Briles

I don't know Art Briles. I do know he is well liked by the high school coaches in Texas. I've yet to see any of his teams, be it UH, Baylor, play hard nosed defense. Love the offenses. He has a bit of an edge I like. But he isn't a youngster either. I still have a bit of a beef with Art though.

I still want to know why he voted us way below OU and Tech and a few others in '09 during the 3 way tie and coaches votes impacted the BCS standings. He had a beef and threw logic and ethics out the window for some reason. Does anyone on here know what the deal was? I've asked around. Nobody I know can explain.

Patterson is paid to be the Athletic Director and hire the best possible coaches for the job.
He wasn't hired to hold bitter grudges ala middle school. It was 5 years ago. Jesus.
I don't care in the least about Patterson. The issue was Briles having long held contempt for UT but supposedly instantly tossing it aside to coach at Texas. I guess you missed that nuance.

FYI -Not everyone who coaches football is a whore. Patterson may believe Briles is one and that such a personality fits well with our program. I beg to differ.

There is a lot of smoke for Briles on twitter the past few days... I don't know what that means though??

Briles is in the top 3, per my guy.
Saban is 1, knocking out details with him now. Mack issue could be a factor, or may not be. The details left to be worked out are with regard to keeping Mack away from Saban and how we can provide assurance, real assurance.

Fisher is 2 - guy really wants this job and is excited to be talking with us. He's the first call we make if somehow Mack is able to scare Saban away again.

Briles is 3 - initial contact to gauge interest, serious talks not to happen unless somehow 1 and 2 don't happen.

It is going to be quiet for several days on this front. What you hear may simply be misinformation, etc., to keep attention diverted away. So if Saban hasn't been announced by the end of next week, you know that Fisher is going to be the guy and Mack's interference was serious enough to stop the Saban deal.
I surmise Fisher likes the pay better than the job. ;)

I don't quite understand the love for Fisher and Briles - neither have established a solid record yet. While I wouldn't object to their appointment if no better alternatives are available, I don't see them as sure winners like most of the fans here do.

The Beingreal guy on twitter is saying that the initial offer will be made to Briles.
I still don't buy it.

Briles has a good thing going in Waco. Do I think he'd do great at UT? Absolutely, but the pressure is 10x more intense than what he experiences in Waco. Their people are happy with 8-4 every year.

Maybe he'll do it. I imagine it will take an offer in the 6-$7M range.

Slow down a minute, please.

In whose world is a list of candidates released?, revealed?, whatever...in order, at ANY time during the process?

C'mon! Ya'll aren't taking this seriously are you?

Sheesh!

I have a question about Saban concerned being concerned about Mack being around. 1. Did Saban have this same concern before when he was coming? Or did he recently have this fear? Another words before the FB Mack was supposed to step down etc and Saban was supposed to be announced, Saban had to know Mack would be around in some capacity. So if Saban had no worried before what changed? I guess I am just confused on this and the timelines before and now when this became a concern for Saban.

Thanks Mark

Saban's concerns re Mack pre-Black Friday were about optics and he didn't want to be viewed as the one who pushed Mack out. So that's why Mack's "role" was to retire that Friday. Then all hell broke loose. Saban lost faith in what we were doing.

Today, Saban's concerns are heightened as he's seen a picture of how Mack can be and doesn't want any part of it. He wants his own show and wants assurances he won't be undermined by the previous coach.

How does he get these assurances? Thanks

That would require me to get into the mind of Patterson. I just know that Patterson is working to make those accommodations happen. But I can't answer more specifically, I don't know.

Thanks, was just curious

If I where Saban I would come in and tell Mack to STFU and go have a snuggle struggle with Joe and leave the coaching to the guy with the accolades.

I think Briles would be a great hire. He has an innovative offense, has strong connections with Texas high school football and has produced every place he has been. A Texas guy who can scheme, recruit and get players to run through walls for him is a good starting place if I am Steve Patterson.

Has he REALLY produced everywhere he has been? He has 2 CC. He's a Mack Brown Starter kit at this point.

I'm no fan of Briles, but I disagree with this point. Briles has two CCs at Houston and Baylor in 11 years. Mack Brown had two CCs in 30 years of coaching, 16 of those at Texas. I don't believe you can compare the two.

I like Briles but this is not the splash hire many expected.
He would probably do very well at Texas.

We don't know what it is like to have a real x's and o's coach on the 40.

Briles wouldn't be my first choice but I think he would be geometrically better than Mack.

Its not like he took over Houston when they were good. Both Baylor and Houston were garbage when he took over. Baylor won the gd conference this year and is in the fiesta bowl. He has produced with 3 different QBs at Baylor. Hell look how many pro QBs he has produced/recruited. Kolb, Keenum, RG3 and Petty will be a pro. Hell Florence had a hell of a year and no one wanted him.

Trying to imagine enjoying watching longhorn network with Briles on it... Not really seeing it. Wins would overcome that of course but Im in the camp of cake and eat it too before we go for one or the other.

Briles would be an excellent hire and nationally it would be called a great move but I would take saban and fisher first
