Briles

In some ways Briles has done more with less than virtually anyone...so I don't see him as a negative, but he is not the "sure thing" of other coaches.

At this point I'm Saban, Fisher, Briles in that order. That being said, I'll be very happy with any of the three.

My nephew son in law was a grad assistant under Briles and he said Briles would not take the job. Guess we will see who is right.

The Beingreal guy on twitter is saying that the initial offer will be made to Briles.
I hope it's going to be for less than $750,000 a year. Briles has not established a clear record yet. His loss to Oklahoma State was worse than Texas'

I just don't see Briles being the type to leave something unfinished. Mind you, my opinion is based off of only what I have heard about the guy.

Briles is in the top 3, per my guy.

Saban is 1, knocking out details with him now. Mack issue could be a factor, or may not be. The details left to be worked out are with regard to keeping Mack away from Saban and how we can provide assurance, real assurance.

Fisher is 2 - guy really wants this job and is excited to be talking with us. He's the first call we make if somehow Mack is able to scare Saban away again.

Briles is 3 - initial contact to gauge interest, serious talks not to happen unless somehow 1 and 2 don't happen.

It is going to be quiet for several days on this front. What you hear may simply be misinformation, etc., to keep attention diverted away. So if Saban hasn't been announced by the end of next week, you know that Fisher is going to be the guy and Mack's interference was serious enough to stop the Saban deal.

1 or 2 would make my day.

I like Briles but this is not the splash hire many expected.
If he were hired I think it would be universally lauded by the press. He is highly thought of by most outside of Aggie and Longhorn boards.

Art Briles is the choice of all the "talking heads" on ESPN and other networks. If we ended up with him, it would be a hire that would be nationally liked. But then again, so would Saban and Fisher.

I'm not an Art Briles guy. I've been vocal about how I don't think he's a good fit on another board. But at the same time, if for some reason we miss out on Saban and Fisher and NFL guys, I think Briles is the best of the rest. He's won at Houston and turned that program around. He is winning at Baylor and turned that program around. His teams are extremely well coached on the offensive side of the ball and they churn out NFL players using leftovers. His defensive teams are not very strong, but they are better. Being able to recruit at a school like Texas I think would alleviate that side of the ball.

I would not be opposed to Briles. But before looking at him, we need to exhaust other options. If we were to go out and hire Briles tomorrow without giving other guys a look I'd be unhappy. If we hired Briles on January 12th after talking with Saban, Fisher, Malzahn, Harbaugh's, etc then I would be ok with it.

Its interesting the people forget how he ranked Texas 5th in the coaches poll in 2008 to help block us from the MNC game. I guess Patterson thinks if he throws enought money at someone who has shown a willingness to put his hatred for Texas above his principles he can convert that person into someone who loves Texas. Nice find there, Steve! Maybe we can also hire a basketball and baseball coach who hate Texas but are just coaching here because of the money.

Patterson is paid to be the Athletic Director and hire the best possible coaches for the job.

He wasn't hired to hold bitter grudges ala middle school. It was 5 years ago. Jesus.

The information of smoke. This search for a coach is just about as mixed up as my neighbor is or we are the ones making the search mixed up with smoke signals as in San Antonio Indians (no hair on their chest) you know as in smoke signals, OK.

I really wanted Jon Gruden personally, but NS, Fisher, Malzahn, either Harbaugh brother, and Briles we work for me. Anything other will disappoint me unless it is Gruden.

Extremely well stated. You nailed it.
