Waco, Texas - Baylor University head football coach Art
Briles released this statement this morning concerning media speculation
surrounding his interest in other college or professional coaching opportunities
following the Bears' most successful season in school history:
"I have no desire to pursue other coaching positions," Baylor coach Art
Briles said. "As I've said many times, I am both humbled and honored to be
the head coach at Baylor University, and believe we have something special going
here. I look forward to leading the Bears onto the field next fall at McLane
Stadium and defending our Big 12 championship that our players and coaches
worked so hard to win this season.
"There is tremendous excitement for our program's future, and I look forward
to many more great seasons at Baylor," he added. "There is tremendous commitment
from our University leadership, athletic administration, coaches and
student-athletes - it truly is a great time to be a Baylor Bear."
Briles' restoration of Baylor's football program to an elite national level
received an exclamation point in 2013 with a Big 12 Conference title, first-ever
BCS bowl berth and a school-record 11 wins. Baylor spent eight consecutive weeks
ranked in the top 10, and its powerhouse offense shattered the NCAA record for
points scored (681, 29 more than previous record). BU also set all-time
attendance marks (45,948 average, 51,728 single-game) in its final season at
Floyd Casey Stadium in 2013.
His successes earned Briles 2013 coach of the year honors from the league
coaches (Chuck Neinas award) as well as the AP and Sporting News. He earned
finalist honors from the Eddie Robinson, Paul "Bear" Bryant, Bobby Bowden and
Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year awards as well as being named the 2013 AFCA
Region 4 Coach of the Year for the second time in three years. Briles ranks as
the third-winningest coach in Baylor history (44-32 in six seasons) and owns an
11-year collegiate record of 78-60.
