Big 12 Media Days

So Bob Bowlsby just finished and it went... poorly.

I'd say 90% of the questions he was asked pertained to Baylor. Bowlsby contradicted himself on multiple occasions and even went as far to say that the rape cases were due to "alcohol, drugs, and raging hormones."

He began with stating that Big 12 has no legal stance on enforcing Baylor to give information.  He then went on to say "I've met with Baylor leadership and they have indicated they don't have a written report," and that he knew as much as the general public. He then turned around to say that he knew more than most others.

"Baylor has been forthcoming." "That's not quite what I said." "We know more than the public." "We don't know more than you know."

He was also asked a pretty pointed question about the Baylor situation where he was asked how he felt "as a man with daughters" that Baylor retained Kendal Briles and the others on the staff. He tip-toed around that one saying from all the questions that he feels for the athletes and coaches who have been thrown under the bus by this scandal.

All in all, I believe Bowlsby knows very little about what actually happened at Baylor. And what he does know more about is how Baylor will deal this. Bowlsby later on said Tuesday's Baylor presentation will probably lead to more information uncovered: "I think our CEOs will ask different questions than I posed. I expect to learn more tomorrow."

When asked how other Big 12 presidents feel about the Baylor situation, Bowlsby said other Big 12 school presidents feel "sullied" by Baylor sexual assault case.

Before the questioning section of the press conference, in Bowlsby address to the press, he talked about new legislation in the Big 12 concerning taking closer looks at incoming freshmen and transfer before they are allowed on campus. I believe this comes as a direct result of the Baylor situation despite what he might say.

On the top of Baylor Bowlsby reiterated the new rule which restricts teams to only play one FCS team and requires one P5 match up in OOC. "Some of [the out of conference schedules] weren't as strong as they needed to be." @Baylor.

Beyond the Baylor situation Bowlsby touched on a multitude of topics. Namely the new championship game and divisional composition. Bowlsby expects divisions and site for the 2017 Big 12 title game to be set by November. He hinted at equity based division composition influenced by end of season performance rankings. Bowlsby said the main determining factor will be trying to avoid late season rematches. He pointed to the OSU and OU rematch that would've happened this year had the championship game been in place this year.

On the championship game he said the logistics of the game are still up in the air, "A recommendation will be put together and sent to ADs. We still have to iron things out with the networks." Bowlsby said he has asked for a time slot between 11am-7pm.

"Nobody in this league is going to win the championship by who they don't play"

Bowlsby also touched on Big 12 expansion (now known as conference composition) and dropped a small bombshell in saying tomorrow the Big 12 will discuss expansion again despite what David Boren had said early this month. However, he included the caveat that the last meeting was the most frank meeting he's even been in during his time as the Big 12 commish. He doesn't expect any changes to come tomorrow.

Besides the obvious topics, Bowlsby also made a couple of other interesting comments:

  • they will be adding more multi-capture cameras to stadiums to enhance replays. "We will have cameras that the networks won't have."
  • "Recruiting rules are badly in need of modernization"

Bowlsby should get a fake Twitter account after that debacle. Similar to the Fake Dan Beebe.

Some big quotes I missed

"We also put in place a champ game as I mentioned, that's been a long process, and I will talk more about that later. I think we've gone through an extensive period of research with our Board, a lot of data analysis over the last 18 months on conference composition.

Those discussions are ongoing, and as you know we have a board meeting tomorrow and conference composition and some of the decisions that we have before us will be on that agenda. All I can say is that in my four years plus in the conference, I don't know that we've every had a meeting of the Board that was more frank and forthright and transparent than the last one

we had, the one that was in early June. I think that sentiment and tenor will continue tomorrow. Our CEOs are working very well together and I really expect that this will be a positive process for us. I think the other thing that obviously we have on our plate is that our Board has asked for a full accounting from Baylor University relative to the sexual assaults and their university's response to that situation. I think it's fair to say that they're deeply concerned about the associational elements of this. There are certainly -- our conference and our Board doesn't have any legal
standing on some of the things that have taken place or are alleged to have taken place. But let it suffice to say as it pertains to all of our institutions, we are very committed as a group of ten schools to eradicating sexual assault on our campuses. It almost goes without saying that when you combine alcohol and drugs and raging hormones and the experiences of 18-22 years old, it's probably unrealistic to think that these
kinds of things are never going to happen."

"Baylor has been very forthcoming and I don't have any doubt that they will continue to be forthcoming."

"Q. Bob, you said Baylor has been forthcoming with all the information that you've requested." COMMISSIONER BOWLSBY: "That's not quite what I

said, Jake."
"The recruiting rules are bad until need of modernization and that includes the summer environment which as an
aside we went through one year of a relatively new summer environment and it's an impossibility to manage the summer environment and it's current form and we have a lot of work to do there."

Bowlsby on  Kendal Briles, Phil Bennett and Jeff Lebby:

I've asked questions about remaining members. I've asked questions about cultural aspects of the staff and the football team. I have empathy for some of the young men on the football team and some of the people that are very close to the staff, because it would be easy to paint this with a complete broad brush and have everybody presume to be implicated

So, you know, I don't have any inside information that would allow me to differentiate among staff members
or among team members, but I have asked that question and I have also asked the question about how
do we ensure that we're not going to have other incidents, because we have had some incidents in the
past. There was an academic scandal in the late 90s and then there was the basketball situation shortly after
the -- well, 2004 or 2005.

bowlsby better say that.  that's straight from boren.  this conference supports bad behavior, end of story.

fornicate (thank you, editor) mack and deloss for tying this conference around our necks.  we need to break that, whatever the cost.

Well, I don't think the Baylor coverup was perpetuated by 18 and 19 year olds. It may have been alcohol or drug induced...just saying. Bowlsby obviously wasn't hired for his ability to respond to questions in a pc, or negotiate conference affiliations. Why was he hired, again?

I agree street. Re my comment, do you think the coverup was alcohol or drug induced? What idiots! The only time any sane person would think trying to cover something like that up would be in a drunken stupor!

Per Chip Brown:

"I said to Kingsbury that he couldn't keep top QBs on campus and that Texas had struggled to get top quarterbacks to campus.

"Well, they got one now," Kingsbury said. "We were the first to offer Shane (Buechele). I just loved his quick release and decision-making and competitive makeup."

When asked if he worried about Buechele's size, he said:

"I coached Johnny (Manziel) and Case (Keenum), and Shane has plenty of size.""

-I think This is the most promising/encouraging/exciting Shane related quote to date! Love it, pumps me up!

Can you give us an example of a good question and an example of a bad question?

Some of us might not know the difference  ;)
