why would giving him a 4th year be a bad thing if he closes strong and gets to 8-4?

I'm looking for a HC that can manage a clock, manage a game, and one that can hold opponents to under 600 yards every once in a while. Right now I'm not looking for a natl champ. One that can get the Horns into the top half of the B12 would be an improvement.

Hard to argue with that, my friend. Though I'd venture If we go 8-4 or better CS will have satisfied some of that.

I read Harsin and threw up in my mouth. . . . .not a good pick IMHO.

Still some holding out hope for Saban?   Well, we still have a flat earth society too.

Good lord how do people make so much money yet can be so clueless??????

Life is just not flacking fair.
